As a trustee, you will be collectively responsible for setting the charity’s strategy in line with its vision and for ensuring proper governance. We are proud that a majority of our board have lived experience as an unpaid carer. Whilst not essential, any experience you may have currently or in the past, will strengthen the representation of carers on the board. What’s involved?
There are governor vacancies across England and Wales. Some schools are also looking for remote governors who don't need to live near the school they support.
Governors volunteer at board level to set the strategic vision for their school. This involves constructively challenging current processes, using your unique skills to support senior leaders, and overseeing school finances. You’ll be involved in areas such as monitoring, budget management, and data analysis. As well as putting your expertise to good use, you’ll have the opportunity to develop your professional skills. Ultimately, you’ll work towards facilitating the delivery of a broad and exciting curriculum and oversee wellbeing and inclusion initiatives. Governors work collaboratively with the headteacher and other members of the board, including parents and school staff. In most schools, full board meetings are held termly, as are committee meetings. Many governors will sit on a committee linked to their expertise or interests, such as teaching and learning or finance and resources. In addition to attending meetings, governors will need to read the papers in advance, complete training courses, and occasionally visit their school.
Governors usually support schools for a period of four years and with an estimated time commitment of 7 hours per month. During these hours, you will attend meetings, read papers, attend training sessions, and make occasional visits to school.
Who can be a governor?
The most important part of being a governor is the ability to ask questions, provide support and have the best interests of the school at heart. You don't have to be a parent or have experience in education to become a governor. Schools seek a wide range of skills to support the board, including finance, HR, and data analysis.
Boards also need governors with a diversity of backgrounds and lived experiences to ensure a range of perspectives are considered during board meetings.
Schools welcome professional experience, as well as community insight and experience of working collaboratively.
You need to be aged 18 or above and there are certain criminal convictions that would exclude you from the role. A Disclosure and Barring Service check will be carried out by the school.

Learn to Love to Read offers one-to-one support to children who find learning to read challenging, in schools and online via Zoom.Our In-school volunteers are asked to commit 90 minutes, one afternoon a week, usually between 1-3 pm.
Our virtual volunteers are asked to commit 30-60 minutes, one afternoon a week, usually between 4-6 pm.
Full training and ongoing support is provided for all volunteers to provide them with a framework which supports children's reading skills, while also building their self-esteem, confidence and love of reading. Our volunteers support the same children each week, providing 20 minutes of one-to-one support for the whole academic year. This ensures a consistent and rewarding experience for both the volunteer and the children.
In Wandsworth, post-COVID, 20% of Key Stage 1 and 25% of Key Stage 2 children did not reach the expected standard of reading in summer 2025. Low literacy is linked to poverty and social exclusion, limiting options in life. Early literacy intervention is crucial to break this cycle. School closures due to COVID-19 have been tough for children from disadvantaged families.
Please note we only work with schools in the London borough of Wandsworth and all our volunteers need to live in or within easy reach of that borough.
In line with Safer Recruitment, all applicants are asked to complete an application form, provide references, take part in a face-to-face interview and ID check, and attend online training which includes safeguarding. All volunteers must have an enhanced DBS check which we arrange on your behalf. The Cathedral Safeguarding Committee acts as ‘critical friend’ and provides constructive challenge to the Chapter of Worcester Cathedral regarding the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults. Its role is to support Chapter in meeting their safeguarding obligations for the Cathedral and its activities, including safer recruitment, and to provide assurance to Chapter that the Cathedral’s safeguarding arrangements are fit for purpose.

Responsibilities
- to provide independent perspectives on safeguarding policy and practice at Worcester Cathedral.

Commitment
Meetings: The Safeguarding Committee meets formally 4 times per year (usually during the daytime, although times may vary). The duration of meetings is a maximum of two hours.
Papers are received in advance and all members of the Safeguarding Committee are expected to have read the papers and be prepared to contribute as needed to discussion.
Expenses can be claimed for attendance at meetings or carrying out functions on behalf of the Committee.

Waweza Social Enterprise links coastal women producers to fair markets and reinvests profits into the next generation of agri-preneurs to build a resilient, food-secure future.
In coastal Kenya, youth make up over 75% of the population, yet fewer than 10% are engaged in agribusiness due to systemic barriers like lack of training and resources. At the same time, recurring droughts and limited market access have left 85% of local women living below the poverty line. These women, who are the backbone of food production, face immense challenges in scaling their micro-businesses and protecting their families from environmental shocks.
Waweza addresses this through the Youth and Women Economic Lab (YOUWEL) project. We bridge the gap by purchasing products—such as goats and hand-woven baskets—directly from women at fair prices and reselling them in high-demand urban centers. Instead of extracting profits, we reinvest them into mentorship, coaching, and climate-smart agribusiness training for local youth. This integrated approach creates a self-sustaining cycle where women gain economic independence, youth build viable careers in agriculture, and communities develop the long-term resilience needed to overcome poverty.

The Refuge Admin Support Worker Volunteer supports the daily running of our Bexley Refuges by helping women and families access activities, appointments, and resources.

Face Painter Volunteer
About The Role
As a face painter you will be out and about in the grounds, engaging with visitors to create memories and helping them and you to have a great day out!
We believe that the best way for people to understand and connect to wetlands is to experience them, so we awe-inspiring nature up close at Martin Mere Wetland Centre, visitors can explore unique wetland habitats and the amazing array of birds and mammals that inhabit them. Our volunteers help to welcome and inspire visitors.
Volunteers are an essential part of the WWT team. You’ll get a warm welcome, including information on training, equipment and anything else you need.

Purpose/Summary of Role
The Treasurer is a trustee responsible for overseeing the financial affairs of the organisation, ensuring that finances are managed in line with legal requirements, good practice, and the organisation’s charitable aims.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership
- Ensure the organisation’s financial resources are managed responsibly and sustainably.
- Lead on financial strategy, planning, and risk management.
- Oversee the development of annual budgets and financial forecasts.
Financial Monitoring and Reporting
- Present clear, accurate financial reports to the Board.
- Monitor financial performance and alert the Board to any risks or variances.
- Ensure proper accounting records are kept in line with legal requirements.
Compliance and Governance
- Ensure the organisation complies with financial regulations, charity law, Companies House regulations (if applicable), and funder requirements.
