Job description

Khulisa works to break the cycle of exclusion and crime by intervening at every stage of the criminal justice system. It nurtures those who have been socially excluded and equip people with the skills and strength to choose alternatives to violence and crime.

To truly help people escape the cycle of social exclusion and crime, we believe that schools, prisons, communities and government need a more joined-up approach. This is why we are Britain’s only charity delivering behaviour change programmes, training for professionals and sharing best practice at key stages of the criminal justice system. This gives us an unrivalled breadth of expertise in and evidence of what works to reduce crime.

To break the cycle of social exclusion and crime, Khulisa works with at-risk youth, prisoners and ex-offenders to understand and tackle the root-cause of their violent and anti-social behaviours. We do this by placing wellbeing at the heart of rehabilitation, providing intensive therapeutic support and mentoring, which builds self-awareness and emotional resilience. By equipping people with the tools to choose alternatives to violence and crime, we provide a way out and a chance to feel safe and well. In doing so, we transform their lives and enable them and their communities to truly thrive and flourish.

We are looking for new Chair of Trustees to support us in reaching our ambitious goals over the next three years (from 2021). We have an excellent and high-performing staff team and a well established and vibrant Board that is keen to step up and meet the new challenges that lie ahead.

The Chair of Khulisa will hold the Board and Senior Management Team to account for the charity’s mission and vision. They will provide inclusive leadership to the Board of Trustees and ensure that each Trustee fulfils their duties and responsibilities for the effective governance of the charity.

The Chair will also support and challenge the Chief Executive and ensure that the Board operates well as a team and works closely with the entire Senior Management Team to achieve agreed objectives. They will act as an ambassador and the public face of the charity alongside the Chief Executive.

We are well placed to scale our services to meet the surging demand across the country, and we look forward to welcoming you to help us meet our goals.

Formal application is by way of a CV and a Supporting Statement

The format of the interviews will be determined by the COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions that apply at the time.

Previous convictions

There is a small range of offences – mainly fraud, sexual offences and terrorism-related offences – which can currently disqualify some people with unspent convictions from serving as a charity Trustee. Even in these cases, individuals can apply for a 'waiver' and this is often granted. If this is a matter of concern for you, please raise it – completely privately – with Cara during an informal chat and we'll offer advice.
