Alliance for African Women Initiative (AFAWI) welcomes volunteer interns from around the world. As a grassroots organization we foster a knowledge sharing environment that promotes an experience to learn about international development, Ghanaian culture and our projects that empowers women and children to create a better future for communities. AFAWI is not a placement agency, all the projects are owned and operated by our staff. Our organization was built to serve Ghanaian communities with a focus on women and children.

AFAWI has a number of ongoing projects for Volunteer Interns to choose from. These projects are located in rural communities no tour companies have access to.

Our projects have a set schedule and at different times of year some projects may be more of a priority.  Volunteer Interns personal preference will be accommodated as much as possible, though depending on the time and length of your stay,  the implementation activities and the level of results witnessed may vary. There is opportunity to learn about and contribute to multiple projects.

As an Administration Volunteer, you will support the Fundraising Team with vital administration tasks.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to work closely with the North London Rape Crisis Counselling admin team.

About the role

Our North London Rape Crisis team work with women and girls over the age of 13 who have experienced any form of sexual violence at any point in their lives. 

Specialist advocates, counsellors, group therapists and helpline workers provide non-directive emotional and practical support and information to help women understand the impact of abuse, recover from the trauma they have experienced, and if a woman chooses, dedicated support through the Criminal Justice System from report to court and afterwards. They also provide support and advice for the friends and family of survivors, as well as professionals working alongside them.

This opportunity is ideal for someone looking to gain experience in administration within a busy counselling team and sexual violence service. The role will involve a range of administrative tasks such as:

• Data entry in our case management system
• Booking assessments/sessions appointments
• Sending appointment reminders to clients
• Gathering feedback, as well as other tasks as and when required.

Who are we looking for?

No formal qualifications are required for this role. We are looking for volunteers who have:

• Good administrative skills, including proficient use of Zoom/Microsoft Teams, Microsoft packages and Outlook
• Good written and verbal communication skills
• Good organisational skills
• Good understanding of confidentiality and professional boundaries.
• An understanding of the issues faced by survivors and a desire to build on this.
• An understanding of professional boundaries and confidentiality
• Good listening skills and an empathic, non-judgemental approach.

About CARAS: 

Community Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers (CARAS) is a charity that supports refugees and asylum-seekers living in South West London, and helps them to play their full part in the community. Arriving as an asylum seeker in the UK can be a terrifying and disempowering experience. Difficulties with language, accessing services and overcoming prejudice are ever-present. We exist to help people seeking asylum overcome those challenges, and to help them rebuild their lives. 

We offer a range of individual and group support to improve the holistic wellbeing of people who have a forced displacement background, providing them the tools they need to build lives filled with value, meaning and purpose in the UK. Our activities for adults include currently include: ESOL classes; sports; women’s creative writing; women’s coffee morning, and casework. 

About the CARAS Adult Team: 

In the post-pandemic environment, CARAS is responding to the role of digital literacies in our programme delivery to learners of asylum-seeking and refugee background. In contrast to the UK essential Digital skills framework, we have built in language inclusion to create a participatory learning course for Essential Digital Literacies for learners who are new to reading and writing in English. The individuals joining CARAS are highly diverse, with different countries of origin, linguistic and educational backgrounds. We have observed over the last year that many CARAS community members have limited digital skills, particularly in regard to using computers. Community members have highlighted that computers are important for many individuals to achieve their educational and employment goals, whilst increasing confidence and independence. We have co-designed a digital skills program in partnership with CARAS community members to improve computer literacy and skills, focusing on basic computer literacy.

About the Role: 

We are seeking two volunteers based in London to teach our lively computer classes in Tooting every Monday 9:00-11:00. Volunteers will lead the sessions with guidance from the CARAS ESOL Teacher and will work closely with our community members to build their skills and confidence using computers. The Digital Literacies course at CARAS is built around Pre-entry to Entry 2 levels in English. Volunteers will be supporting individuals with tasks such as: getting to know how to use a computer, using the internet, setting up an email address, and using Microsoft office. We intend to fold employability sessions, including CV writing and job searching, into these sessions. 

Volunteer Tasks and responsibilities: 

· Lead on the delivery of sessions with support from CARAS’s Essential Digital Skills Teacher. 

· Assist with the logistical set up of the sessions, supporting CARAS staff where needed. 

· Work collaboratively as a team and assisting to shape the project. 

· Create class registers and records as required. 

· To attend and contribute to volunteer pre- and de-briefs at each session. 

· To act as a positive role model and set standards of behaviour when volunteering. 

· Support people to develop their knowledge and skills and encourage and inspire participants to reach their full potential. 

· To assist participants to both, recognise and celebrate their achievements. 

· To challenge negative attitudes and behaviour in an appropriate manor. 

· Advocate for the rights of asylum seekers, refugees and migrants with not for them. 

· Adhering to CARAS Confidentiality policy, Health & Safety policy, Equal Opportunities policy and all other policies as relevant. 

Requirements: 

· To be non-judgemental, and able and willing to engage with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. 

· To be female identifying. 

· Have a good understanding of how to use a computer. 

· To be reliable and punctual. 

· Excellent presentation and communication skills, especially with people with varying levels of English. 

· Commitment to support people seeking asylum to take control of their asylum journey. 

· Ability to volunteer every Friday for a minimum of three months. 

· Current resident in the UK. 

· Ability to work in Tooting SW17. 

· To provide five years’ worth of addresses and be willing to undergo a DBS check. 

· To attend CARAS General and Safeguarding Training sessions. 

· To be 18 years or older.

We are seeking a reliable individual (or individuals to share the role) to assist us in supporting our teams of volunteers who work across our three projects: FareShare Greater Manchester, EMERGE Recycling and Touch Wood, as well as our parent charity, EMERGE 3Rs.

With your organisational skills, you’ll assist the Volunteer Management Team in the administration of our volunteer programmes and help us with the day-to-day operation of the office.
This position presents an excellent opportunity to gain valuable transferable skills that can be deployed across a wide range of working roles in future. 

This role is shared between several volunteers; each covering different shifts, so we have flexibility in accommodating what hours you are able to offer us.

ABOUT EMERGE

We operate three initiatives:

* FareShare Great Manchester - the regional hub of national charity FareShare UK, which redistributes overstocked food to community initiatives and food banks, diverting it from polluting landfill

* Touch Wood - our reclaimed wood workshop, which takes wood destined for landfill or incinerators and prepares it for resale or upcycles it into crafted items

* EMERGE Recycling - a pioneering recycling social enterprise

The volunteer administration support role is one of the broadest ranging opportunities we have on offer; being a blend of many working practices, from general administration to assisting with recruitment. You will be working with a diverse range of individuals, from many different types of backgrounds and circumstances, so a friendly attitude and an interest in helping people are advantageous traits for applicants.

Typical tasks include:

* Answering and redirecting phone calls and greeting visitors

* Assisting with monitoring information

* Assisting with preparation of induction sessions

* Undertaking routine tasks, e.g. photocopying, laminating

We are just a 15 minute bus ride from Manchester Piccadilly, with our brand new base, Maynard House, located on new Smithfield Market, which is only a few yards off a main arterial route into the city, Ashton Old Road. 

Public Transport

The market site can be easily reached by a number of bus services, with the 219 being the most frequent.

If travelling to us by car, please be aware that many satnav systems wrongly direct drivers to the rear of the market site. Instead, please enter by the main gate on Whitworth Street East (off Ashton Old Road). There is plenty of free parking on site.

There is a bus stop immediately opposite the main entrance to the market.

About CARAS:

Community Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers (CARAS) is a charity that supports refugees and people seeking asylum who live in south London, helping them to play their full part in the community. About the CARAS ESOL Team:

COVID has posed unprecedented challenges to refugees and people seeking asylum in London. Many of those we meet have arrived alone in the UK and have been living in contingency accommodation for many months. Our ESOL team offer English language classes to adults at a wide range of levels. This provides vital skills, opportunities and social contact and is crucial for enabling people to attend college and access other services in the future.

About the Role:

CARAS is looking for volunteer ESOL Teaching Assistants to support our online Zoom classes on Tuesday mornings:

Entry 1 class: 10 to 11.30am

Entry 2 class: 11.30am to 1pm (plus a 15-minute debrief)

You are welcome to apply to volunteer in one or both classes. Please note that ESOL classes do not run during school holidays, and we follow Wandsworth Council term dates.

As a volunteer ESOL Teaching Assistant your role is flexible and varied. It will involve supporting the Adult ESOL Teacher in the delivery of online Zoom classes, as well as providing learners with one-to-one or small-group support.

Volunteer  tasks and responsibilities:

Providing learners with one-to-one or small group support within ESOL classes;

Helping learners build confidence in digital literacy;

Attending and contributing to volunteer debriefs after each session;

Helping create “learner portraits” to understand their strengths and areas of interest;

Making use of any community languages you may know to help students during the class;

Working collaboratively as a team and helping to shape the project;

Supporting people to develop their knowledge and skills, encouraging and inspiring participants to reach their full potential;

Assisting participants to recognise and celebrate their achievements;

Following CARAS’ confidentiality, safeguarding, health & safety, equal opportunities, data management, online communications and all other policies as relevant.

Requirements: 

Essential:

To be 18 years or older;

An interest in education and English language teaching;

Discovery Catering Volunteer Wanted

We are looking for a volunteer to help support us during our monthly pop-up cafes. 

The role is a great opportunity for someone with a love of cooking to share their skills and/or learn more about vegetarian and vegan cooking.

As a volunteer for bemix you are also part of our wider social movement, working to achieve equality for people with learning difficulties and/or autism.

Role and responsibilities

Main aim:   To support the group members prepare and serve vegetarian and vegan meals, including greeting customers and taking payment for meals at our monthly pop-up cafe.

Location: Westgate Hall, Canterbury City Centre. 

Salary: This position is unpaid.

Expenses:   Reasonable travel expenses can be reimbursed. Please let us know details about where you will be travelling from and how much this will cost, when you apply. 

Hours: Between 4 to 6 hours per month. 10am – 2pm / 4pm.  Working with the Discovery Catering team one day each month, on a Tuesday.

Start date and Duration: To start as soon as possible, once DBS and References have been received and continue on an ongoing basis subject to regular reviews.

You will support our Administrators and front line workers with a range of administrative functions to support them with their daily activities and workload. This will give you the opportunity to be involved with a variety of administrative duties including filing, writing notes and supporting the front line workers with the administrative preparations of their group delivery and updating of their client case notes.

This is a fantastic opportunity to use your organisational and administrative skills while gaining an understanding of the roles and support function of our front line services.

The volunteer role will be subject to prison vetting and security checks. This is in addition to what is required for community working.

Accountabilities 

Service Delivery – Client support tasks

· Support administrative staff and front line workers with data entry onto database system.

· Provide assistance at reception/in admin office answering and taking messages and transferring phone calls.

· To assist with filing and maintaining of administration records in an orderly user-friendly system. 

· Support front line staff with administrative paperwork required for group sessions or group meetings.

· To assist with minute taking.

· To maintain confidentiality and data protection principles, raising any issues with your line manager as appropriate.

Additional tasks

· Engage in support and supervision provided.

· To keep a good record of your work, including reporting verbally to their supervisor and completing relevant forms.

This may vary depending on your specific team and time commitment.

Expenses

• Travel expenses (within 20 miles of the service) 
• Up to £6.50 lunch expenses.
• Any additional expenses will need to be pre-agreed with placement supervisor.

Mynshull’s Educational Foundation is committed to improving the life-chances of young people from Manchester and Salford, so they can grow up to fulfil their potential. Through the provision of small grants, we aim to reduce the barriers that young people face to education, skills and training.

We provide funding for young people aged 25 or under to help them obtain equipment, uniforms or experiences that support them in starting or continuing their education or training.  Some examples include grants towards the cost of school trips and residentials, text books, stationery, apprenticeship equipment such as tools, and musical instruments.

We are currently recruiting for trustees to join our board.  The right candidate will understand the challenges faced by young people in Manchester and Salford; this may be through their own lived experiences or through professional experience, for example in education or health and social care.  The successful candidate will be passionate about improving outcomes for young people.  Previous experience of being a trustee is not essential to this role.

As a trustee you would be expected to attend a minimum of 4 board meetings (2 hours each) per year, as well as commit approximately 1 to 2 hours per month to reviewing applications for funding (this can be done remotely, online).
