Sussex Emmaus is a charity dedicated to supporting individuals who have experienced social exclusion or homelessness. We provide accommodation for up to 58 people, offering a home, tailored support, and the opportunity to gain skills and work opportunities through social enterprises run by the charity.

We are now recruiting for a Warehouse Co-ordinator to ensure the efficient running of the warehouse (Undercroft). You will be joining a friendly and enthusiastic team who are passionate about what they do.

The Coordinator ensures the warehouse is organised and is following applicable laws and regulations. This includes working with Companions and volunteers, overseeing receiving, sorting and pricing of donations, always maximising income. This is a hands-on role where your ability to lead by example will motivate our team of Companions and volunteers to provide exemplary customer service and to generate a financial surplus to support the charity.

You will supervise and work alongside Companions who are allocated to the warehouse during the business operating hours with conduct issues being managed by the Business Manager. You will also supervise and work alongside volunteers who are allocated to the warehouse during business operating hours with the Business Manager handling any conduct issues that may arise.

Duties & responsibilities
People

• To work alongside and train Companions to increase their skill base and confidence
• To organise the deployment of tasks to individuals and team members
• To train, supervise, motivate, and inspire volunteers and companions.
• To help devise and deliver induction on standards of work to new team members so that retail activities are delivered to the agreed brand, including customer service, merchandising, pricing, stock control, and culture
• To ensure that all activities under supervision are engaging, enabling, empowering and holding to account the team members

Warehouse Operation

• To ensure effective and efficient day-to-day operations by maximising quality donations and minimising waste
• To ensure day-to-day smooth and productive processes are being implemented to excellent standards for quality, culture, and legislative compliance
• To be proactive in the generation of donated stock, managing stock collection efficiently and effectively to the agreed standards and timescales under Emmaus guidelines
• To ensure premises, Health & Safety, security, and maintenance checks and actions are complete within the identified time, and to identify new checks or actions to schedule as to comply with Health and Safety requirements
• To ensure that cover for the safe operation of the Undercroft is always sufficient
• To cover van driving shifts as needed.

Stock Management

• To work closely with all Retail Managers to ensure each retail enterprise is receiving adequate stock to generate their required weekly sales targets
• To be responsible for ensuring that only sellable donations and those that conform to all relevant UK government and trading standards legislation are accepted for resale in the shop
• To disseminate any changes from Trading Standards as and when to relevant parties to ensure compliance
• To ensure all donated items are sorted and priced and merchandised to receive the optimum for the charity and the correct procedures are applied throughout the sorting process to allow for coding and pricing to be applied to items

Safety, Health, and Environment

• To oversee all Health & Safety requirements within the warehouse, taking corrective action as and when required, and informing/liaising with managers and team as necessary
• To assist in compiling risk assessments with team members
• Ensure safe working systems are adhered to in conjunction with the Emmaus policies and procedures, and are compliant with all relevant legal requirements
• To ensure that Health & Safety is adhered to in terms of equipment use and that manual handling guidelines are followed
• Ensure work areas follow correct processing procedures, ensuring that the work area is always kept clean and tidy
• Assist in delivering Health & Safety training to new Companions and volunteers
• Recycling/Re-use and Waste Management
• To recommend creative ways to upcycle, reuse and repurpose stock to maximise profit and reduce wastage
• To supervise the disposal of unsaleable items to minimise waste as appropriate in line with Sussex Emmaus’s Environmental Policy and procurement Policy.

Sussex Emmaus is a 58 bed supported accommodation project. We offer low to medium support for those who have experienced or may be at risk of experiencing homelessness. Emmaus supports people to work their way out of homelessness, providing a home for as long as someone needs it. Emmaus works with people who may have faced multiple disadvantages. This can include but is not exclusive to: homelessness; mental health issues; contact with the criminal justice system; historical substance and/or alcohol misuse; and domestic abuse.
Emmaus is a homelessness charity with a difference, we offer a home, work and a sense of belonging. For many people who have experienced homelessness, losing their self-esteem can be the most damaging part of their experience. Emmaus provides an opportunity to work; it can be valuable in rebuilding companion’s self-esteem and self-worth. 

Job Summary:
Provide support to Companions using a person-centred approach, both emotionally and practically, so they can live and work in the Emmaus Community. The role will involve using a Strength Based Practice model to encourage Companions to become resilient and fulfilled. Assist Companions to become independent and maximise their skills, where necessary accessing outside support and services. Where appropriate, in accordance with Companion requests, provide a move-on pathway that enables them to be ready to live independently. 
Promote and embed a proactive approach to equality and diversity, by example and approach, with a commitment to treat all staff, volunteers, visitors and Companions with equity and respect.

Senior Education Officer

Are you passionate about environmental issues, in particular nature restoration, climate resilience and biodiversity?

Do you have experience working with young audiences, preferably within a wildlife or conservation setting? Do you have a good grasp of ecology and be willing to travel around the country to support learning education opportunities as well as being confident running sessions or delivering train-the-trainer sessions online?

We are looking for a Senior Education Officer, with the skill set to inspire people to connect with nature, support teachers, deliver talks, presentations and education sessions, while developing further opportunities within the team for learning through the subject of beavers.

Position: Senior Education Officer

Location: Remote (his role requires frequent travel and overnight stays)

Hours: Full time (37.5 hours per week)

Contract: Fixed (2 years)

Salary: £32,827 pa

About the Role

We are looking to hire a skilled and engaging Senior Education Officer to join a busy team, to further develop and implement an educational outreach programme which reaches children in Wales, Scotland and England. At present, this post has funding for three years from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, one year of which is now complete and we are looking to deliver the second two years of the project.

The purpose of the role is to extend the passion and knowledge of beavers into communities around Britain, to engage and enthuse young people and to reconnect (or reinforce) their love of nature. Using current materials and resources you will do so by delivering high-quality learning sessions within schools, community groups or virtual training sessions, sometimes delivered in conjunction with our beaver site partners and their education teams.

You will also be responsible for developing further aspects of the programme according to the requirements for each country and in partnership with relevant organisations

Key responsibilities include:

• Deliver a range of exciting, curriculum-linked workshops, talks, school and group sessions associated with beaver release sites.
• Network and build contacts and relationships with key personnel in schools, youth groups and community groups in order to create engagement with the education programme and expand its reach.
• Develop further resources and engaging activities or projects for group learning.
• Deliver standard level beaver ecology training to a range of age groups.
• Ensure the education programmes are up-to-date, accurate and complement the wider delivery of our mission.
• Monitor, collate and report on impact, working with the communications team to support the effective evaluation of our programme.
• Support volunteers and build capacity working with partner staff in the delivery of beaver education programmes.
• Work with the team to allocate resources ensuring education initiatives are well planned, deliver maximum value for money and remain within budget.
• Consider equality, diversity and inclusion in the approach to all education initiatives, supported with external expertise.
• Follow policies, standard operating procedures and safe working practices to ensure our work with visiting education groups complies with all relevant guidelines and legislation, including health and safety, safeguarding, copyright and GDPR.

About You

Essential:

• A degree in a zoology, biology or conservation-related field, or a teaching/education qualification or equivalent experience in teaching across a wide range of ages and abilities, using different delivery methods including virtual delivery.
• The ability to communicate complex concepts in an innovative and engaging way to a wide (and/or young) audience.
• Good organisation skills including time management, administration, workload planning and meeting deadlines.
• A strong interest in nature, conservation and restoration and an understanding of the role beavers can play in our landscapes’ recovery.
• Working knowledge of safeguarding legislation and policies and procedures.
• Be prepared to undergo an Enhanced DBS with barred list.
• Experience in confidently using IT packages for teaching delivery, including the use of tablets, presentation software and audiovisual.

You will need to have a full valid UK driving licence and the right to work in the UK.
