About School of Hard Knocks
School of Hard Knocks (SOHK) is one of the UK’s leading education charities, working in 29 secondary schools across England, Scotland, and Wales. Using rugby as a key delivery tool, we support young people who are struggling to engage in early secondary education - often because of anxiety, low confidence, disrupted home lives, or behavioural challenges rooted in trauma. For many of the children we support, life has already brought more hardship than most adults experience in a lifetime. Our purpose is clear: to help young people facing complex challenges break the cycle and move towards a safer, stronger, more hopeful future.
The SOHK Schools Programme is a two-year intervention working with cohorts of around 20 pupils from Year 7 through to Year 9. Pupils are selected by the school and are typically among the hardest to reach young people. Each week, we deliver half a day of rugby training and classroom sessions built around our 3Cs framework, covering topics such as growth mindset, goal setting, and decision-making, alongside monthly one-to-one sessions with every pupil. The programme’s impact is evaluated by SOHK staff, teachers, parents, and the pupils themselves.
90% of our participants report feeling more confident and more engaged with school after taking part, with long-term effects on attendance, attainment, and life outcomes. Find out more about our Schools Programme.
Since 2023, SOHK has been proud to partner with Impetus, a charity that invests in and supports organisations helping young people from disadvantaged backgrounds succeed. This partnership combines investment with strategic and organisational development support, helping to strengthen our impact and set SOHK up for sustainable growth.
We are proud to be delivering long-term programmes that meaningfully reach hundreds of young people each year - but the societal need is vast. Our ambitious four-year strategic plan targets growth, aiming to bring our impactful programme to hundreds more young people each year.
“Despite the usual challenges that every education or sport for development charity faces, School of Hard Knocks really is unique. It is not so much what we deliver at a programme level (which is of course brilliant) but who we are as a team. If you are a values-led leader and love the idea of ‘team’, then School of Hard Knocks is the place for you.”
- Ken Cowen, Founder and outgoing CEO

About you
You will be a confident and approachable community engagement professional with strong digital and technology skills and the ability to make technology accessible to people with different levels of confidence, literacy, language and experience.
You will enjoy working directly with communities, sitting alongside people to solve practical problems, running groups and training, and finding culturally appropriate and creative ways to build digital confidence and independence. Through this work, you will identify common needs and help develop practical, culturally grounded training, resources and approaches that can be used more widely with communities.
You will also bring strong practical knowledge of digital tools and emerging technologies, including AI, and be able to support HHU colleagues to use technology effectively, safely and confidently in their community work.
This is an evolving role. You will be curious, adaptable and comfortable testing new approaches as technology, AI, community needs and Bhip develop, while maintaining good judgement around accessibility, privacy, ethics, risk and digital exclusion.
The Opportunity
You will join HHU and the Bhip programme at an important point in their development, as we expand our community work and explore how digital technology and AI can help reduce, rather than widen, health inequities. Through Bhip’s co-design, test-and-learn approach, there is real potential for what we develop to influence practice across Bradford and contribute learning more widely.
This is a distinctive and evolving role, combining hands-on community engagement with strong digital and technical expertise. You will help shape practical approaches to digital inclusion, develop culturally grounded support and training, and explore how emerging technology and AI can be used safely, ethically and creatively by communities and the HHU team.
You will also have opportunities to work creatively with Bhip’s co-design and communications colleagues and with digital filmmakers, content creators and others, exploring new ways for communities to participate, tell their stories, build skills and influence change through technology.
As technology, communities and Bhip develop, so will this role, giving you genuine scope to test ideas, learn what works and help shape how digital inclusion is approached in practice.

Are you passionate about ensuring young people across the world are given opportunities to learn, earn and thrive? Do you have contextual knowledge of, and experience working in, the Caribbean?
If so, read on!
We are looking for an International Programmes Executive to support the expansion and delivery of our programmes in the Caribbean.
King’s Trust International works with local partners around the world to help them deliver education, employment and enterprise programmes for young people.
You will work closely with the International Programme Manager and wider Caribbean team to support delivery across the region. You will work with a mixture of governments, NGOs, corporate partners and employers to support them to deliver safe and impactful programmes, meet agreed targets, and report on progress to both internal and external stakeholders. You will be the local partners’ ‘critical friend’ and focal point of contact. This may include delivering programme design and training, producing toolkits and resources, developing evaluation frameworks, and potentially supporting partners to set up new programmes. You will work with local partners on all aspects of programme delivery — project implementation, review, monitoring and evaluation, and budget management.
Perks for working at The King’s Trust International:
We believe that every young person should have the chance to succeed, no matter their background or the challenges they are facing.

At Hestia, we are guided by our core values and are dedicated to fostering an equitable, diverse, and inclusive organisation. Our mission is to empower individuals to rebuild their lives and achieve independence. Right now, we are looking for a GEC Coordinator to play a pivotal role in our Mental Health Service in Kingston.
Sounds great, what will I be doing?
As a GEC Coordinator, you will act as the central point of contact for volunteers and members of the Good Energy Club, coordinating a varied programme of physical activity, wellbeing groups, and community-based opportunities that promote health, independence, and social inclusion. You will recruit, train, support, and retain volunteers, ensuring a positive and consistent volunteering experience that reflects the diverse needs of service users. Working closely with community partners, healthcare professionals, and internal teams, you will develop strategic relationships, manage project budgets, maintain accurate records and outcome data, secure funding opportunities, and promote the club's activities. You will also empower members to shape and participate in the project, helping to increase engagement in physical activity and improve overall wellbeing.
What do I need to bring with me?
You'll need to be able to demonstrate the core skills this role requires as well as match our values and mission. You don't have to tick all the boxes right away; the important thing is that you're willing to learn. We also value lived experience of the areas we support, so if you feel comfortable, please do mention this on your application.
In this role, you will need experience delivering sports, wellbeing, or physical activity programmes to a diverse range of participants, including individuals with mental health support needs. You will possess a strong understanding of the challenges faced by people experiencing mental health difficulties and demonstrate excellent communication, engagement, and customer service skills. Experience of managing groups, coordinating stakeholders, and working as part of a multidisciplinary team is essential. You should be highly organised, capable of producing reports, maintaining accurate records, and managing administrative responsibilities effectively. Strong time-management skills, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently are important, alongside a flexible and proactive approach to supporting service users and delivering high-quality services.
