Director of Public Fundraising & Engagement
Salary: £85,000
Location: Hybrid (London HQ)
Mencap is embarking on an exciting period of fundraising growth and transformation, creating a rare opportunity for an ambitious and strategic fundraising leader to join the organisation as Director of Public Fundraising & Engagement. With strong backing from the Chief Executive, Board and Executive Team, public fundraising is recognised as a critical source of flexible, unrestricted income that enables Mencap to deliver meaningful impact for people with a learning disability and their families.

At a pivotal point in their strategy, you will lead an established and ambitious portfolio across Individual Giving, Community and Events, and Legacies, helping grow sustainable income, extend their reach and build deeper relationships with the people who support Mencap's work.

While there are areas of strong performance and established success, there are also significant opportunities to strengthen strategic planning, prioritisation, audience development and supporter engagement. The successful candidate will help shape the organisation's next fundraising strategy, ensuring investment decisions, income ambitions and delivery plans are aligned and achievable.
Potential Early Objectives / Success Measures
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:
Above all, we are looking for an inspiring and collaborative leader who is excited by the opportunity to modernise, strengthen and grow one of the sector's most important public fundraising portfolios. This is a unique opportunity to help shape the future of fundraising at Mencap, building on strong foundations while unlocking significant untapped potential across supporter engagement and income generation.

Beder is looking for an ambitious, entrepreneurial and hands-on Head of Fundraising & Partnerships to lead the next stage of our growth.
Beder was established in memory of Beder Mirjan, who sadly took his own life in 2017 at the age of 18. Since then, we have spent the past eight years working to raise awareness around mental health and suicide prevention, challenge stigma and, increasingly, provide tangible support to people who need it.
The focus of our work is the Beder Therapy Voucher programme, through which we fund free therapy for people (18+) across the UK as we all need someone to talk to with demand for that support growing significantly.
Until now, much of Beder's fundraising has been founder-led, supported by an incredible network of ambassadors, partners, businesses and individuals. We have built exciting partnerships across sport, business, entertainment and hospitality whilst creating a charity with an engaged community and an ambitious vision for the future.
We are now ready to build a dedicated and sustainable fundraising function so we are looking for someone who can take ownership of that journey.
This isn't a role for someone who simply wants to manage an existing fundraising programme as we are looking for someone who enjoys building one. Whilst working closely with our founder, trustees and wider team, you will develop and execute Beder's fundraising strategy, building sustainable income across corporate partnerships, major donors, trusts and foundations, individual giving, campaigns and events.
You will inherit a compelling cause, an established brand, strong relationships and a growing pipeline of opportunities – but you will also have the freedom to shape how Beder approaches fundraising for the future.
We are looking for someone who is equally comfortable developing a fundraising strategy, writing a compelling funding proposal, meeting a potential corporate partner and picking up the phone to a prospective supporter.
Above all, we want someone who believes in what Beder is trying to achieve and wants to roll their sleeves up and help us build something special.
Our immediate objective is to develop a diversified fundraising programme capable of sustaining our Beder Therapy Voucher service enabling Beder to meet the growing demand for free therapy while continuing to expand our wider mental health and suicide prevention work.
The successful candidate will have significant autonomy to develop the strategy, partnerships and fundraising infrastructure required to achieve that.
We are open to candidates from a range of fundraising backgrounds and would particularly welcome experience across corporate partnerships, philanthropy/major donors, trusts and foundations and strategic fundraising.
Experience within mental health is welcome but is not essential.
What matters most is that you are an outstanding relationship builder, an effective fundraiser and someone excited by the opportunity to help take a small, ambitious charity into its next chapter.
Provides free therapy for those 18+ nationwide whilst taking a unique approach to softly raising awareness around mental health and suicide prevention

You will need:
Role summary: You will work with the Community Savers Leadership and key partners on the strategic development of community action, projects, and partnerships that reduce health inequalities and promote social justice. This will include networking and building relationships with existing and potential statutory and non-statutory partners; bringing in appropriate expertise to achieve community-led development projects; direct support for community action such as community-led research projects and partnerships; community mapping, visioning and action planning; supporting reflection and evaluation; and sharing learning widely. You will also supervise the coordination support provided to affiliated groups and leaders by our Community Action Coordinator (Manchester); ensuring a community-led process underpins leadership and associational development.
Please download the application pack for further information and a full job description noting that this is a 0.6% FTE 3-year fixed term contract (actual salary pro rata).

About School of Hard Knocks
School of Hard Knocks (SOHK) is one of the UK’s leading education charities, working in 29 secondary schools across England, Scotland, and Wales. Using rugby as a key delivery tool, we support young people who are struggling to engage in early secondary education - often because of anxiety, low confidence, disrupted home lives, or behavioural challenges rooted in trauma. For many of the children we support, life has already brought more hardship than most adults experience in a lifetime. Our purpose is clear: to help young people facing complex challenges break the cycle and move towards a safer, stronger, more hopeful future.
The SOHK Schools Programme is a two-year intervention working with cohorts of around 20 pupils from Year 7 through to Year 9. Pupils are selected by the school and are typically among the hardest to reach young people. Each week, we deliver half a day of rugby training and classroom sessions built around our 3Cs framework, covering topics such as growth mindset, goal setting, and decision-making, alongside monthly one-to-one sessions with every pupil. The programme’s impact is evaluated by SOHK staff, teachers, parents, and the pupils themselves.
90% of our participants report feeling more confident and more engaged with school after taking part, with long-term effects on attendance, attainment, and life outcomes. Find out more about our Schools Programme.
Since 2023, SOHK has been proud to partner with Impetus, a charity that invests in and supports organisations helping young people from disadvantaged backgrounds succeed. This partnership combines investment with strategic and organisational development support, helping to strengthen our impact and set SOHK up for sustainable growth.
We are proud to be delivering long-term programmes that meaningfully reach hundreds of young people each year - but the societal need is vast. Our ambitious four-year strategic plan targets growth, aiming to bring our impactful programme to hundreds more young people each year.
“Despite the usual challenges that every education or sport for development charity faces, School of Hard Knocks really is unique. It is not so much what we deliver at a programme level (which is of course brilliant) but who we are as a team. If you are a values-led leader and love the idea of ‘team’, then School of Hard Knocks is the place for you.”
- Ken Cowen, Founder and outgoing CEO
