Independent journalism provides us with the facts we need to make informed decisions, Often, those on the frontlines are freelance truth-tellers, without the support of a large news organisation. The Rory Peck Trust seeks to empower them with the knowledge, resources and resilience they need to report from some of the most dangerous places in the world, safely and without fear. It provides training, equipping freelancers with potentially lifesaving first aid skills. It offers emergency financial assistance when things go wrong. And it ensures access to mental health therapy, enabling those who have experienced trauma to continue their vital work. The Trust also advocates for freelancers, honouring the world's best independent journalism at the Rory Peck Awards every November.

Over the last three decades it has helped more than 3,300 journalists, providing more than £3 million in financial assistance, every penny donated by the Trust's donors and supporters, drawn largely from UK, European and US media. But thirty years after it was founded, demand for the Trust's services is greater than ever. 2025 was the deadliest ever for members of the media, while near record numbers of journalists are in jail.

Role details

• Position: Finance & Operations Manager

The Role

The Finance & Operations Manager is a senior, hands-on leadership role, responsible for ensuring the Trust is financially robust, well-governed, legally compliant and operationally effective.

Reporting to the Executive Director and working closely with the Board of Trustees, the postholder will lead on finance, HR, IT and organisational systems, and act as Secretary to the Board. This role provides the operational backbone that enables the Trust's programmes, partnerships and advocacy work to succeed, and requires confidence, judgement and discretion at board level.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, cashflow and reporting
• Prepare management accounts and liaise with external accountants and auditors
• Support the Board on financial planning, reserves, and organisational risk
• Act as Secretary to the Board, coordinating meetings, papers and governance records
• Ensure compliance with Charity Commission and regulatory requirements
• Lead HR operations, including recruitment, contracts, policies and staff wellbeing
• Oversee IT systems, data protection, insurance, contracts and operational risk

We are delighted to be partnering with Hornet Services Sailing Club, a not-for-profit members’ Club providing high-quality and affordable sailing, marina and social facilities for serving and veteran members of the Armed Forces and MOD civil servants. The Club operates a 180-berth marina, a busy clubhouse with a 7-day a week bar and restaurant, a varied programme of formal and social events, leased and listed buildings (including Grade 2* listed), and boat storage facilities.

With 500 members, 180 berth holders and an annual turnover of circa £1.1m, the new Club General Manager will be the most senior paid staff member and hold full responsibility for the Club’s performance, financial sustainability and day-to-day delivery. Working closely with the Commodore, Flag Officers and Committee, and supported by a management team, you will shape the overall member experience while ensuring the Club operates safely, efficiently and in line with its values and traditions.

This is a broad, hands-on leadership role where no two days are the same. You will oversee marina operations, hospitality services, estate and facilities management, governance and compliance, staff leadership and member engagement. You will have genuine scope to influence standards, develop people, improve systems and processes and ensure the long-term sustainability of a much-loved organisation.

To succeed in this role, you’ll bring:

• Relevant professional experience, including the management of a multi-functional organisation and strategic business planning and delivery

• Use the Much Loved (or similar platform) to develop tributes and opportunities for further in memory dedications, event participation and increase financial donations. 
• Establish a communication process with funeral directors and keeping these records up to date on Salesforce.

Leading national policy strategy

As Head of Policy and Public Affairs, you will work closely with the CEO to develop and execute a four-year influencing plan.  Together we’ll aim to shift local and national incentives on inclusion by 2030, which see the national trend of rising suspension and absence begin to fall. 

You will hold relationships with the Department for Education and Ofsted and advise on policy priorities ahead, such as:

• Widening the definition of inclusion beyond special needs, recognising the needs of those young people historically or currently interacting with social services

• Reducing perverse incentives for schools to alter their school roll through admissions and pupil exits

• Expectations for multi-academy trusts in capturing and analysing data on lost learning, including how it disproportionately affects different groups

• Improving local alternative provision eco-systems, to improve outcomes for young people

• National standards for inclusive school practice, at a universal and targeted level

• Professional development standards for school inclusion

Developing implementation expertise in the middle tier

In your first six months, you will advise on the internal development of a new programme for middle tier policy actors: multi-academy trust and local authority leaders.  You will support the Programme team in its design, to plan strategically for the recruitment of trusts and local authorities, and you will plan the research and influencing work which will seek to share their success nationally.

Building the evidence base

In your second six months, you will work with the CEO to build out our research function. Your influencing plan will include how The Difference can learn from the work across our multi-academy trust, local authority and internal AP pioneer partners over the next four years, to develop influential publications. Research work ahead will include publishing sector-facing publications of The Difference’s own research, carried out by our research lead and associates; alongside managing external contractors and internal colleagues to bid for and deliver aligned research disseminating our ideas.

Raising your voice

This is an exciting opportunity for someone committed to inclusive policy change. The Difference has always punched above our weight in national and sector press reach. In post,  you will publish blogs and comment pieces, disseminating our shared ideas.  You will be a prominent voice on inclusion.

The Role

Design and execute an impactful influencing plan 

• Design an influencing plan - Identify via horizon scanning opportunities to influence national policy using open policy windows, or by nudging/creating new ones.

Essential – We are looking for someone with the following knowledge, experience and skills, though you may be stronger in some areas than others:

• Deep expertise in education policy, particularly on the topic of lost learning and the various policy and political debates, including areas of controversy, surrounding this policy topic. 

• Strategic thinker with a proven track record in identifying policy windows and designing activities that lead to meaningful national policy change.

We are a large-scale restoration and hospitality project in the Northwest Highlands with strong philanthropic and community commitments. The heart of our operation is on a remote and beautiful 766-acre island. In 2026 we will become a Scottish charity - The Tanera Project – with core purposes spanning rural regeneration, resilience building in our public services via the provision of respite breaks, and ecosystem restoration.

We are looking for a Team Lead to take on the coordination of our Land and Estates Team across our island and mainland properties, totalling 6,500 acres of grounds, in-bye land, woodland and hill. The team has a wide remit, including grasskeeping, landscaping, regenerative agriculture on a crofting-scale, livestock, stalking, fishing, horses, guest activities, and supporting our gardens, ecology and path teams with extra hands when needed. The team is five strong, supported by seasonal hands, volunteers and staff from other teams working multifunctionally.

Our land management approach balances production, nature, and heritage, with an emphasis on using the land to build communities. We share everything we do with guests and volunteers so planning for and delivering shared activities is a core part of the role. We deliver our activities with an impeccable aesthetic centred round heritage, industry and creativity, requiring a real eye for detail. The Land and Estates Team covers several core functions in the charity and has a diverse remit with competing priorities so this role will appeal to proven leaders, able to deliver both on the ground and in terms of planning and organisation. It will involve turning a hand to many different tasks and many hours out and about in our challenging West Coast environment.

Regeneration
We are looking for an excellent coordinator with demonstrable experience in leading a team with a wide remit and proficiency in at least two of the team focus areas: grounds-keeping, agriculture, estate work, horses and working with guests and volunteers in an outdoor environment. The right candidate will be an experienced, creative, resourceful and flexible professional. They will have an interest in landscape scale regeneration that is attentive to heritage, productivity (food and more) and ecosystems. The salary for this role will be £40-50kpa, depending on experience.

Resilience
Our team comes from across the country and further afield. We have our own growing island community of staff, guests and volunteers, while also being embedded in mainland life in nearby crofting townships and villages. The work of the Land and Estates team is wide-ranging and there are also opportunities to work with different teams and on different projects, sail heritage boats, work with our horses, host guests, school groups and volunteers, and generally get involved with island life.
