The Role

This is a hands-on communications role sitting at the centre of a small, ambitious and growing charity.

The Communications Manager will take responsibility for planning, coordinating and delivering communications across Not A Phase. You will bring together communications from across our services, campaigns, fundraising, partnerships and events, ensuring that what we communicate is engaging, accessible, consistent and recognisably Not A Phase.

This is not simply a social media role. We are looking for someone who can see the bigger picture of the charity's communications while also being comfortable doing the work themselves - writing copy, developing campaigns, briefing creatives, producing content, updating the website, coordinating photography and filming, creating newsletters and making sure projects actually get delivered.

You will work closely with colleagues across the organisation to understand what is happening within our services and turn that activity into compelling communications for our community, supporters, partners, funders and the wider public.

You will also play an important role in protecting and developing the voice of Not A Phase: positive, confident, human, community-led and grounded in the lived experiences of trans+ people.

Key Responsibilities

1. Strategy, Planning & Coordination

• Own and deliver an organisation-wide communications plan aligned with Not A Phase’s strategy and priorities.

• Maintain a forward calendar covering services, campaigns, events, partnerships, fundraising and key dates.

• Work across teams to identify opportunities, coordinate activity and ensure projects are supported from launch through to impact.

2. Content, Storytelling & Brand

• Lead on writing and editing clear, accessible content for web, email, campaigns, reports, fundraising, partnerships and organisational updates.

• Tell compelling stories that reflect the breadth of our work and celebrate trans+ community, creativity, achievement and joy.

• Protect and develop the Not A Phase brand, messaging and tone of voice, helping colleagues and partners communicate consistently.

3. Digital, Social & Campaigns

• Lead our digital and social media communications, representing our programmes, locations, communities and partnerships.

• Plan joined-up campaigns across social media, email, web and partner channels, including relevant LGBTQIA+ and diversity calendar moments.

• Keep our website and email communications current, grow audiences and use performance data to improve activity.

4. Content Capture & Creative Production

• Plan photography, video, testimonials and other content across services and events.

• Attend selected activities to capture or coordinate content, managing external creatives where needed.

• Maintain an organised asset library and ensure consent, safeguarding and privacy processes are followed.

5. Community Reach & Service Communications

• Clearly communicate our services, who they are for and how to access them.

• Develop targeted communications to increase participation and reach new and underrepresented audiences, including people outside major cities.

• Use feedback to make communications clearer, more accessible and effective.

6. Partnerships, Fundraising & Impact

• Support fundraising and partnership communications, clearly showing the value and impact of support.

• Create materials, stories and case studies using service data, feedback and testimonials.

• To carry out a maximum number of proactive calls to people affected by PSP & CBD within the region as directed by the Helpline Manager.
• Develop and maintain the existing database of key health and social care professionals and regional services.
• Attend outreach events to build the profile of PSPA services amongst health and social care professionals.
• To deliver awareness and learning sessions to HSCP’s within your region
• Work with the Director of Policy and Influencing to identify ways in which services and care can be improved for families affected by PSP & CBD in the region.
• To signpost to PSPA Support Groups and services.
• Liaise with external services to signpost to local support.
• Take an active part in the delivery and planning of information and support events, which may include the possibility of overnight stays and weekends.
• Liaise with the fundraising team to signpost to fundraising activities.
• Liaise with the Volunteer Coordinator to maintain and build volunteering in the region.
• To attend and contribute constructively to team and other meetings as required.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria:

• Experience in delivering helpline and/or information and support services
• Excellent listening and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to listen actively understanding different points of view
• Ability to keep accurate records
• Willingness to undertake training and continuing personal development
• Experience of and sensitivity to communicating with audiences from a range of backgrounds
• Strong IT skills, with experience in MS Office products and customer relationship management software
• Flexible and reliable attitude and the ability to self-organise and to work without direct supervision
• Good communication skills, both oral and written and excellent telephone manner
• Ability to manage difficulty questions, emotions and situations in a calm and confident way.

Desirable Criteria:

• Knowledge of PSP & CBD or other neurodegenerative diseases and/or experience of working in the NHS

Broxtowe Youth Homelessness (BYH) is a small, well-established charity supporting young people aged 16–25 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Our practical, person-centred approach helps young people move towards greater stability, independence and opportunity.
