About us
We are a world-class visitor attraction and leading science research centre. We use the Museum's unique collections and our unrivalled expertise to tackle the biggest challenges facing the world today. We care for more than 80 million objects spanning billions of years and welcome more than five million visitors annually and 16 million visits to our website.
Today the Museum is more relevant and influential than ever. By attracting people from a range of backgrounds to work for us, we can continue to look at the world with fresh eyes and find new ways of doing things.
We employ 1100 staff in a variety of roles, all united by our vision of a future where people and planet thrive. We need everyone to have the passion and drive to help us with our mission to create advocates for our planet and inspire millions to care about the natural world.
This role is specifically working as part of the Distributed System of Scientific Collections UK programme.
UK natural science collections hold more than 140 million items. These are an unrivalled source of data about how the Earth and its natural systems formed over 4.56 billion years, with the potential to support research that addresses some of the critical issues facing the world, including biodiversity and climate change. They contain evidence of the changes in the natural world including the impact of human life on our planet over the past few thousand years. The scientific, commercial, and societal benefits of these collections are currently constrained by the limits of physical access, and by highly fragmented digitisation efforts with less than 10% digitally available.
DiSSCo UK is a consortium of UK natural science collections, led by the Natural History Museum in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), who are developing a national infrastructure to support the digitisation and use of the UK’s natural science collections to support this critical research.
This will take the form of a 10-year programme focused on digitisation of critical mass of collections as FAIR data, made available through a well-supported backbone of technology infrastructure, with continued development and application of innovative approaches such as greater use of Artificial Intelligence and robotics. Investment of the order of £155m over ten years from 2026-27 is expected to unlock at least a four-fold economic return on investment, as well as efficiency savings for UK and global researchers, and the potential for research innovation and studies that have not previously been possible – underpinning a future in which both people and planet thrive.
Diversity and inclusion matter to us.
Our vision is of a future where both people and the planet thrive. Diversity is one of our core values and we strive to build a workplace where everyone feels a sense of belonging. All new staff who join us learn about the importance of diversity and inclusion to the Museum and how to contribute to creating an inclusive environment.
We know we have more to do, but we are committed to ensuring that everyone who works at the Museum feels they can thrive and feel valued and respected.
About the role
The Collection Assistant plays a vital role in ensuring collections are accessible, well-organised, and prepared in advance of digitisation activities. Working closely with digitisation teams, curators, and collection managers, you will help scale up operations for the accessibility and transparency of important scientific collections.
This position is an excellent opportunity to contribute to a nationally significant programme of work during a key phase of DiSSCo UK’s rollout. We encourage applications from candidates (both internal and external) who fulfil most of the key competencies and are willing to support training and personal development opportunities to fill any knowledge gaps.
This role is based within the Museum’s Digital, Data and Informatics (DDI) Department and reports to the relevant Unit Lead (Entomology or Botany).
This is a fixed term role until 31 March 2028.
About you
Are you passionate about making natural science collections accessible to researchers, policymakers, and the public worldwide? DiSSCo UK is seeking enthusiastic and detail-oriented Collection Assistant to help transform the Natural History Museum’s physical collections into high-quality digital records.
We are looking for a proactive and organised Collection Assistant to support the preparation, care, and movement of natural science collections for digitisation.
We are looking for strong communicators with excellent attention to detail, who can team up with both DiSSCo UK and NHM curatorial teams. You will have a pragmatic approach to problem solving and escalating issues in a timely manner. Above all, you thrive in a team environment, are enthusiastic about collections data and their organisation and place collaboration at the heart of your work.

About Global Canopy
Global Canopy is a data-driven not for profit delivering real transparency and accountability for market impacts on nature and people. Our special focus is on ending deforestation – an essential step in achieving urgent global goals on climate, nature and human rights.
Our platforms, data and insights are relied upon by Fortune 500 companies, major financial institutions, national and regional governments, and some of the most effective campaigning organisations worldwide.
We work globally, with a focus on both forested regions (particularly across Latin America and South East Asia), and major consumer and financial markets (with a focus on Europe, the US, Singapore and China).
About Corporate Performance
A growing number of companies and financial institutions are seeking to mitigate their impacts on nature. But many have made commitments that are not being met, and others are failing to take any action at all.
We hold the most exposed companies and financial institutions to account through our Forest 500 project, by assessing their policies and performance.
With our suite of Deforestation-free Finance Guidance and a forthcoming new tool, DEFT Pathway, we provide tools and data for financial institutions and investors to support effective engagement with high-risk companies. You’ll be providing a high-quality, frontline service to survivors of domestic abuse and play a crucial role in advocacy, risk assessment, safety planning and empowerment for our clients with more complex needs. You will assist them in recognising the features and dynamics of domestic abuse which are impacting their situation and help them to regain control of their lives. You will support them to make informed and safe choices and to move forward. You will provide a weekly drop-in at Catching Lives and will co-work with clients as appropriate.
Alongside working with survivors, you will develop and maintain productive relationships with partner organisations to strengthen multi-agency working and improve service outcomes for survivors. - Identify training opportunities and provide training and support for housing staff and other relevant agencies as appropriate
- Provide both formal training and informal guidance/casework support to Catching Lives staff.
- Work with volunteers (where appropriate) to enhance the capacity of the service
- Be responsible for personal well-being and exercise appropriate self-care
- Attend wider team meetings to share learning and feed into organisational developments
- Ensure that the service user is at the heart of all service delivery by encouraging participation in service development and reporting on their recommendations and complaints
- Be willing and available to work occasional evenings and weekends to support wider team activities such as representing Rising Sun at events (time off in lieu can be taken)
- Ensure publicity materials are effectively distributed as well as contributing to the development of literature
