Medact is looking for an experienced campaigner and organiser to lead our work advocating for a justice-centred approach to securitisation and peace work.
Background
Medact organises with the health community to win a world in which everyone can truly achieve and exercise their human right to health. We cover some of the most pressing national and global threats to health and wellbeing including institutional racism; climate change; human rights abuses; violent conflict; and rising inequality. We’re a member-led organisation, and our members are made up of a range of people who work in health including nurses, doctors, midwives, and clinical researchers.
We take an organising-centred approach to our work. We build community power by working in solidarity with health workers and the communities experiencing harm from the unjust systems we challenge. We run national campaigns, use research to expose injustice, and we support local organising groups across the country who lead most of our work.
About the role
The Transforming Peace & Security Campaigner will lead Medact’s campaigning for healthcare spaces which truly centre health and health justice, not surveillance, profiling and policing, in addition to providing ongoing strategic support to members organising against war and nuclear threat.
This role will lead on our strategic priority area of Ending State Violence. The campaigner will implement campaign strategy focused on targeted organising to build coalitions and solidarity with marginalised communities, continuing our campaign against the Prevent duty in health, and supporting our Medact Abolitionist Approaches to Health Group. They’ll also work with our established Nuclear Weapons group to promote disarmament and encourage investment in nonviolent responses to conflict. The role involves maintaining and deepening existing partnerships with external organisations, grassroots groups and institutions.
About you
This isn’t an entry-level role but you don’t need to have had a job in an NGO before or be a professional campaigner to be right for it. You might have worked with your local community to campaign on a social justice or health issue that you care about. Or you might be a healthcare worker who has seen the impact of securitisation on your patients and wants to challenge the encroachment of policing and profiling. You’ll have a strong understanding of power and how to work with others to create pressure for change. You need to be a great communicator, able to build trusting relationships with Medact members, academics, partner organisations, and community groups alike. You’ll have an understanding of how digital communications compliment campaigning and an eye for a good media story and the know-how to get it out into the world.

A sound knowledge of housing law, welfare benefits, legal remedies available to survivors, safeguarding legislation, and the legal framework surrounding sex work is highly desirable. Above all, the role requires someone who can build trusting, non-judgemental relationships, empower service users to achieve their goals, remain calm under pressure, and demonstrate a commitment to collaboration, service user involvement, and continuous professional development.

ShareAction is an independent charity and an expert on responsible investment. We work to build a world where the financial system serves our planet and its people. We set ambitious standards for how financial institutions, through their investment decisions, can protect our planet and its people and campaign for this approach to become the norm. We convene shareholders to collectively push companies to tackle the climate crisis, protect nature, improve workers’ rights and shape healthier societies. In the UK and EU, we advocate for financial regulation that has society’s best interests at its core.
Position
The Programme Manager will work to support the Programme Lead in ensuring the smooth and effective running of ShareAction’s Energy Transition Programme, which aims to contribute to tackling the climate crisis. This pivotal role will lead the implementation of effective programme management processes and systems to plan, monitor and drive programme delivery, performance and expenditure. It will also support fundraising activity, events and external stakeholder engagement for the programme, and represent the programme with colleagues across the organisation to co-ordinate delivery, manage dependencies and ensure strategic alignment.
In this role, you will regularly engage with members of the Energy Transition team, with colleagues in other teams involved in helping to deliver aspects of the Programme, and with peer Programme Managers to promote strategic alignment and cross-team learning. Forming productive internal relationships will be crucial for success; using your skills and experience to manage and coordinate our resources will help to ensure we maximise our impact. In doing so, you will support ShareAction’s progress towards its overall mission of promoting a more responsible investment system as well as achieving our climate campaign objectives.
Your day-to-day responsibilities will be highly varied: one day you could be organising the logistics and agenda for a team planning or evaluation session; the next, developing a budget for a funding proposal; and the next, helping the Programme Lead prepare for an external presentation.
If this role sounds exciting and a good fit with your skill set and experience, we’d love to hear from you!
What you’ll bring to the team
We’re seeking an experienced programme manager who is highly organised, motivated, proactive and efficient. You’ll need excellent interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills to succeed in this lynch-pin role for the smooth running of the programme across all its activities. You’ll also need to be personally aligned with ShareAction’s values and mission. While we hope we’ll find someone with the majority of the skills and experience in the Job Description, we’re keen to hear from you, even if you don’t have them all. We appreciate that lots of skills are transferable and we welcome an open and honest discussion about how we might support you in any areas requiring further development.
We have a formal hybrid working policy in place. Given the central coordination role that this role will play, there is an expectation that you will be able to come into the office at least once a week to attend team meetings (scheduled on Tuesdays) and other meetings, as needed, with internal and external stakeholders.
What we will do for you
We are a fast-paced organisation that has grown substantially over the past few years. We recognise that our people work hard to advocate for responsible investment and drive meaningful engagement with those who have the power to create a brighter future. Every day they bring their expertise, passion and persistence to build a world where the financial system serves our people and planet.
