Job Description

We are looking to recruit a dynamic and experienced Senior Research Manager to manage the monitoring, evaluation and learning activities of a high profile National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) portfolio of translational, clinical and applied health research infrastructure funding schemes. 

Job Purpose 
Reporting to the Assistant Director, the post holder will work closely with the rest of the infrastructure team (especially the Programme Leads and Senior Research Managers who are responsible for the development and management of the infrastructure schemes), and with Data Analytics colleagues (who are responsible for designing systems for capturing, cleaning and presenting data), to manage the infrastructure reporting and evaluation activities. At an award level, you will develop, improve and maintain monitoring and reporting processes, and at a scheme level, you will implement monitoring, evaluation and learning approaches, including overseeing the delivery and/or commissioning of impact evaluations. You will support a wider programme around visibility and the strategic use of data within infrastructure, considering links to policy directives around Busting Bureaucracy, the developing NIHR digital strategy and system operability issues with NHS and University systems. 

You will be adept at dealing with an array of data sources (metrics, narrative and financial reporting information), have a good understanding of research impact, an understanding of the routes to achieving it, and how to apply monitoring, evaluation and learning approaches to generate insight that can evidence impact and support continuous improvement of scheme funding and support processes. You will have experience of managing complex projects, knowledge of the UK’s research environment and political agenda, and honed skills in stakeholder management. You will be a strategic thinker, capable of seeing the issues and solutions from a number of different stakeholder perspectives to see the bigger picture. You will be comfortable dealing with complexity and developing an approach to balance the needs of different stakeholders. You will be a team player, able to work in close partnership with a number of teams at NIHR and the DHSC.

Key Accountabilities:

• Manage elements of the infrastructure monitoring processes: you will manage parts of the infrastructure reporting process both internally at the technical systems level and externally with users to support training and propose improvements. You will work with others to develop new reporting processes (for new awards), maintain existing annual and quarterly reporting, support the review of submitted reports by the team and the production of feedback, and drive process improvements through a continuous improvement cycle.

• Development of reporting outputs: support quantitative and qualitative data interrogation in projects across the infrastructure. Interrogating data to support strategic reviews, and, where feasible and appropriate, designing visual dashboards of progress using data collected and collated for reporting purposes. Also draw on award level reported data to feed into strategic scheme level evaluations and reviews, to produce impact case studies, and to feed into organisational level learning and reporting. This work will help articulate the contribution of the NIHR infrastructure to the wider health and social care system as well as feeding into broader NIHR initiatives such as the NIHR Impact Programme.

• Scheme reviews: support the delivery of scheme mid-term reviews and evaluations, working closely with the infrastructure team’s Senior Research Managers responsible for specific schemes and the central Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning team to design and plan an appropriate review process for individual schemes.

• Stakeholder engagement: through appropriate stakeholder engagement, developing a sound understanding of data needs, minimising additional requirements of key stakeholders and understanding the types of reporting outputs/feedback that would provide the greatest utility for accountability and learning purposes. Proactively share key learnings across the infrastructure team and with wider stakeholder groups as appropriate.

• Flexible support to the team:  flexible approach to work tasks with ability to ‘muck in’ and provide support on additional tasks across the team during busy times.

Line Management:

• The post holder will be responsible for the line management of one Research Manager and will matrix manage other team members, where appropriate.

Qualifications

Experience and Technical Skills

Required Criteria: 

• A PhD degree in biomedical or health sciences research (or significant equivalent sector experience)
• Experience of implementation or management of monitoring, evaluation and learning approaches including impact assessment and reporting, ideally within health and care research
• Data collection, collation and analysis skills using both qualitative and quantitative methodologies
• Current knowledge of the UK’s health and care research and policy landscape
• Strategic thinker able to interpret complex information while having a clear view of the “big picture”
• Solutions orientated with evidence of delivering projects, requiring evidence synthesis, report writing and developing implementable recommendations

Desirable Criteria:

• Specialist training/knowledge in monitoring, evaluation and learning approaches and methods
• Experience of authoring high quality impact reports and case study reports for a variety of technical and general audiences
• Experience of developing electronic dashboards using visualisation tools such as Qlik Sense, Looker Studio or equivalents
• Line management and staff development experience

About the Youth Endowment Fund 

We exist to prevent children and young people becoming involved in violence. We do this by finding out what works and building a movement to put this knowledge into practice.

Last year, 244 people in England and Wales tragically died after being assaulted with a knife. Of these, 32 were children. Every child captured in these numbers is an important member of our community and society has a duty to protect them. Even when violence doesn’t strike directly, we know that the fear of violence has a terrible effect on children’s lives.

At the Youth Endowment Fund, we are working to create lasting change. To succeed, we must build a world-leading body of knowledge on the violence that affects young people and how it can be stopped. This means producing rigorous, relevant evidence — through synthesis, data analysis and in-depth research into young people’s lives. But knowledge alone isn’t enough. We must make it accessible and actionable: showing what works, how services need to change, and how the systems around them must adapt. And we must partner with the people who can make change happen — across policy, practice and local systems — to turn evidence into impact.

About the role

The Research Lead will lead the development of YEF’s research, resources and recommendations in our neighbourhood focus sector.

We focus our efforts on seven essential sectors: education, policing, youth justice, youth sector, children’s services, health, and neighbourhood. “Neighbourhood” refers to our work supporting local partnerships – such as Violence Reduction Units (VRUs), community safety partnerships or the new Prevention Partnerships - and hyper-local approaches like our neighbourhood fund. 

Their primary responsibility will be to develop a series of actionable and evidence-informed guidance and resources for use by local violence prevention partnerships. This will include self-assessment tools for partnerships to assess their effectiveness, tools for understanding the nature of local violence problems and how they could be solved, and resources to support partnerships to identify and safeguard vulnerable children. Creating these resources will require the Research Lead to collect insights and evidence from across YEF’s work and develop YEF positions on fundamental questions about violence prevention. If successful, the Research Lead could have an outsized impact on YEF’s strategy and mission.  

These resources will support YEF colleagues to deliver our new ‘Area Leaders Programme’ (ALP). This is a new programme which you will help form. It helps local multi-agency partnerships to find and implement the best ways to prevent violence. YEF is working directly with partnerships, providing high-quality professional development, tailored advice and support, system mapping, and a national community of practice. The ALP focuses on strengthening five key elements of effective violence reduction:

1. Building strong and accountable partnerships
2. Understanding local patterns of violence
3. Identifying and supporting children most at risk
4. Improving safety in high-risk places
5. Sharing best practice across agencies

Following a pilot in four areas in 2024/25, the programme will expand to 20 more areas over the next two years. This will lay the groundwork for wider national initiatives, such as the Young Futures Prevention Partnerships, and support implementation of the Serious Violence Duty. The Research Lead will develop resources and guidance for the ALP. As the programme is delivered iteratively, they will work closely with YEF programme leads and local partnerships to test, refine, and improve materials before wider rollout.

The Research Lead will be part of YEF’s Research team. The Research team is at the heart of our efforts to learn what works and put it into practice. We do this by developing the YEF’s funding strategy and creating free, highly accessible research summaries and actionable recommendations for policy makers, commissioners and practitioners. We’re a high-performing team which values intellectual rigour and getting to the truth, compassion for children, ambition about what we can achieve and humility about what we know. We love to discuss the latest developments in research methods, but we’re not just interested in research for its own sake. We want research to lead to actual changes in outcomes for children.

Key responsibilities

The Research Lead will develop a portfolio of impactful projects.

· You’ll lead the research team’s work in our local neighbourhoods and partnerships priority sector. You’ll become the YEF’s expert in this area. You’ll make sure we understand the key issues, stay on top of the latest research and are connected to the right people.

· You’ll ensure we produce accessible, evidence-based resources and guidance that local partnerships can use to develop more effective strategies. You’ll work with YEF colleagues to test, refine, and improve materials before wider rollout

· You’ll set the YEF’s research agenda for your sector. You’ll make sure we invest in research that fills important gaps in knowledge and leads to important changes. You’ll ensure that our strategy and decision-making are informed by the best available research. This is a great opportunity to influence large amounts of funding and direct it towards the most impactful projects.

· You’ll develop great relationships with experts and represent YEF in external meetings and events. You’ll promote evidence-based policy and practice by speaking at conferences and events.

· You’ll lead the development of evidence-based recommendations in your focus area. You’ll draw on research and expert insight to identify potential changes to policy and practice. You’ll design and develop innovative and impactful resources which support the application of your recommendations.

· You’ll take on other responsibilities appropriate to your role. This could include leading the publication of YEF’s evaluation reports or writing ad hoc briefings and evidence summaries for the Government and other partners.

About You

You are this sort of person:

· You want to play a significant part in reducing the level of violence affecting young people. You care about having an impact. This might mean you’ve worked directly with young people at risk of becoming involved in crime, for organisations that fund or deliver relevant programmes, or have conducted research on this topic.

· You share our belief that an evidence-based approach is our best hope of preventing violence. You’re fascinated by research, but you’re not just interested in research for its own sake. You want to achieve actual changes in outcomes for children.

· You know a lot about violence prevention, especially local partnerships and structures like VRUs or Community Safety Partnerships. You know the key ideas and debates, recent policy developments and key people. You’re comfortable talking about this topic with experts.  There are many ways to acquire this knowledge. You might have worked in a local authority or local violence prevention organisation, conducted research on them or learnt about them during a degree.

· You’re a confident reader of research and have strong critical appraisal skills. You know when research can be trusted and when it can’t and can confidently articulate your views on the strength of research. You might have gained this expertise through your academic studies, research or professional experience.

· You have at least three years’ experience working in a role that required you to think about research. This could include a range of roles in policy, academia, funding or practice.

· You write in a way that people easily understand. You have that rare skill of writing in plain English. You have experience of translating complex research findings into plain writing that everyone can understand.

· You have excellent project and time management skills. You can work independently, quickly and to a high standard. You have experience of managing contractors or budgets.

· You are good with people. You’re comfortable working with a wide range of people, including senior academics and other research experts, children and their families, practitioners and policy makers. You’re able to provide constructive challenges when required.

· You learn fast but remain humble. You like learning. You’re very good at synthesising information. You know how much you don't know and that you can always learn more.

· You work well in a team. You care more that good things happen than who gets the credit. You support your colleagues to produce excellent work.

What you’ll do

The Research Assistant will support a co-produced project investigating the experiences of neurodiverse individuals in IPT training and supervision. Responsibilities include attending co-production meetings, designing and analysing surveys, recruiting participants, conducting and supporting focus groups and interviews, and contributing to data analysis, interpretation, and reporting. The role also involves producing training resources in collaboration with stakeholders, assisting in statistical and qualitative analysis, and supporting the induction of other research staff.

Candidates should hold a degree in Psychology or a related field with research methods training, and have experience in both quantitative and qualitative research, including data entry and analysis using tools such as Excel, SPSS, or NVivo. Strong communication skills, the ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders, and experience working with or as a neurodivergent individual are essential. Applicants must be organised, capable of working independently, and flexible with working hours to accommodate occasional evening sessions.

What you’ll bring

The ideal candidate for this Research Assistant role is a proactive and collaborative individual with a strong academic background in Psychology or a related field, particularly with experience in research methods.

You will be skilled in both quantitative and qualitative research, comfortable using software such as Excel, SPSS, or NVivo, and capable of managing data collection, analysis, and reporting independently. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential, along with the ability to engage sensitively and effectively with neurodiverse individuals and a range of stakeholders.

You will act as a consultant on a range of different partnerships to help partners develop their evaluation strategy and approach. For example, you could deliver independent evaluations for organisations like the Careers and Enterprise Company, Nesta or multi-academy Trusts such as Lift Schools. You will also have opportunities to contribute to development of team strategy and learning and development resources.

As a manager you will act as a project lead, delivering high-quality research projects at scale, and support the creation of specific deliverables for projects led by others. This covers the end to end of research design and delivery, including the creation of Theories of Change and evaluation frameworks, data collection and analysis, and impact reporting to help our partners learn about the effectiveness of their programmes. At manager level you will have the opportunity to take on larger-scope partnerships supported by a project sponsor at senior manager level or above.

Opportunity 2: Manager - Research Partnerships, ImpactEd Evaluation

The Manager role works across ImpactEd Evaluation but with a specific focus in our TRAPs team (targeted research and action projects). The TRAPs team are responsible for our national research projects, and work with both individual schools and groups of schools to sign them up to research cohorts: ensuring they can both contribute to a national research programme as well as gaining specific insights for their own school improvement journey.

You will act as a lead on a range of different partnerships to help partners develop their strategy and approach. For example, you could lead on the management of a key multi-academy trust, or could be supporting other team members with individual school partnerships, as well as supporting the Associate Director of TRAPs with overall research project design and planning. You will also have opportunities to contribute to development of team strategy and learning and development resources.

As a manager you will work closely with an Associate Director, lead on school group account management and support with the overall running and development of the TRAPs team.

We are open to a range of backgrounds, but would expect prior experience of research and evaluation delivery and partnership management. The Resident Engagement Manager will be the organisational lead in a new and exciting lottery funded project leading a small team and overseeing the design and delivery of the LEAP service at Homeless Oxfordshire and with wider partners.

Some of your responsibilities will include:

• Provide leadership across the organisation on resident engagement, learning and skills, co-production and activities.
• To promote the active involvement of the resident’s experience and voice in the delivery, development and monitoring of LEAP service.
• To provide support and line management supervision to the engagement team, ensuring they meet all aims, objectives and outcomes, according to the lottery bid.
• Lead on monitoring, data collection and impact measures for all resident engagement work.
• Lead on the design of the peer mentoring training and traineeship programmes.
• Develop and maintain key relationships with key stakeholders including education, employment and third sector partners.

LEAP is built on the foundation of strong, supportive relationships that empower residents to move towards stable, independent living. Through one-to-one key worker support, trauma-informed care, and community engagement, residents rebuild trust, form friendships, and gain confidence. Activities like gardening, arts and crafts, and creative writing foster connection and personal growth, while group involvement helps residents feel part of a wider community. Through a wide range of engaging and meaningful activities, residents will experience positive outcomes such as increased confidence, self-esteem, and a sense of inclusion. They will build supportive networks, learn key life skills and access training, volunteering, and employment opportunities. Many will gain qualifications and secure long-term accommodation. The project strengthens peer support and enables residents to shape services through formalised Residents’ Forums, ensuring their voices influence senior decision-making. Our Data Operations Managers have a key role in ensuring our end to end processes are working through our central CRM system. These processes include the processing of our income through the system such as Gift Aid, regular giving and special events, Direct Debits.

This role also ensures our end to end data flows are fit for purpose and that data within it are clean, accessible and available.

This role is responsible for:

• Custodian of our CRM data and responsible for major data import/export into the system including data validation, de-duplication, cleansing and fixing of data throughout the multiple data systems.
• Responsible for the curation and management of import and export routines of key fundraising data using appropriate tools.
• Responsible for forming and managing how the functions work within the Organisation to build key relationships with key data users to ensure data is correctly ingested
• Responsible for defining and setting standards and principles of data use in the system and fully enforcing these principles across the Organisation and to suppliers.
• Maintenance of legacy systems and processes where necessary

Background

Congenital Heart Disease affects 1 in 125 newborn babies, it is the most common condition at birth. Around 17,000 babies, children and adults are treated by the Leeds Congenital Heart Unit (LCHU) every year. The LCHU is the specialist heart centre for all of Yorkshire, The Humber, North East Lincolnshire and North Derbyshire.

Children’s Heart Surgery Fund (CHSF) provide tailored emotional, financial and practical support and essential resources to heart patients and their families. When families need us most, CHSF provide parent accommodation close to the hospital and a dedicated family support service during a child’s treatment. CHSF also provide vital medical equipment and resources to the Leeds Congenital Heart Unit and 19 regional clinics, including start-up NHS staff roles and specialist training across the network.

CHSF is a completely self-funded charity. Together, we are able to nurture a wonderful community of children, young people, adults and their families affected by congenital heart disease to live empowered lives.

Job Summary

As Fundraising Researcher you'll be responsible for proactively researching potential funders including corporate foundations and community funds, charitable trusts and other organisations to support our ambitious fundraising team. Working closely with the Trusts & Foundations Manager and Corporate Partnership Managers you'll ensure fundraising activity is supported across the organisation with robust research.

Role and Responsibilities

1. Research and identify charitable trusts and foundations, corporate, government and other funding opportunities that align with CHSF’s mission, vision and values.

2. Use prospect research tools and techniques to collate detailed prospect information e.g. business insider bulletins, directories, websites, AI etc.

3. Compile key information about each funding opportunity, including deadlines, eligibility criteria, application questions, and funder priorities, in a structured format.

4. Assist in reviewing and prioritising potential funding opportunities based on suitability for CHSF.

5. Support with impact monitoring and reporting to funders and corporate partners, including liaising with staff at the Leeds Congenital Heart Unit to collect information.

6. Organise and archive past grant applications, ensuring a structured and accessible digital filing system.

7. Support the team by keeping funding research up to date and easy to access for future applications.

8. Collaborate with finance/fundraising teams to ensure grant research aligns with fundraising priorities.

9. Work with the Marketing Team to promote funding received to meet the requirements of the funder.

10. Strong understanding of due diligence, data protection and fundraising regulations.
