Role Overview

We are seeking dedicated and compassionate volunteers to join our new monthly drop in group in that take place in Redbridge Sports & Leisure, Forest Road, Barkingside, Ilford Essex, IG63HD, every 3rd Thursday of the month 10.30-12.30 starting on 20th November.

This role is ideal for individuals looking to make a meaningful impact in the community while gaining valuable experience. Is perfect for SLT students, retired health professionals and individuals looking at becoming speech and language therapists.

The Say Aphasia charity provides support groups across the UK for people with aphasia; a language and communication disability caused by a brain injury like a stroke. Aphasia affects over 350,000 people in the UK but is little understood or known about by the public. It is the only aphasia charity set up by people with aphasia for people with aphasia; helping them to adapt to their new way of life and regain their independence and confidence.

Aphasia occurs due to injury to the brain such as a stroke. It affects access to language, resulting in difficulties following conversations, speaking, reading and writing.

Volunteers will support the running of the group with communicating, and will have the opportunity to utilise their communication skills and IT knowledge to take a register of attendance.

Responsibilities

• Provide companionship and support to individuals, particularly those living with asphasia.
• Assist in organising activities that promote social interaction and engagement.
• Communicate effectively with participants, ensuring their needs are understood and met.
• Help maintain a safe and welcoming environment for all participants.
• Collaborate with other volunteers to enhance the group.

Qualifications

• An understanding or knowledge in aphasia is desirable but not essential (training will be given)
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse groups.
• Proficiency in IT, including familiarity with common software applications.
• A compassionate and patient attitude towards individuals in need of support.

This volunteer position offers a rewarding opportunity to contribute positively to the lives of others while developing personal skills and experiences.

• Providing potential adopters with basic cat care information
• Completing homing questionnaires with potential adopters ‘virtually’, as well as face to face, which may involve visiting the homes of potential adopters
• Carrying out follow up communications if required
• Using online map searches to match cats and kittens to new homes

Time expectation

Our cat match volunteers usually spend 2 to 3 hours a week in this role which is flexible and can be shared by more than one volunteer if needed.

About us

We are the Global Network of Civil Society Organisations for Disaster Reduction (GNDR),  the largest global network of civil society organisations working to strengthen the resilience of people most at risk from disasters and climate change. With two trustees nearing the end of their terms, we are now recruiting two new trustees to join our Board at an exciting moment as we prepare to launch our 2026–2030 global strategy.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic oversight and support effective governance
• Ensure compliance with charity law and good governance practice
• Oversee financial sustainability, risk management, and organisational performance
• Support and challenge the Executive Director and Senior Leadership Team
• Champion equity, inclusion, localisation, and community‑led action
• Act as an ambassador for GNDR’s mission and values

What we’re looking for

We are looking for individuals who can bring strategic insight, sound judgement, and a commitment to equity and localisation. While all trustees share collective responsibility for GNDR’s governance, we are specifically seeking two candidates with the following professional expertise to strengthen the Board’s capacity in these areas:

• Professional expertise in Finance (e.g., financial management, audit, budgeting, risk)
• Professional expertise in Human Resources (e.g., people & culture, organisational development, HR policy)

All trustees are expected to uphold the following core criteria:

• Commitment to GNDR’s mission, values, and global network
• Strategic thinking, independent judgement, and collaborative working
• Strong communication skills and willingness to contribute actively
• Understanding of (or willingness to learn about) the responsibilities of charity trusteeship

Trustees must be eligible under UK charity law to serve as charity trustees and company directors.

Terms of office

• Voluntary, unpaid role with all reasonable expenses reimbursed
• Three‑year term, renewable by Board agreement
• Approx. six days per year, plus preparation time, including quarterly board meetings, global board meetings, training, and occasional events
• Trustee indemnity insurance provided

To guide Hackney CVS through a new chapter, we are looking to strengthen our Board with individuals who bring professional and lived experience.

Who we're looking for

We are looking for our next Treasurer, and trustees to join our Finance, Audit and Risk Sub-Committee, with experience in strategic financial management, liaising with external investment managers and an understanding of investment policies and practice. Expertise in charity finance including understanding of Charities Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) is also preferable.

Additionally, we are looking for individuals with expertise in change management, people and culture, ideally with experience in purpose-driven organisations.

We're keen to hear from both experienced trustees, and those without previous trustee experience interested in the opportunity to learn and develop.

We strongly encourage applications from local residents, and individuals with lived experience of the specific challenges and opportunities in Hackney and the City of London, and those representing the diverse communities we serve.

Key accountabilities

All trustees are accountable to the Co-Chairs of the Board.

Their role is to:

• Ensure that the organisation pursues its stated objects (purposes), as defined in its governing document, by developing and agreeing a long-term strategy

• Ensure that the organisation complies with its governing document, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations

• Ensure that the organisation applies its resources exclusively in pursuit of its charitable objects

• Ensure that the organisation defines its goals and evaluates performance against agreed targets • Safeguard the good name and values of the organisation

• Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation, including having appropriate policies and procedures in place

• Ensure the financial stability of the organisation

• Protect and manage the property of the charity and ensuring the proper investment of the charity’s funds

• Follow proper and formal arrangements for the appointment, supervision, support, appraisal and remuneration of the Chief Executive

In addition, trustees may take on specific responsibilities through our sub-committees or task and finish groups. Trustees may also lead for the board on significant projects or pieces of work to provide oversight and challenge.
