Volunteers are essential to Shannon Trust and bring their energy, ideas and skills to train mentors in prisons, support learners in the community and enhance our business support team.

We are looking for volunteers to provide training and support to our mentors in prison in the North East area. This could include visiting any of the following prisons: HMP Frankland, HMP Holme House, HMP Durham, HMP Northumberland, HMP Low Newton, HMP Deerbolt. There may be some additional preparation and/ or administrative tasks in between volunteering days at the prison.

Our prison volunteers nurture the growth of the Shannon Trust in their prison. They help unlock the power of reading by delivering training sessions for prison mentors and offering ongoing advice, guidance and support through mentor meetings.

Volunteer recruitment dates

The closing date for applications to attend our next round of training is 24 January 2027. In some circumstances, volunteer vacancies may close early. Successful applicants will be sent interview questions in advance with notice to prepare. We will respond to all applications. Successful applicants will be invited to an interview between 25 January and 5 February 2027. This is an opportunity for you to meet our regional team, to find out more about you and for us to share more information about the volunteering role.

Training:

You'll be given high quality training to prepare you for volunteering with Shannon Trust. This takes place over 4 training sessions and via our online training portal. We ask that volunteers aim to complete the training in one course as this means that you will be ready to start actively volunteering. The next training sessions for volunteering for people applying to be a prison based volunteer will take place as follows.

About the role

As a Childcare Volunteer, you will work alongside experienced local staff in a childcare centre, supporting children's learning, development and wellbeing. No two days are the same. You will build relationships with the children, assist with educational and recreational activities and help create a fun, safe and engaging environment where children can flourish.

• Manage and respond to wellbeing queries via the designated inbox, including triage and signposting.

We are seeking a candidate who combines professional insight, good judgement and a genuine enthusiasm for the Cathedral’s mission. You will bring an external perspective that helps Chapter think about options for investing in and divesting of property assets, as well as up to date knowledge of good practice in property management.  As a trusted adviser, you will help shape the Cathedral’s strategy for growth, sustainability and public engagement and the role of our property portfolio and Cathedral building in underpinning that strategy.

You will play an active role in helping Chapter develop an appropriate strategy to direct future investment in our properties and their ongoing maintenance.  This will include giving consideration, inter alia, to financial constraints, risks and Chapter’s role as a landlord and the custodian of a grade 1 listed building.

Southwark Cathedral is seeking a new Lay Member of Chapter and Charity Trustee with experience in fundraising, partnership development or income generation.

We are seeking a candidate who combines professional insight, good judgement and a genuine enthusiasm for the Cathedral’s mission.  You will bring an external perspective that helps the Chapter think expansively about its role in the wider world – strengthening connections with external stakeholders.  As a trusted adviser and advocate, you will help shape the Cathedral’s strategy for growth, sustainability, and public engagement, while contributing to its life as a place of Christian worship and service.

You will play an active role in helping Chapter be outward facing, exploring opportunities for income generation, philanthropy and collaboration. This will include guiding the Cathedral’s fundraising strategy, helping identify and engage potential supporters, and acting as a bridge to networks across sectors such as business, other charities, culture, education and social impact.

Purpose of the Role:

Support the delivery of engaging and practical IT sessions at the Baytree Centre, helping adult participants gain confidence in using laptops, smartphones, and other digital tools for everyday tasks. By offering guidance, encouragement, and a welcoming environment, the role empowers participants to enhance their digital skills and navigate technology with ease.

Main Responsibilities:

- Provide one-to-one support to participants, helping them with basic laptop and smartphone functions.

- Ensure all materials and resources are available and organised for each session.

- Create a supportive and inclusive environment where participants feel comfortable learning and asking questions.

- Encourage participants to engage with each other, sharing tips and experiences.

- Collect feedback from participants to help improve future sessions.

Your Role as a Mentor

As a mentor, you will hold weekly one-on-one sessions of 1-3 hours for the duration of 12 months. You will help build confidence, resilience, and help your mentee manage feelings through a series of fun experiences and activities. JOB DESCRIPTION

The National Institute for African Studies (NIAS) is a London-based think tank that provides objective information on African affairs, looking to appoint a Research & Publishing Intern within its office in South West, London. Our main publication, The Saharan is an interdisciplinary journal published by NIAS aimed at exploring the dynamic relationship between culture and development in Africa/UK.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

- Support the editors in the sourcing & production of blog and journal publications

- Checking material for completeness, copy-edit and check appropriate non-technical material such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter updates

- Generate, check and correct files with names, contact information, number of articles, review assessments, and consent forms.

- Serve as a custodian of approved originals of all documentation produced for The Saharan journal

- Use NIAS LinkedIn account to connect to academics and groups to promote the journal, acquire papers, and attract skilled scholars to become reviewers

- Coordinate the publication flow of the journal and all stages of the editorial processes upon the release of each issue

- Review and adjust publications according to the style of the journal, ensuring the correct usage of references and plagiarism checking

- Update wordpress website and a range of social media accounts with news, updates and promotions

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE MUST:

- Have a minimum of undergraduate degree

- Excellent knowledge of MS Office applications

- Good knowledge of wordpress, crm, social media tools

- Demonstrate excellent editorial and administrative skills together with high attention to detail

- Ability to work under pressure to tight schedules and deadlines

The position is based in London, UK. Only candidates who already possess the right to work in the UK should apply. The contract is for three months with a probation period of six weeks, extendable upon agreement and contingent on a continued volunteer/paid position.
