Role – Community Engagement Volunteer
Are you passionate about supporting the Armed Forces Community? Could you help to raise awareness for SSAFA in your local area? You don’t need a military background, just the ability to get on with all kinds of people and some occasional free time.
What is a Community Engagement Volunteer?
As a community engagement volunteer, you and your fellow branch members will create a range of activities to help spread the word about SSAFA within your community. We want to ensure that our Armed Forces community knows that SSAFA is here to help and that we need the public’s support to continue offering our services.
Why do we need you?
We’ve been supporting the Armed Forces community since 1885. Our clients come from all backgrounds and age groups and may have served in WW2 or in a more recent conflict like the Falklands or Afghanistan.
There are SSAFA branches throughout the UK and overseas who support local volunteers to deliver services to veterans, serving personnel and their families.
A varied programme of awareness raising also keeps the SSAFA profile high in the local community, so everyone knows who we are and how we can help.
When would you be needed and where would you be based?
This role is diverse and allows for you to focus on the areas that you have skills or interests in. The role has flexibility and can work around your other commitments.

What training and support would you receive?
• Role specific training to prepare you for your voluntary role
• Mandatory on-line training modules to complete at home, so you are up to date on how to keep
clients, their families safe and personal information safe.
• Access to a range of e-learning courses and marketing materials.
• Access to support from across SSAFA.
• Reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses.
• Volunteers will be covered by SSAFAs Public Liability Insurance whilst carrying out the role.

CHARITY SHOP VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – CUSTOMER SERVICE - HASTINGS
We currently need volunteers for Tuesday and Saturday afternoons, Wednesdays & Friday mornings and all day Sundays.

PURPOSE
To assist the Shop Manger in the running of an Age UK East Sussex Charity Shop with a focus on serving customers, driving sales and store presentation
ROLE OF THE VOLUNTEER
· Greet and thank customers in a polite and friendly manner
· Assist customers in choosing items and actively promote sales
· Replenish and display stock in the shop throughout the day
· Receive donations and complete Gift Aid paperwork
· Handle cash and operate the till following correct procedure
· Take credit card payments using the Streamline system
· Assist in keeping the shop clean and tidy following the cleaning rota
· Undertake other tasks as required by the Shop Manager
SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES NEEDED
· Great communication and interpersonal skills
· A pleasant and friendly manner
· Basic numeracy skills
· An eye for detail
· Enjoy working as part of a team
· Trustworthy and reliable
AS A VOLUNTEER WE WOULD ASK YOU TO
· Support the Mission and Vision of Age UK East Sussex by helping us to ensure that our county is a place where people in later life flourish
· Be available to volunteer for at least one regular shift each week. This could be a morning, afternoon or whole day. Depending on the store we open Monday – Sunday.
· Adhere to Age UK East Sussex confidentiality and equal opportunities policies maintaining discretion and confidentiality at all times
· Be reliable and conscientious
· Attend all training and information days, group meetings and supervision
· Exercise patience and understanding when dealing with customers

We are a 100% volunteer‑led organisation supporting adults aged 18–67 who face barriers to employment, education, confidence, and wellbeing. Our programmes are trauma‑informed, community‑based, and rooted in human connection.

What You’ll Do
As our Learning & Development Manager, you will:

Design and deliver induction training for all new volunteers

Create ongoing learning pathways for facilitators, mentors, wellbeing volunteers, and operational teams

Embed trauma‑informed, person‑centred practice across all training materials

Develop simple, accessible resources, guides, and toolkits to support high‑quality delivery

Work closely with the Head of People, Culture & Talent and Head of Service Delivery to identify training needs

Facilitate reflective practice sessions, debriefs, and skills‑building workshops

Ensure volunteers feel confident, supported, and equipped to deliver safe, impactful sessions

Help build a culture of continuous learning, care, and community

VOLUNTEER ROLE DESCRIPTION
PURPOSE
To assist the Shop Manger in the running of an Age UK East Sussex Charity Shop with a focus on sorting and preparing donated goods
ROLE OF THE VOLUNTEER
· Greet and assist customers in a polite and friendly manner
· Receive donations and complete Gift Aid paperwork
· Sort donations for resale, recycling or rubbish
· Label and price goods, referring to the internet for specific price guides if required
· Steam and hang clothing
· Replenish and display stock in the shop throughout the day
· Assist in keeping the shop clean and tidy following the cleaning rota
· Undertake other tasks as required by the Shop Manager
SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES NEEDED
· Basic numeracy and literacy skills
· IT and internet skills
· Tidy and organised
· Enjoys working as part of a team
· Trustworthy and reliable
· Specialist in an area, i.e. fashion, books etc – desired but not essential
AS A VOLUNTEER WE WOULD ASK YOU TO
· Support the Mission and Vision of Age UK East Sussex by helping us to ensure that our county is a place where people in later life flourish
· Be available to volunteer for at least one regular shift each week. This could be a morning, afternoon or whole day. Depending on the store we open Monday – Sunday.
· Adhere to Age UK East Sussex confidentiality and equal opportunities policies maintaining discretion and confidentiality at all times
· Be reliable and conscientious
· Attend all training and information days, group meetings and supervision
· Exercise patience and understanding when dealing with customers

About BD4 Community Trust
Supporting and Restoring Community across the Generations. BD4 Community Trust is a local charity committed to improving the lives of individuals and families in the BD4 area. We provide a range of services, including support for vulnerable groups, community events, educational programmes, and initiatives to tackle social isolation and disadvantage. Our mission is to create a thriving, inclusive, and resilient community for all.
Our BD4 Family project works to help families to come together to learn, share and grow, where they can feel safe to enjoy quality time together and access encouragement and support when needed. The groups we run support the needs of our ever-expanding community by really listening to families and encouraging them to be part of our decision making and offering opportunities to volunteer and get involved.
Gems has been running since 1983 and works with the older members of our community delivering a variety of activities each week with additional activities at times throughout the year. The project provides opportunities for older people to make friends, participate in healthy activities, enjoy a nutritional meal, and enjoy the occasional day trip out.
Role of a Trustee
As a trustee, you will:
- Contribute to the strategic direction of the charity.
- Ensure that BD4 Community Trust remains financially sustainable.
- Provide support and oversight to the charity’s staff and volunteers.
- Help build partnerships with other community organisations, local authorities, and stakeholders.
- Ensure that the charity complies with all legal and regulatory requirements.
- Bring your skills, experience, and enthusiasm to help us grow and achieve our mission.
Who We're Looking For
We are seeking individuals with a variety of skills and experiences, including (but not limited to):
- Leadership and governance experience.
- Knowledge of community development or charitable work.
- Financial or legal expertise.
- Strong communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Passion for improving the lives of those in the BD4 community.

Time Commitment
