ROLE SUMMARY
The Head of Fundraising & Events will contribute to the growth of upReach through the raising of significant funds; you will have oversight of income generation from various sources including major donors, individuals, trusts & foundations and a portfolio of events. The role will suit innovative individuals with significant experience of fundraising from major donors and at least one of the other specified income streams, and event planning.
You will represent upReach externally, advocating our work and building strategic relationships across our markets. You will be accountable for agreed income targets, developing the fundraising strategy and identifying new opportunities.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
The Head of Fundraising & Events will support upReach's mission by meeting financial targets, recognising when to make the fundraising ‘ask’ and leading the annual budget process. You will use clear, creative written communication to produce convincing cases for support, represent the charity at relevant networking events, work closely with the upReach Development Board and act as an ambassador for the organisation.
Reporting to the Director of Income Generation and External Engagement you will manage three direct reports and support individuals participating in the Future Charity Leaders Programme (upReach’s graduate scheme). You will work closely with the CEO, Programmes and Finance teams and colleagues across the income generating and external engagement team.
The core responsibilities include:
Leadership and strategy

Lead income generation to realise financial targets in line with the overarching strategy, personal responsibility for securing 5 and 6 figure gifts.

Provide leadership and inspire staff and volunteers to excel and achieve, champion the upReach values and defined Leadership qualities.

Commit to the annual appraisal process, including deadlines and develop stretching, SMART OKRs (objectives and key results) to meet our strategic goals.

Deputise for the Director in their absence and play an active role in the Leadership team.

Lead the strategic and operational planning process for the functional areas of responsibility and ensure the involvement of relevant stakeholders.

Keep abreast of developments, changes in trends and patterns, new techniques and legislation. Take responsibility for own professional development.

Ensure planned activity is delivered in compliance with relevant charity law, other legislation, best practice and corporate policy.

Act as a senior sounding board to ensure strategic decisions regarding donors and funders resonate with our objectives and mission.

Contribute to strategic thinking including risk management and mitigation.

Collate and present timely monthly management reports for each income stream.

Lead the annual budget and financial forecasting processes to facilitate reporting and strategic-decision making.
Working with stakeholders (internal and external)

Collaborate with colleagues in the income generation and external engagement team to identify and secure all various income generating and profile raising opportunities, ensuring maximum impact and contribution from funders.

Lead, champion and model a culture of outstanding donor stewardship and supporter care; including best practice and behaviour.

Develop and foster effective relationships with key external contacts at all levels, e.g. donors, supporters, suppliers.

Make the fundraising ‘ask’ as and when appropriate, or support others to do so.

Respond promptly to requests for information and action from supporters.

Report and disseminate the key issues to emerge from supporter feedback.

Manage the complaints procedures for the department and conduct full investigation of all complaints received by the department.
Developing, maintaining systems and procedures

Determine and manage the operating systems needed to deliver activity and enable effective donor, supporter and volunteer relationship management.

Effectively develop the donor journey.

Ensure records in the CRM are up to date.

Conduct analysis of data from across functions responsible for, drawing conclusions, making recommendations to the Director.

Ensure the management of systems and processes comply with the organisation’s data protection obligations, charity law and other legal requirements.
People Management and Team Working

Recruit and lead the Fundraising & Events team, rotatees and volunteers as required.

Major Donors and Individuals

Develop and implement fundraising strategies to grow income.

Nurture relationships with donors including high net worth individuals maintaining the highest level of donor care.

Research, identify and engage prospective donors to secure 5 and 6 figure gifts.

Lead the team on increasing donors numbers and gift income.

Develop a legacies strategy and oversee delivery of awareness campaign.
Events
-
Oversee the delivery of a sector leading events portfolio, achieving 5 and 6 figure income targets and building a pipeline of future activity.

Lead the team on the delivery of multiple and complex events and activities at the same time including the Student Social Mobility Awards (SSMA’s).

Engage, steward and motivate key stakeholders including the Development Board, potential event committee members and other high value volunteers to grow our network and deliver successful fundraising events.
Trusts, Foundations & Corporates

Oversight of Trusts, Foundation & Corporate fundraising strategy.

Work with the Senior Fundraising Manager to identify and build relationships with Companies, Trusts and Foundations which are mission and/or programme aligned.

Support the acquisition of new, multi year funders and existing donors.

About this key role
Reporting to the CFO Evolution Team Leader, our successful candidate will provide ongoing resettlement support needs and deliver high-quality, engaging group sessions to your assigned participants, while also monitoring and reviewing each individual’s progress to ensure high attendance, achievement rates and progression. What you will be doing as a Senior Trust Fundraiser:
- You will proactively and strategically develop national and regional funding bids, leading Kids relationships with a varied portfolio of funders.
- You will create and coordinate cross organisational project development groups and manage diverse priorities and input to craft national fundable projects that support the organisational strategies.
- You will build on relationships with existing supporters, working with service delivery staff to evidence impact in narrative and quantitative reports on funded projects and developing strategic applications to secure further support.

Personal qualities / experience required for the role of Senior Trust Fundraiser:
- You will have a minimum of two years’ experience as a trust fundraiser and a strong understanding of the sector
- You will have excellent written communication skills and the ability to craft coherent and compelling cases for support based on varied and complex information
- You will have an understanding of budgets and feel comfortable fielding questions about charity finances
- You will be confident in managing stakeholder relationships with a varied audience and have the ability to be responsive to different communication preferences and expectations
- You will have excellent interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills plus the ability to correspond with external and internal audiences
- Experience of using Microsoft, Excel and PowerPoint

The Senior Fundraising Officer will play a key role in the Fundraising Team helping to generate significant and increased income from charitable trusts and foundations and corporate partners.
The role will be responsible for ensuring a regular pipeline of new and existing income from both areas and ensuring partners are stewarded appropriately to maximise engagement with the charity’s aims and objectives.
The post holder will:
- Identify, research and develop new trusts and foundations leads.
- Proactively oversee and grow relationships with trusts and foundations that give four and five figure grants, identifying opportunities to strengthen relationships utilising meetings, project visits, informal updates and monitoring and reporting as appropriate.
- Produce formal reports to funders regularly as directed by grant giving bodies.

The National House Project (NHP) takes a ground-breaking approach through its commitment to young people’s ownership to enable young people leaving care to lead connected and fulfilling lives. The approach was co-designed with young people from the start and works on cooperative and social pedagogical principles through a groupwork approach which is supported by adults and young people in and leaving care working together. Using a psychologically informed relational practice framework young people gain skills, knowledge and the confidence to make their house a home and build a long-term community of support.
NHP supports Local House Projects (LHP) to put young people at the centre of the decision-making processes, challenges staff to work with them in an inclusive way and encourages staff to support young people to find the solutions to the challenges they face. LHP achieve improved outcomes for young people, supports professionals in the ways that they work with young people and enable young people to leave care in a supported and ‘less scary’ way.
To ensure that young people are involved at every level of the organisation, each LHP is represented by 2 young people at regional meetings and from these forums, young people elect their representatives for Care Leavers National Movement. CLNM provides a forum to develop practice, share ideas and find solutions to challenges. The Chair and Vice Chair of CLNM are supported by CLNM Champions and sit on the Board of Trustees as expert advisors.
To support the expansion of the Charity we have increased our strategic capacity by creating the post of Deputy Director and are now recruiting to the practice lead roles. We are looking for someone who is motivated, believes that with the right support care experienced young people can achieve great things and should be at the heart of any decision that affects their future. You will support staff in LHPs to create an environment where young people transition to adulthood in a positive and supported way and hence an understanding of child development, social pedagogical approaches and psychologically informed care are important. You will also work with the CLNM as well as the core NHP team to ensure that young people continue to drive the approach at both a local and national level.
You will need to have management or supervisory experience of staff working with young people in groupwork settings and an understanding of the care system. - Identify potential funders relevant to area and contribute to writing business plans demonstrating a seamless relationship between content, programmes, events, audiences, and the core business activities
- Support the work of the Director of Development Team in developing and delivering the fundraising strategy and the Director of Finance & Operations on delivering TAC financial plans
Governance & Compliance
- Write reports for the board as and when required by the CEO in a timely and appropriate manner
- Work with the Director of Finance & Ops to ensure the financial health and sustainability of the charity in delegated budget area(s), adhere to TAC Financial Regulations and Procurement Policy.
- Ensure that all artist contracting is undertaken within TAC procurements and contracting policies observing all other required policies and statutory guidelines e.g., Equalities, Safeguarding, Health and Safety, Intellectual Property, GDPR, Finance and Procurements etc.
- Maintain accurate records on The Africa Centre’s document management system and databases.
- Respond to general enquiries by email or telephone, manage own workload and maintain an online diary, using agreed TAC systems.
- To promote and comply with current legislation including The Africa Centre policies on Equality and Diversity and Health & Safety, Safeguarding, in the delivery of services and the
- Uphold the TAC brand and reputation
Leadership
- Be a vital, collegiate member of the TAC Senior leadership team,
- Develop and nurture relationships with the TAC Board, managing relevant committees and reporting to the Board and sub-committees as required.
- Represent the organisation at appropriate internal and external events and meetings, locally, regionally and globally.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Essential
- A clearly-evidenced long-standing passion for Africa and people of African Descent
- 3 - 5 years working at a senior level in a similar role
- Excellent Programme Management experience with excellent budget management skills
- Excellent communication and networking skills, adept at effectively engaging people across a range of settings – from school children to Prime Ministers and Presidents;
- Educated to degree level of equivalent (relevant subject area)
- Team player, able to work cross disciplinary with artists, experts, academics, key stakeholders, and audiences in a programming function working with diverse audiences
- Specialist knowledge of audience development gained through 3 years’ experience
- Agile approach to work, recognising the limitations and challenges of running a small charitable organisation and willingness to work flexibly to get things done, apply effort and integrity at all times. Regular weekend and evening work will be required.
- Experience of working with an operations team to deliver events (production, tech requirements, artist management)
- Experience of delivering to funder obligations (Trusts and Foundations/Public and Private Funding) • Excellent network in publishing; cultural and creative sector; or other relevant sectors
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Docs, et al.
Desirable
- Understanding and experience of digital content production
- Masters level qualification or equivalent
- Awareness of how to use emerging technologies including AI to develop impactful programming and engagement.
- Experience of working within a grant management organisation.
- Experience of positive action activity to deliver inclusive Programmes (equalities, diversity, inclusion, and access)
Work Arrangements
Location: The Africa Centre office, London. Occasional remote working is encouraged. The post-holder will be required to be on location in London for relevant activities. Some international travel will be required.

Responsible for: Programme Managers (x 2 - 3), freelance workers, volunteers
Hours of work: Full time. 35 hours per week. The post holder will be expected to be flexible and there will be requirements to work such days and hours that may vary in accordance with business requirements, including regular evenings and weekends and occasional holiday periods.
Holidays: 25 days per year, plus Christmas shutdown (3 days) and public holidays
