About the Role​

RUSI’s Terrorism and Conflict team is looking to recruit an expert in the field of terrorism to provide maternity cover for the research group starting from July. The successful candidate will be a self-starter who can generate funding and lead the team’s diverse work portfolio, while reporting directly to RUSI’s Deputy Director‑General.

​

We are particularly interested in candidates with an interest in developing funded research projects in the following areas:

• The intersection between violent extremism and conflict including integrated P/CVE responses.
• State threats and social extremism including misinformation and disinformation.
• International terrorism related to jihadi groups, the transnational far right and other relevant groups, networks and movements.

​

These areas will complement the team’s existing portfolio of work on CT and P/CVE, which includes research, policy advice, training and implementation. We work in the UK, Europe and a number of global ‘hotspots,’ including East and West Africa, Central and South Asia and the Balkans. We also run an active training programme on CT and CVE for diplomatic, development and civil society representatives.​

Our team encompasses 12 staff in London, Brussels and Nairobi and we work closely with an extensive range of consultants and associate fellows from the academic, diplomatic, development and practitioner worlds in the UK and internationally.

RUSI wishes to appoint an acting Research Director on a one-year fixed term contract to provide maternity cover for the Terrorism and Conflict Research Group. This could lead to a permanent research position if funding in the areas outlined above is secured during the year.

The role offers an exceptional opportunity for an individual with at least ten years of experience in the field of terrorism as a researcher, policymaker or practitioner. It is essential that the successful candidate has a strong track record of business development and of securing significant funding. The role involves significant management responsibility including oversight of RUSI’s office in Nairobi and management of T&C’s team in RUSI Europe. We are therefore particularly interested in candidates with significant management experience.

Duties and Responsibilities ​

The​Director will report to the Deputy Director-General, and will​be responsible for the following: 

​

1. Management responsibilities: much of the role is focused on management-related activities including management of the team’s portfolio of work and income and responsibility for meeting financial budgets set by RUSI; line management of staff in London, Brussels and Nairobi, management of the RUSI Nairobi Office and a role in managing RUSI Europe as a board member; and other management related responsibilities where relevant.
    
2. Business development and fundraising: All T&C’s work is project funded. Business development is the top priority for the year in line with the topics identified. The requirement will be to develop concepts for new research projects; identify potential customers, stakeholders and sources of funding; write applications/proposals for research funding; and develop a network of potential funders and beneficiaries.
    
3. Team development: responsibility for developing the capacity and expertise of all team members, particularly junior researchers, to improve their knowledge base and develop their skills in designing and writing research proposals; overseeing and implementing research projects; research skills; academic and policy writing; public speaking; and event organisation.
    
4. Conducting research on terrorism and counter-terrorism: conducting primary and secondary research on terrorism for a range of customers/clients in the UK and overseas; writing and communicating research outputs (published papers, analytical reports, commentaries, conference papers, presentations etc.); editing, supervising and quality control of the outputs of other researchers (within RUSI and/or partner organisations); projecting RUSI’s research in academia, government, industry, and in the media (print, broadcast, social media).
    
5. Project management: ensuring that research projects are run effectively and efficiently and achieve their desired outcomes; conducting project risk assessments; liaising with beneficiaries, partners and funders; supervising the organisation of events and publications.
    
6. Developing skills; expertise and profile: maintaining and developing knowledge in relation to the evolving field of terrorism and CT; and developing a network of CT experts.

Essential

​The chosen candidate will be expected to demonstrate the following:

• Evidenced and nationally recognised expertise in terrorism, and at least 10 years of demonstrated experience working on these topics in a research, practitioner, or policy role.
• Demonstrated ability and track record in winning and delivering major projects in the UK and/or internationally, with the ability to lead major research project bids and identify new funding opportunities for RUSI.
• At least 5 years’ experience leading and managing diverse teams and budgets.
• Demonstrated experience developing and implementing research projects with robust monitoring, reporting, evaluation and learning frameworks and demonstrated applied risk management experience.
• Demonstrated experience of working with governments or multilaterals in one of the following fields: civil service, advocacy, think tanks, the private sector or academia.
• Ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders from a variety of professional and cultural backgrounds and with broad variations in seniority and function.
• Excellent analytical and methodological skills, and an organised approach to research.
• Willingness and ability to contribute to the public understanding of your field, including through media engagements, and ability to present complex issues in an engaging and clear way.
• Well-developed interpersonal skills and an existing network of key stakeholders in the field of terrorism.

About Black Thrive 

Black Thrive Global (BTG) evolved from the work of the Black Thrive Lambeth (BTL) Partnership, which was established in 2016. We exist to address the inequalities that negatively impact the mental health and wellbeing of Black people so that the thriving of Black communities is the norm. 

Our guiding principle is that Black communities should be at the forefront of reimagining, redefining, and co-creating a society where systemic racism and other oppressive systems have been dismantled so that they have fulfilling lives. We have two priorities – building a Black Thrive Research Institute and embedding race equity in systems change. 

We have grown rapidly since 2021 and so still have a start-up culture and often deal with competing priorities at a fast pace. 

The aim of Black Queer & Thriving is to explore the health and wellbeing needs of Black LGBTQ+ people in Lambeth and Southwark, develop community research that details these needs with the Working Group and use the outcome to influence local policy and infrastructure. 

The purpose of this role is to support the Black Queer & Thriving workstream with the main priorities being: 

• Providing administrative support to the development of the Black LGBTQ+ Working Group, including organising meetings and minute taking; 

• Supporting relationship management with Lambeth and Southwark’s Black LGBTQ+ community; and 

• Leading on a community research project exploring the health and wellbeing experiences of Black LGBTQ+ people in Lambeth and Southwark.

Duties and responsibilities 

1. Support the project’s engagement and involvement with Lambeth and Southwark’s Black LGBTQ+ communities, particularly young people. 

2. Lead on designing and maintaining databases to support the network mapping of stakeholders and ensure relationship management of key stakeholders. 

3. Leading on a community research project with the Working Group and participate in and support other research, evaluation and learning activities. 

4. Keep abreast of various projects, initiatives and coalitions locally, regionally and nationally, as well as emerging legislation policy and practice related to the workstream.

6. Organise meeting and events and manage the associated administration such as room bookings, preparing and distribution of agendas, minute taking and action tracking. 

7. Support the development of the Black LGBTQ+ Working Group, including recruitment, organising meetings and minutes.

Purpose of the role

This role will provide oversight, coordinate and manage  the editorial process of publishing Field Exchange that includes tracking ideas, soliciting and securing submissions of Field Exchange content, critically appraising potential content, discussing, brokering and supporting content development with authors, coordinating input from the Field Exchange Editorial Team, liaising with copy editors and designers and ensuring content deadlines are scheduled and are adhered to, as well as ensuring quality, relevant and timely curated content is produced and disseminated. This position will also take a lead role in implementing the Field Exchange Strategy 2024-2029.

Key Responsibilities

Content development

• Actively seek opportunities for FEX content across a broad range of technical areas, leveraging and developing internal and external contacts and networks.
• Seek and secure a spectrum of contributors, prioritising country stakeholder lead and co-authorship. And including Francophone representation (in collaboration with FEX francophone lead).
• Communicate with potential authors to explore opportunities for content and provide support and guidance in development of articles (structure, writing and technical content).
• Edit articles to address structure, flow and language.
• Appraise articles for rigour and validity. Pose technical questions to authors to clarify, substantiate, elaborate and prompt deeper reflection and learning.
• Identify need for and coordinate internal or external peer review for prospective articles.

• Collate themes and key messages across all articles for editors and work with them to produce editorials and technical briefs.

Dissemination of FEX content

• In collaboration with the ENN communications lead:
  • Develop podcasts and soundbites, developing questions for author interview podcasts in collaboration with authors.
  • Proactively seek blog content from authors, leading its content development, review and finalisation.
  • Contribute to development of a communications plan for each FEX issue in order to disseminate content optimally.
  • Curate and initiate development of FEX website content, identifying areas for development.
• Represent ENN at events including conferences, webinars etc. to promote and disseminate FEX, including development of FEX materials such as leaflets, videos etc. where required.

FEX strategy implementation

• Take the lead in the implementation of the FEX strategy 2024-2029, such as by:
  • Making smaller adjustments to the FEX process as identified.
  • Coordinating larger pieces of prioritised work, for example by:
    • Building the capacity of authors through a more comprehensive approach.
    • Expanding our reach to younger audiences.
    • Engaging with academic institutions in more resource-poor settings.
• Mobilise resources for FEX through engagement with donors and other FEX contributors through identifying potential sources of funding, engaging with donors and ‘selling’ FEX, and writing proposals to secure funding.

 Internal project content coordination

• Coordinate, manage and track development of all articles and issues from submission to publication against deadlines, ensuring donor requirements are met.
• Communicate with all authors, FEX team members and external consultants to facilitate the development of every article and issue, as well as other outputs such as technical briefs. 
• Collate and review submissions, potential papers for summarising and other opportunities, and solicit necessary and timely editorial review and final decisions.
• Initiate regular meetings and other communications with the FEX editors to provide feedback on progress, explore opportunities, and make decisions about submissions, content to summarise, delegation of tasks and timelines and input into strategic discussions about future content/issues.
• Lead regular meetings with wider FEX team (editors, sub-editors, operations team, communications team, copy editor, designer) for feedback on progress, agreement on timelines, to brainstorm ideas and delegate tasks.

Terms and Conditions

Essential requirements

• Master’s degree in nutrition or public health or equivalent professional experience.
• Demonstrable experience working in the international nutrition sector, including experience working in developing countries.
• Experience producing technical content for a publication, for example writing technical articles, papers and/ or content for peer-reviewed journals.
• Knowledge of the international nutrition sector across a broad range of topics (management of wasting (SAM, MAM, MAMI), IYCF-E, health systems strengthening, adolescent nutrition, women’s nutrition, WaSt and food systems in particular).
• Understanding of relevant research methodologies. Excellent English writing skills and attention to detail.
• Experience of in-depth knowledge management, and / or projects that focus on ‘learning’

About the Youth Endowment Fund 

We’re here to prevent children and young people becoming involved in violence. We do this by finding out what works and building a movement to put this knowledge into practice. 

In recent years violent crime has risen significantly. Homicides, assaults, robberies and offences involving weapons have all seen sustained growth. We have also seen large increases in violent crime involving children and young people. This is a tragedy. Every child captured in these numbers is an important member of our community and society has a duty to protect them. 

The Youth Endowment Fund (YEF) is a charity with a £200m endowment and a mission that matters. We exist to prevent children and young people becoming involved in violence. We do this by funding great initiatives, finding what works and working for change – scaling up and spreading the practices that make a difference.

This role and why it’s important 

It's critical to our mission that we understand how and why young people become involved in violence. The YEF’s work combines conducting rigorous evaluations and research studies with hearing directly from young people. It is also important to us that young people are central to the messages we share externally.

Your role involves ensuring that young people’s perspectives are heard and integrated into our work. This includes supporting our Youth Advisory Board (YAB) and helping young people’s voices play a central part in YEFs external communications.

This role also supports the wider team managing grants, contracts and providing general team support.

Key responsibilities: 

1. Youth Advisory Board support: 

• Plan engaging activities for YAB meetings and events. These activities require working some evenings and occasional weekends. 

• Provide support and pastoral care to YAB members, including personal development planning and safeguarding.

• Help recruit YAB members (young people aged 16 –25) through interviews and managing recruitment. 

• Develop and schedule the YAB induction programme for new members. 

• Monitor attendance and engagement of YAB members. 

• Coordinate YAB attendance at external events. 

2. Facilitating Youth Voice in communications: 

• Act as a bridge between the YAB and our external communications team. 

• Work with the communications team to amplify young people's voices on social media. 

• Assist young people in sharing their views and stories through various communication methods.

• Maintain records of payments and tasks using Salesforce.

The Director of People and Culture leads on fostering a positive work environment in order to help develop a strong organisational culture, providing high quality leadership and oversight on the development and delivery of Girls Not Brides’ People and Culture strategy. As a people and culture senior level professional, you will have an evidential understanding of all aspects of HR practices, both UK and International. This is a pivotal role supporting the transformation of Girls Not Brides, leading the delivery of a workforce strategy that ensures we have a stable, sustainable, skilled, dynamic, and diverse workforce capable of delivering the goals of the organisation. Strategic Planning and Organisational Leadership

• Lead the development and implementation of Girls Not Brides’ people and culture strategies to deliver on the vision, mission and goals set out in the Secretariat and Partnership strategies, 2022-2025.

One in seven people in the UK experience tinnitus.  This role will positively and proactively innovate, manage and improve Tnnitus UK's services and build on the reputation of Tinnitus UK to date.  This role leads Tinnitus UK's efforts in providing direct support to Tinnitus through multiple channels including telephone, and online.  In addition liaises with regional support group leaders in the provision of support, face to face and locally.  Given that Tinnitus UK is the only charity in the UIK to provide such services delivery of these services at the highest standard is essential and consequently enhances the reputation of the charity,

The position is responsible for the development of the strategic and annual plans associated with the provision of these support services, and has direct day to day responsibility for implementing them through multiple channels (helpline services, support group and volunteer programme, events) nationally in Tinnitus UK.

This role will maintain and develop Tinnitus UK's digital offerings, ensuring these are delivered in ways that help and encourage people to access our services now and in the future.  This will include maintaining and monitoring existing services and developing, testing and embedding new ones.

Main Responsibilities

1. Develop and implement our services strategy

• Strategic and operational oversight of all Tinnitus UK's services to the tinnitus community, optimising both digital and traditional models and ensuring relevance and quality
• Innovatively improve and extend Tinnitus UK service provision, with a primary focus on people living with tinnitus, recognising that Support Services should be available at all times when people need them, calling for a strong digital capability
• Identify relevant people and organisations and build relationships to enable better support around the UK for poeple with tinnitus.
• Work with all staff to ensure Tinnitus UK's information and engagement services are understood and well delivered by all staff.

2. Intergrated approach to service user involvement

• Continually analyse and understand the needs of people with tinnitus, care givers, regional co-ordinators, partners and other stakeholders and develop appropriate services to meet them
• Ensure Tinnitus UK's support group network maintain best practice and work with colleagues to identify under-performing groups and develop action plans for improvement
• Establish links with key internal teams and external bodies, managing risk and helping to evaluate our involvement in partnerships and collaborative work.

3. Understanding the needs of the tinnitus community

• Run focus groups to fully understand the needs of people with tinnitus

4. Develop Tinnitus UK's outreach services to people who experience tinnitus

• Lead strategic development of Tinnitus UK's helpline and other outreach services.
• Identify gaps in tinnitus support service provision and work with colleagues to ensure they are filled
• Ensure connectivity between service users' journey across Tinnitus UK's services
• Oversee development of Tinnitus UK's chatbot function in relation to tinnitus support

5. Volunteering and placements

• Work with relevant staff to develop the programme for internal and external volunteering opportunities designed to enhance service delivery and encourage growth of individual volunteers
• Coordinate placements as and when required to ensure the organisation benefits from them

6. Events

• Work with relevant staff to implement a programme of events (conferences, awareness events, training courses) to meet the needs of the tinnitus community
• Lead the innovation of events, using digital and other tools to widen their availability to make them more diverse

7. Quality

• Lead Tinnitus UK's work to assess social impact and value
• Ensure Tinnitus UK's tinnitus support services are founded on evidence-based research and that our advice to people living with tinnitus remains accurate and appropriate in response to developments in the treatment of tinnitus.
• Work with colleagues to identify underperforming services and drive improvement of standards and quality
• Work with staff and volunteers to ensure a high quality information service

8. Leadership

• Work as part of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to ensure oversight of strategic and operational matters and support the Chief Executive
• Lead the development and delivery of Tinnitus UK's annual operational business for Services and contribute to the overall charity's business plan
• Provide evidence, data and ideas to support the fundraising team to develop proposals to underpin Tinnitus UK services.

9. Drive change and maximise our potential

• Explore cost effective digital solutions that optimise our use of resources
• Apply management techniques, tools and solutions to drive the change and transition to greater use of digital tools in service delivery

• Co-ordinate and attend internal and external meetings and events

ROLE SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Vice President, Partnerships based in the UK, you will work closely with the teams in our dual headquarters (Toronto, Canada and London, UK), as well as programme and fundraising teams across Africa, Asia, Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. You will be responsible for coordinating a variety of functions that support Right To Play’s (RTP’s) global business development and grant management strategy, supporting proposal development for new funding opportunities and grant management for existing donor partnerships. The role will also include internal support for different fundraising offices globally, to ensure joined up approaches are undertaken to secure and manage grant funding across RTP.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

#1. Funding Identification (15% of Time)

• Lead global prospecting for new business development by tracking funding opportunities, and researching suitable new funding opportunities from governments, private organizations, and foundations in line with RTP’s theory of change and organizational priorities.
• Research and understand the current funding strategies of institutional donors and philanthropic giving organisations to support strategic decision-making on new business development. This will include a focus on regional, country, and sectoral funding trends relevant to RTP’s geographic and thematic areas.
• Monitor funding opportunities and ‘calls’, ensuring that the relevant departments globally within RTP are informed in a timely manner with tailored information.
• Act as the global focal point for the internal application approval process by ensuring documentation for go/no go and proposal processes are compliant with procedures and stored in appropriate online portals.

#2. Proposal Development and Grant Management Support (30% of Time)

• Work in conjunction with relevant departments across RTP (including Global Programs, Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning, and Communications departments), to lead the development of different thematic and programme funding materials that will support new donor acquisition and strong donor stewardship.
• Support programme funding personnel across the organisation in the development of specific materials to assist in new business development and equip fundraisers to seek relevant funding opportunities.
• Support the development of proposals in response to specific funding opportunities as required by the Global Partnerships team and occasionally the Country Office teams, in some cases this will be leading on certain proposals.
• Support programme funding personnel across the organisation in the development of project narrative and financial reports, to ensure high standards of reporting and donor stewardship are maintained. In some cases, this will be leading on certain reports.
• Provide additional ad-hoc support to fundraising activities, personnel and offices across the organisation globally as required across the programme funding cycle to ensure strong proposal development and grant management practices are maintained. 
• Participate in, and represent, RTP in external meetings and networks as required.

#3. Data Management, System Compliance and Coordination (40% of Time)

• Track funding applications, pipelines and reports across all fundraising departments globally, using RTP’s Client Relationship Management (CRM) platform and other tracking tools as required.
• Work closely with fundraising offices across the organisation to ensure timely and accurate use of RTP’s CRM platform so accurate fundraising data is maintained in the system.
• Support quarterly reporting and analysis of global funding progress, funding pipelines, funding priorities, tracking against targets/objectives, and disseminate the information globally to all relevant staff.
• Support the preparation of materials (including presentations) on organisational funding performance for the senior Executive Management Teams.
• Manage internal information databases and Microsoft SharePoint sites ensuring documents related to proposals, donor reports, fundraising materials etc. are stored according to agreed protocols and disseminated across the fundraising and program delivery offices.
• Work closely with the Global Fundraising Operations Manager and Global Business Analyst to ensure the platform remains an accurate and effective database of donor information and responding to ad-hoc tasks as necessary.
• Lead on the preparation and coordination of various monthly procedures as required.

#4. Global Partnerships Team Support (10% of Time)

• Contribute to strategic discussions within the team to support planning and priorities.
• Support the planning and implementation of internal meetings and/or conferences.
• Keep up to date with the major issues pertaining to children, child rights and development, as well as the donor environment and developments within RTP.
• Additional tasks as requested by the members of the Global Partnerships Team.
• Undertake general office administrative tasks as needed.

EDUCATION/TRAINING/CERTIFICATION:

• Undergraduate degree or equivalent in international development, political science, international relations, or related discipline; or equivalent work experience

EXPERIENCE:

• 2 years’ practical experience in managing multiple and varied projects
• 2 years’ experience in supporting proposal development and donor reporting
• Fundraising experience for not-for-profits including developing applications, securing funding from a variety of sources, and a track record of identifying and researching donors
• Demonstrated experience in building strong trust-based relationships with widely diverse
