At Battersea, we value expertise. We recognise each candidate that applies to us will have a range of expertise they can offer us, so we want to hear about this in your own words. We understand the support that generative artificial intelligence (AI) software can offer but it can also lead to numerous applications presenting as generic and impersonal. This makes it difficult to gain understanding of your unique experience.
To best showcase yourself, we encourage you to write your responses without the assistance of AI. If you require the use of AI software to aid in completing your application, we ask you use the generative responses as a prompt for writing your answers and avoid copying and pasting. About Us
We are a high impact, specialist literacy charity supporting the children who need the most help to close their literacy gap. The attainment gap is now the widest it has been for a decade, and early, high quality literacy intervention is essential to give children from disadvantaged backgrounds the opportunity to make the most of their full potential.
Our specially recruited and trained tutors equip children with all the foundational literacy skills, not just reading but also comprehension, writing, listening and speaking. We achieve significant outcomes: children catch up to where they should be and grow in confidence and resilience, able to step ahead and engage with learning and life.
With a clear focus on our specialist literacy intervention work, the charity has doubled in size over recent years, and we are now planning for the next stage of our growth. Funding is key, and we are looking to appoint a Director of Funding Development to take our fundraising to the next level.
The Opportunity
This is a newly created senior management role reporting directly to the CEO. We see it as critical to our future fundraising success and to the overall development of the charity.
This is a role for a new business ‘seeker’: we need a commercially minded individual with a strong track record of securing new, significant funding opportunities; proactive and creative prospecting; building a credible pipeline; and setting and meeting ambitious targets.
As well as being able to confidently represent the charity and evidence significant relationship-building skills across all funding streams, the successful candidate will work purposefully and collaboratively with senior management colleagues and our Trustee Board, and will have line management responsibility for the fundraising team.
We are looking for someone who can become part of our longer-term fundraising vision on a permanent basis, helping to shape and deliver sustainable growth. We recognise, however, that the right person may be looking for an interim opportunity, therefore we are also open to a shorter-term appointment for a candidate who can deliver a significant, measurable impact in that time.
What You Will Do
• Develop and implement an overarching income generation strategy, setting ambitious annual and 3-year fundraising targets
• Deliver and convert new, significant funding opportunities across corporates, trusts and foundations, and high net worth individuals
• Build and proactively manage a realistic pipeline of potentially transformational funders
• Develop compelling bids and proposals that accurately reflect the charity’s core messaging and delivery priorities
• Provide strong direction and line management to other team members across all funding streams
• Work closely with the CEO on the development of a robust, long-term funding plan
• Effectively represent the charity at external events, meetings and conferences
What We Are Looking For
You will bring:
• Senior fundraising experience with a proven track record of securing significant, transformational funding, not necessarily from a charity background
• Experience across multiple funding streams, in particular high value trusts and foundations, corporates and major donors
• A proactive, creative and ambitious approach to prospect identification and relationship development
• Confident and effective communication skills, being able to represent the charity credibly at the highest levels
• Strong writing skills, with the ability to produce nuanced, compelling and tailored proposals
• Experience of line managing a fundraising team
• A collaborative and positive outlook, with the resilience to thrive in a growing organisation
An interest in education, literacy, and equality of opportunity is highly desirable, as is an existing network of high-level funder contacts.
How to Apply
To apply, please send a detailed CV and a covering letter of no more than 2 pages, explaining why you are interested in this role and how your experience meets the person specification.
We want to hear about your individual experience, judgement and communication style in your own words. We recognise the efficiencies AI tools can bring but please do not use generative AI to substantially develop your application.
The closing date for applications is 15th October 2026, however interviews will happen on a rolling basis therefore early applications are advised.
We are managing this recruitment process directly and do not require support from recruitment agencies or third-party suppliers. We kindly request that recruitment agencies do not contact us regarding this vacancy or submit candidate details on behalf of applicants.
The Children’s Literacy Charity is committed to promoting equal opportunities in employment. You and any job applicants will receive equal treatment regardless of age, disability, gender reassignment, marital or civil partner status, pregnancy or maternity, race, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin, religion or belief, sex or sexual orientation (Protected Characteristics).
Thank you for taking the time to apply for this role. We aim to reply to all job applicants, however if we receive a very high number of applications then we may not be able to respond. If you do not hear from us within two weeks of the closing date, then we regret to advise that this means that your application has not been selected to progress through to the next stage of our recruitment process.

About the role
We’re looking for a Senior Programme Officer to join our team, taking ownership of programme delivery while also building the systems and structures that help our programmes grow. You’ll join as a senior member of our programmes team, taking a leadership role across our programme design and delivery, as well as contributing to the strategic direction of our work with young people. You’ll report to our Programme Manager.
This role will involve:
Programme Management
- You’ll take ownership of end-to-end delivery across multiple programmes, managing recruitment, onboarding and logistics.
- You’ll independently scope, plan and deliver programmes, setting clear milestones and flagging early where timelines or expectations need to shift.
- You’ll recruit, onboard and manage volunteers, ensuring we deliver a great volunteer experience and maximising impact for our young people.
- You’ll work with our Programme Manager to scope and deliver strategic projects across the programmes team, using data, feedback and learning to improve our programmes over time and looking for opportunities to strengthen our systems, processes and quality.

- You’ll provide 1:1 support to young people, checking in on their progress and goals, and offering advice, support and accountability throughout their journey.
- You’ll design and deliver training for young people, alongside information sessions and training for our corporate partners and volunteers. This will include taking ownership of specific content areas, and supporting more junior team members to build confidence and consistency in facilitation.
- You’ll uphold a rigorous approach to safeguarding, making sure the welfare of the young people we support is prioritised throughout our work.
Stakeholder Engagement

Team Contribution and Leadership

- You’ll support hiring, onboarding and training as the team grows.
- You’ll help shape the organisation for the future, sharing feedback and ideas, and researching, proposing and testing new approaches that support team and organisational learning.
What we're looking for
We’re especially interested in candidates with demonstrable experience owning programme delivery and managing others, alongside strengths in areas like curriculum development, volunteer management, or monitoring and evaluation. You don’t need to have worked in youth employment or the charity sector before, but a commitment to our mission and good understanding of the barriers to work faced by young people from low-income backgrounds is essential.
This is an experienced hire role, and we’re looking for someone with solid professional experience, including some prior experience managing or mentoring others, who can apply sound judgement and hold real ownership in a fast-moving environment. You don’t need to have a degree.
Programme ownership and delivery.
- You have a track record of independently planning and delivering a programme or project end-to-end, setting your own milestones and adapting when timelines or expectations shift.
- You’re comfortable managing multiple priorities at once, and delivering to a high standard in a fast-paced environment.
Line management and development of others.
- You’ve supported someone else’s development directly - through formal line management or informal mentoring - holding check-ins, giving constructive feedback, and helping them grow.
- You’re someone others can turn to when they need guidance, particularly in areas where you have stronger knowledge or experience.
Strategic thinking and problem solving.
- You can think creatively, spot where a system, process or piece of delivery isn’t working, and take the initiative to improve it.
- You respond positively when things don’t go to plan, and can manage both the day-to-day detail and the bigger picture.
Communication and facilitation.
- You have excellent written and verbal communication skills, with good attention to detail.
- You’re confident facilitating workshops and delivering training yourself, and able to help less experienced colleagues build their own confidence in the room.
Relationship building.
- You’re comfortable building relationships with a wide range of people, including partners and volunteers, and representing the organisation in a warm and professional way.
- You’re able to build trusting relationships with young people. You approach others with empathy, warmth and good judgement.
Resilience and a growth mindset.
- You can operate well in uncertainty, learn as you go, and stay motivated through challenges. Adaptability and perseverance are crucial to the success of the young people on our programme, and it’s important that our team models these behaviours too.
We work with a diverse group of young people from underserved communities. We encourage applications from candidates from minoritised ethnic backgrounds, and those who have lived experience relevant to our programme - particularly non-graduates and those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.
How we work
We’re a small but fast-growing team. You’ll join our staff team (and office dog, Annie) working day-to-day in the business, but will also engage with young people, our funders and partners, our Board, and many of the amazing volunteers who help us deliver our programme.
We use Slack, Notion and Claude day-to-day to keep in touch and support our work across the team. Our team works together in-person at least three days a week at GoodWork HQ, our beautiful space on Warren Street in central London where we host events, deliver training and work with our community.
You’ll need to be able to attend occasional in-person events, including possible evening sessions for which time off in lieu will be given. You should also expect to attend regular in-person meetings with our London-based partners.

The British Academy is the UK’s national academy for the humanities and social sciences. We support outstanding research and researchers, bring new ideas into public debate and help ensure that evidence and expertise inform some of the biggest questions facing society.
We are looking for a new Director of Finance & Resources to help us build on that work and plan confidently for the future.
This is an important appointment at an exciting point in the Academy’s development. We will celebrate our 125th anniversary in 2027, following a period in which we have grown our policy work, transformed our building to create more opportunities for public engagement and developed a national network for early career researchers.
As Director of Finance & Resources, you will make sure we have the resources, systems and organisational capacity to deliver our ambitions. You will lead our finance function and have overall responsibility for HR, IT & AV, Estates & Facilities, and Venue Sales & Marketing, working with experienced Heads of Department across each area.
Finance will be central to the role. You will lead our financial strategy and planning, oversee our financial controls and reporting, and provide clear advice to the Chief Executive, Senior Management Team, Council and its committees. You will also help us think longer term about our financial sustainability, including our plans to diversify income through philanthropy and commercial activity.
But we are looking for more than a strong Finance Director. You will be part of a close-knit Senior Management Team which works collectively to lead the Academy. We want someone who is interested in the organisation as a whole, who enjoys working across boundaries and who can help colleagues make good decisions about where we put our people, money and attention.
You will also have responsibility for some important assets. These include our historic home at 10–11 Carlton House Terrace, our technology and infrastructure, and our trading subsidiary. Ultimately, your job will be to make sure these resources are working as hard as possible in support of the Academy’s purpose.
About you
You will be a CCAB-qualified accountant with substantial and senior finance experience, gained in a complex organisation. You will have led finance teams and significant budgets and be comfortable advising senior leaders, Boards or Trustees.
You will also bring broader leadership experience. You may already have responsibility beyond finance, or have worked closely with areas such as people, operations, estates or technology.
We are looking for someone who can combine sound financial judgement with a practical, collaborative approach. You will be able to deal with complexity without making things unnecessarily complicated, communicate clearly with people who are not finance specialists, and provide constructive challenge when it is needed.
You should also be someone who enjoys leading through others. There are strong Heads of Department across the Resources portfolio, so this isn't about being the expert in every area. It is about setting direction, asking good questions, supporting people to succeed and bringing the different parts of the portfolio together.
Why join us?
The British Academy has a distinctive role in national life. In 2025/26 we awarded around £63 million in research funding. Alongside funding research, we convene academics, policymakers, businesses and civil society, engage the public with new ideas and use research to inform policy.
The Director of Finance & Resources helps make all of that possible.
For someone who wants to use their financial and leadership experience in an organisation with a clear public purpose, this is an opportunity to make a real contribution to the Academy’s next chapter.
Recruitment Timetable
