The Parliamentary and Public Affairs Adviser and Researcher to the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Archbishop of York manages the public affairs of the Archbishops, including their parliamentary work in the House of Lords and other research needs. As a member of the Faith and Public Life Team, which serves both the Archbishops and the wider Church of England, the role is designed to be the personal connection within this team for the Archbishops, focused specifically on managing the events and interventions they make in the public sphere and Parliament, as well as providing relevant public policy research.
This post sits within Faith and Public Life (FPL), the team that supports the Church of England's work in the public sphere, and specifically supports the work of the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Archbishop of York across a wide range of topics, from their role in Church and state relations, to their witness on issues of social justice. The work is set in the context of the priority areas of the Archbishop's ministry, the Quinquennium goals of the Church of England, and the five marks of mission of the Anglican Communion. Policy and research on these areas are carried out within the Faith and Public Life team, and so the post will link across all the areas of work in FPL.

The post-holder's research activities will contribute to, and be coordinated with, wide research activities of FPL's Public Policy team.
As the overall Parliamentary engagement of the Lords Spiritual and Second Church Estates Commissioner is coordinated through the Parliamentary Team within FPL, the post holder will be a full member of the Team and will be line managed, for that part of the work, by the Head of Parliamentary Affairs.
The role involves the briefing and management of events and meetings held by the Archbishops, and the management of their interventions in the House of Lords, including speechwriting. It also involves carrying out research both at the specific request of the Archbishops, and, where possible, assisting the Public Policy team in research that supports the wider Church of England.
Key duties include:
- Liaising with the other members of the Faith and Public Life team to ensure that the Archbishops are appropriately advised on key developments in government policy and legislation
- Assisting the Archbishops, through the Parliamentary Team, in their Parliamentary duties, including research for speeches, questions and meetings, monitoring and updating them on specific issues and events, and liaising with others in Parliament, civil society and the National Church Institutions on his behalf.
- Ensuring that the Archbishops are kept abreast of the wider activities of the Lords Spiritual.
- Organising and staffing meetings in Parliament with the Archbishops.
- Undertaking discrete and ongoing research projects, to assist in the ongoing public affairs work of the Archbishops and the Faith and Public Life team's wider work.
- Assisting in developing briefing material to support the Archbishops' contributions on social and public issues, including drafting speeches, notes and preparatory material for the Archbishops and members of their senior staff as required.
- Providing support for new work areas that enable the Archbishops to address their own priorities in their ministry. This will include work across both the Provinces of Canterbury and York.
- Assisting in the preparation of briefs for official engagements for which the Faith and Public Life team has lead responsibility, including basic research and collation of information.
- Assisting in the maintenance and development of relationships with major charities, NGOs, think tanks and social and public affairs (or equivalent) departments at a national level in other denominations and faiths.
- Assisting in the day-to-day activities of the Faith and Public Life team, such as drafting correspondence on behalf of the Archbishops on relevant matters and responding to the numerous invitations that the Archbishops receive.
- Where appropriate, attending meetings on behalf of the Archbishops and/or the Faith and Public Life team.
The post holder will also assist with day-to-day duties, such as drafting briefings and correspondence, and assisting with the drafting of speeches and written material for use by the Archbishops.
The postholder will be required to have basic DBS clearance.

Shape the future of Fréa – a unique partnership of three Irish charities working together to create greater impact.
We’re looking for an ambitious, creative fundraiser to build on a strong foundation and develop Fréa’s next generation of income and partnerships.
Fréa brings together three established Irish charities with a shared commitment to supporting Irish communities across the North of England. We believe that, by working together, we can achieve more than any of us can alone.
We are now looking for an exceptional Head of Fundraising and Development to help us realise that ambition.
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced fundraiser who enjoys building relationships, spotting opportunities and turning ideas into sustainable income. You will have the freedom to shape Fréa’s fundraising approach, develop new partnerships and funding streams, and help establish the partnership as an increasingly influential and sustainable organisation.
You will build on a strong platform already created by Fréa’s existing fundraising work, while bringing fresh thinking and new energy to its next stage of development. You will work closely with senior colleagues and Boards across the three partner charities, developing compelling propositions and identifying opportunities where Fréa can achieve more by working collectively.
Importantly, this is collaborative fundraising, not competitive fundraising. Fréa’s role is to complement and add value to the excellent fundraising already undertaken by its three partners. You will need the judgement to recognise when an opportunity is best pursued by Fréa, by an individual partner, or jointly – always respecting existing relationships with funders, donors and corporate partners.
We are looking for someone who combines fundraising expertise with relationship-building, creativity and excellent partnership skills. You will be comfortable working strategically while also getting stuck into the practical business of developing networks and events, cultivating relationships and securing income.
This is a rare opportunity to help shape the fundraising direction of an emerging partnership with an established history, a strong network and significant potential for growth.
If you are excited by the idea of building something collaboratively, creating new opportunities and helping three organisations achieve greater impact together, we would love to hear from you.
If you would like an informal chat about the role please contact any of the Fréa Trustees: Ant Hanlon Chief Executive at Leeds Irish Health and Homes, Breege McDaid, Director at Irish Community Care or Patrick Morrison, Chief Executive at Irish Community Care Manchester.

Waltham Forest CVS is the borough's independent infrastructure body for the voluntary, community, faith and social enterprise sector. We help local organisations to be well run, well funded and well connected, and we represent the sector's voice to the council, the NHS and other partners.
We are a small team doing a lot. In any given week we might be helping a new group get its governance right, running a network meeting, making the case for the sector with the council, or getting a grant out of the door. That range is what makes the work interesting. It also means the administration has to be solid, because when it isn't, everything else slows down.
This is a hands-on role supporting the Chief Executive and, through her, the rest of the team. You will manage the diary and the inboxes, service our board and sub-committee meetings and take the minutes, keep records and systems in order, help with events and training, and handle the day-to-day office and finance administration. You will be the first voice a lot of people hear when they get in touch with us.
We are looking for someone organised and accurate, who can juggle competing demands and finish things without being chased. You will need sound judgement and real discretion — you will see confidential material — and a straightforward, approachable manner with everyone from a volunteer running a lunch club to a council director. Experience in the charity, private or public sector is welcome but not essential. What matters is that you can run a busy office well and want to do it somewhere the work means something.
Please apply with your CV and a supporting statement of no more than 500 words setting out how you meet the person specification. You will also be asked three competency questions as part of the application — keep each answer to no more than 250 words. We shortlist on the statement and those answers.
