Do you want to support the running of the charity that supports people in Berkshire’s hospitals?
Are you the person to develop and lead our business opportunities planning, alongside our existing trustees?
You could join the Board of the Friends of Berkshire Hospitals, a charity that improves the experience of patients, visitors, medical staff and others who work in the Royal Berkshire and Wokingham Hospitals.
Our charity grew from a Reading-only organisation set up in 1957, which itself grew from a charitable group in the 1940s. We’re now serving both Reading and Wokingham hospitals, and intend to expand our services and thus our charitable business even further: to better serve all those in the hospitals. Our expenditure in 2024 was £366k, and we have plans to expand our business and fundraising operations outside of hospital premises.
The role and what we are looking for in a new trustee
Trustees are the people who make the top-level decisions for our charity. Our Board includes people with experience and skills in the services we provide to those in hospitals, and we’d expect new trustees to have empathy with our cause and our beneficiaries.
We are looking for experience of developing a business, not necessarily in the not-for-private-profit sector, identifying new opportunities and relationships, creating and implementing our new marketing strategy.
We are a charity not a business, but we apply business principles to governing our organisation. We are looking for people from a variety of backgrounds to join our charity. We want to expand the diversity of our board, in all meanings of the word, and strongly welcome applications from people from less-represented groups.
You don’t necessarily need prior experience of charity trusteeship, as full induction to our organisation will be provided, plus specialist support as a new trustee, including access to external training.
If you can think strategically and plan long-term, you have the primary skills needed by our trustees; you’ll also need to be able to work collectively with other Board members.
Trustees are not be expected to get involved in the organisation’s operations on a day-to-day basis; however, regular contact and liaison with other trustees and employees is expected.
We ask for no more than ten hours of your time per month, which includes all meetings, discussions, etc. You will need access to digital communications, as much of our charity’s business is run that way.
How to apply
This appointment is being managed for us by inVOLve Community Services, a charity-support organisation, who offer a no-obligation discussion by phone or video. A detailed Role Description and Skills Specification is available.
Trustee appointments are subject to satisfactory references.
Your CV or similar will be read by our existing trustees, and an interview offered as soon as mutually convenient.

WANTED: THE GROUND BREAKER.
ROLE: VOLUNTEER COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT & OUTREACH MANAGER
THE MISSION: EMBED THE BRAND. UNLOCK THE CITY.
URBAN YOUTH doesn't just "show up." We land with purpose. But before the van doors open, the ground needs to be prepared. We need a Community Engagement & Outreach Manager to be our lead scout and bridge-builder.
You are the one who talks to the local legends, the shop owners, the parents, and the "quiet leaders" of the estate. You turn a "neighborhood" into a "Partner Zone."
We have the gear. You have the keys to the city.
THE MISSION DEBRIEF
Your objective is to ensure URBAN YOUTH is welcomed, trusted, and embedded across London:
-
THE STREET SCOUT: Identifying the "Heat Zones"—the specific corners, parks, and squares where young people are gathered and need us most.
-
THE TRUST ARCHITECT: Building deep, authentic relationships with local community groups, faith leaders, and grassroots organisations.
-
THE OUTREACH ENGINE: Leading the "Pre-Drop" hype. Getting on the ground days before a session to let the community know we’re coming.
-
THE PARTNERSHIP MAPPING: Connecting with local councils, youth hubs, and police (where necessary) to ensure our interventions are supported and sustainable.
THE SPECS
Who you are:
-
The Natural Communicator: You can talk to a Council Leader in the morning and a group of teenagers in the afternoon without changing your soul.
-
The Map-Maker: You know London. You understand the nuances between boroughs and the "invisible borders" that young people face.
-
High Empathy, Low Ego: You listen more than you talk. You understand that "Community" is earned, not bought.
-
The Problem-Solver: You know how to navigate local tensions and turn "Not in my backyard" into "When are you coming back?"
THE REWARDS
-
The Key to the City: You will build a network of contacts that spans the entire capital.
-
The Impact Lead: You are the reason a "Drop" feels like a homecoming rather than an intrusion.
-
The Crew: Full URBAN YOUTH "Crew" kit and a senior seat at the "Mission Briefings."
-
The Legacy: You are building the foundation for a London-wide movement.
HOW TO UNLOCK THE ZONE
WE DON'T WANT A PROPOSAL. WE WANT TO HEAR YOUR HUSTLE.
TO APPLY:
Send us a 60-second "Street Pitch." Tell us: How do you introduce URBAN YOUTH to a community that has been let down by "the system" before?
-
Bonus: Tell us about a time you turned a "No" into a "Yes" on the streets.

Hello there - we’re Unlock YOUR Potential, a micro/small social‑mobility charity providing employability support to adults across the UK.
We’re looking for a proactive, organised and mission‑driven Volunteer Project Manager who can volunteer their time to help us set up and launch our new charity. This is a short‑term, high‑impact role supporting the Founder directly — and you will be the first operational volunteer to join the organisation, alongside a small team of graphic designers.
About Unlock YOUR Potential
At Unlock YOUR Potential, we believe an “accident of birth” should never determine a person’s destination. We are committed to breaking cycles of deprivation through holistic employability, wellbeing, and mentoring programmes that empower adults to thrive.
We are prioritising delivery in areas that rank among the top 10% most deprived nationally for employment and skills. The need is real. The talent is abundant. The opportunity for impact is extraordinary.
What this role involves
We need a volunteer Project Manager who can take the lead on planning, coordinating and driving forward the essential tasks required to get us launch‑ready.
You will work closely with the Founder to:
-
Develop clear project plans, timelines and action lists for the charity’s set‑up and launch
-
Establish early operational processes, workflows and simple systems
-
Track progress, identify risks, and keep the Founder focused on priorities
-
Coordinate tasks across design, operations, service development and early marketing
-
Support the Founder with recruiting the wider volunteer team needed to deliver our services
-
Help shape the structure and foundations of a brand‑new social‑mobility charity
Your work will directly influence how quickly and effectively we can begin supporting adults who face the highest barriers to employment and skills.
What we’re looking for
-
Experience in project management, operations, or organisational planning
-
Someone who is structured, reliable, and comfortable creating order from ambiguity
-
A collaborator who enjoys building things from scratch
-
A person who cares deeply about social mobility, fairness, and opportunity
-
Someone who can commit time over the next few weeks/months to help us reach launch
Why this role matters
Your contribution will shape the charity at its earliest and most critical stage. You won’t just be managing tasks — you’ll be helping build the foundations of an organisation designed to unlock potential for thousands of adults across the UK.
If after you have supported us and want to continue to volunteer with us, that option is available to you but for this particular project we need a short-term volunteer to help us in the start-up/launch phase).
The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.

Trees for Cities
Salary: Voluntary role, reasonable expenses reimbursed
Location: London with flexibility
Closing Date: 11 March 2026
Trees for Cities is an independent national charity that empowers people to plant and care for trees in towns and cities, targeting places where they have the greatest impact for people and nature. Through trees, we connect people to nature, enrich lives and create leafy, liveable places for today and future generations. In a world facing unprecedented threats from climate change, biodiversity loss and disconnection from nature, our work has never been more urgent.
Since 1993, Trees for Cities has engaged 260,000 people to plant and care for almost 2 million trees across 100 urban areas in the UK and overseas. We are proud to operate at the intersection of social and environmental justice, focusing on communities with the least access to green space and the benefits it brings. To deepen this work, we have developed a new five-year strategy (2025–2030) with the goal of creating a Movement for Urban Trees and Tree Equity. As we enter this ambitious new strategic phase, the new Chair will play a leading role in overseeing its successful embedding and impact.
This is a rare opportunity to lead the Board of a dynamic, growing charity at a pivotal moment. Our Trustees are recruited for their diverse skills and perspectives, and we are proud of our strong governance practices and healthy Board culture. Together, we provide constructive challenge and meaningful support to the executive team, guided by the organisational values that sit at the heart of how we work. We are seeking an exceptional individual to become our next Chair, continuing this work, offering strategic leadership and robust governance to ensure Trees for Cities continues to thrive and grow in impact.
You will bring Board-level experience, including as a Chair, Vice Chair and/or Trustee/Non-Executive Director, and a proven ability to chair Board or committee meetings effectively. With strategic vision and the confidence to navigate complexity, you will demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, build consensus and manage diverse perspectives. You will bring a supportive and empowering approach, with a coaching style of leadership that empowers and enables others to thrive. Experience in the environmental, sustainability or urban greening sectors is desirable but not essential; what matters most is your ability to lead with integrity, inspire others and drive impact.
We want our Board to reflect the diversity of the communities we serve and particularly welcome applications from individuals from Black, Asian or other minority ethnic backgrounds, disabled people, and those with lived experience of environmental or social injustice. If you are motivated to help shape our next chapter and bring the leadership and experience to guide our ambition, we encourage you to apply.
