About the Role
This is an opportunity to join the Board of Trustees at a national fostering charity, following the launch of a new organisational strategy and the appointment of a new Chair in 2025. Key responsibilities include:

Trustee and Treasurer
Rainbow Migration, the longest-running UK charity dedicated to supporting LGBTQI+ people through the asylum and immigration system, is seeking a trustee who will also serve as the organisation’s Treasurer.
We are looking for someone who is passionate about our vision that LGBTQI+ people can settle in the UK and lead fulfilling lives, and our mission to support LGBTQI+ people through the asylum and immigration system and influence policy and practice.

The role of trustees and the Treasurer
Being a trustee is a rewarding role. Trustees are volunteers who bring their expertise to shape our strategy and direction, and help ensure we remain an authoritative organisation on LGBTQI+ asylum and immigration. They have overall legal responsibility for the charity, make sure our finances and resources are well used to implement our mission, and are required to participate fully in the governance of the charity. Trustees also play a role as ambassadors for the organisation and our work.
The Treasurer takes a lead role in ensuring Rainbow Migration’s financial affairs are conducted within legal requirements, accounting conventions and good practice to ensure the financial viability and sustainable development of the organisation. A detailed role description for the role of Treasurer is appended.
Time commitment
We are looking for people who can commit to being a trustee for at least three years.
Trustees meet on a weekday evening five times per year. Meetings are usually held on Zoom except in December when we meet in person in London.
Preparation for the meetings involves a time commitment of two to four hours for detailed reading of papers, which are provided several days in advance.
The Treasurer also chairs the Finance Subcommittee, which meets on a weekday evening at the end of each quarter. The present Treasurer prepares the primary financial statements and notes, from the underlying accounting records at the year-end, for inclusion in the Annual Report and Accounts; the successful candidate will need to decide whether to continue with this approach or if there is a suitable alternative.
Key responsibilities
Financial oversight:
- Support the Trustee Board to maintain a clear and timely picture of the financial health of the organisation
- Ensure the Trustee Board and management team fulfil all required fiduciary and regulatory responsibilities
- Keep up to date on developments in charity finance regulations and best practice
- Chair the Finance Subcommittee to oversee Rainbow Migration’s financial management, ensuring robust processes and controls are in place
- Ensure the committee develops a long-term financial strategy (including a reserves policy) for the organisation, with objectives which can be monitored
- Advise the Board on financial strategy, risk management and resource allocation
- Support the Executive Director and Operations and Office Manager to develop and improve financial policies and procedures
- Work with the Executive Director, Operations and Office Manager and Fundraising Manager to monitor budgets, cash flow and financial performance
- Oversee the production of clear and accessible financial reports to the Board and its sub-committees by Rainbow Migration staff, and lead discussions during meetings
Reporting:
- Ensure regular financial reports (i.e. management accounts, annual budgets, cash flow projections, etc) are accurate, comprehensible, timely, correctly formatted, and properly discussed and understood by the Trustee Board (as required by law)
- Ensure the timely preparation of annual accounts in accordance with charity regulations (UK SORP)
- Oversee the appointment of the Independent Examiner or auditors and provide overall oversight of the annual examination or audit process
Systems and controls:
- Ensure the charity has proper systems in place for budgeting, financial control, insurance, and reporting
- Ensure compliance with all HMRC tax requirements, as appropriate

We’re a not-for-profit landlord who have been having a positive impact on young people’s lives for nearly 100 years, by addressing the shortage of affordable rented housing for those working in London.
We’re the only organisation in London that specifically offers accommodation to working young people, many of whom are key workers, in entry level employment who have no other means of support and are unable to stay within their family networks.
Our current flagship residence, HYELM-Old Street, opened in 2008 and provides 125 young workers who cannot afford to rent or buy properties through the private sector, with contemporary, secure, hassle-free accommodation.

The Role of a HYELM Board Member is to:

1.1 The Walton Firs Foundation is a Surrey-based registered charity (Charity registration number: 1113830), and a company limited by guarantee without share capital (Companies House registration number: 05695208). The Foundation’s charitable mission is to support young people’s personal development and social inclusion, through enabling their engagement in outdoor education, vocational training, and volunteering programmes. Since its establishment in 2006, the Foundation has enabled over 250,000 young people from across the south-east of England to learn, develop and enjoy in nature, including many whose backgrounds and circumstances have previously restricted their access to the natural environment. The Foundation is a recipient of The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, in recognition of its developmental impact on the lives of young people. In 2024/25, the Foundation recorded a total income of £852,977, and a net trading surplus of £81,286.
1.2 The Foundation owns and manages Walton Firs Activity Centre, a fifty-acre facility that provides forty land-based outdoor education activities and residential capacity to accommodate up to 1,100 young people. The activity centre is commissioned by a wide range of children’s and youth service providers and by primary, secondary and SEND schools to deliver high quality curriculum enhancement programmes and outdoor learning activities. In addition, the activity centre directly-delivers a range of services for local young people, including holiday and afterschool activity projects, work experience programmes, and The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. In 2024/25, Walton Firs Activity Centre delivered 479 service commissions and engaged 32,000 young people in outdoor learning activities and programmes.
1.3 Currently, the Foundation has six trustees / directors, who work with the company secretary under the leadership of the chairman of the board, to provide oversight and scrutiny of, and support and guidance to, the chief executive officer and the activity centre management team. A group of twenty-five charity patrons provide overview over the trustees / directors.

2. Role Purpose:
2.1 The Trustees / Directors of the Walton Firs Foundation serve simultaneously as a charity trustees and as company directors, and manage statutory duties under the Companies Act 2006. They are responsible for the strategic direction, operational governance, and financial status of the organisation, and work closely with the chief executive officer to ensure the Foundation delivers its charitable objects and activities for the public benefit, in compliance with the Charity Commission’s regulations and company law. The role’s key accountabilities include ensurance of the Foundation’s capacity to manage high-quality outdoor education experiences and facilities for young people, whilst complying with all relevant legislative and regulatory requirements.

We are looking for a finance professional to join our engaged and friendly board as Treasurer, with specific oversight of the charity’s financial management. While day-to-day financial administration is carried out by employees or external providers, the Treasurer works closely with them and the Board to ensure sound financial governance. The Treasurer provides financial leadership, helps trustees understand the organisation’s finances, and ensures that the charity meets its financial and statutory obligations.

Space Youth Services offer a wide range of youth sessions across Devon, providing safe, inclusive spaces for young people aged 11-19. Whether it's at a youth centre (open access), online youth centre, SEND sessions, LGBTQ sessions, their OFSTED registered school 'Chances' or street-based youth activities, they create environments where young people can engage, learn, and connect. Their activities give young people "somewhere to go, something to do, and someone to talk to."
They operate from eight well equipped Youth and Community Centres across Devon, located in Bideford, Okehampton, Barnstaple, Tiverton, Exmouth, Exeter, Ottery St Mary, and Newton Abbot, as well as their alternative education school, Chances in Dawlish. They utilise a fleet of mobile youth buses to run their services and reach more young people.
Over 3000 young people directly used their services in the last year. Many more thousands are supported through their support to over 40 other youth organisations They have approximately 100 dedicated staff, most of whom are part time. Their annual turnover is approx. £3.5m.
They are now seeking to appoint a new independent Trustee and are looking for individuals who will rise to the challenge, be forward thinking and steer the future development of Space.
Trustee Responsibilities for Space Youth Services:
● Time Commitment: Attend a 2–3-hour evening meeting every other month and an annual strategy day.
● Work closely with the Chair and other Trustees during your term.
● Ensure Space follows its governing document and uses resources only for its stated objectives.
● Contribute to setting policy, guiding the CEO, and evaluating organisational performance.
● Also become a registered director of the company (limited by guarantee) via Companies House.
For this role we are keen to hear from people who has senior level experience in the following sectors:
● Human Resources
● Legal
● Finance
● Corporate or Commercial Business

About the Trustee opportunities:
Scope is seeking to strengthen the Trustee Board further and want to welcome 2 new Trustees with expertise in the following areas:
- A qualified accountant with audit/risk or governance experience
- Fundraising
Trustees act as ambassadors for the organisation, engaging with stakeholders such as donors, volunteers, and beneficiaries. They foster relationships, build networks, and advocate for the organisation’s mission, enhancing its visibility and impact.
The Trustees we appoint will work closely with other Trustees, the Chief Executive and the Executive Leadership Team. Together they will oversee the delivery of our ambitious new strategy. They must be committed to equality, and to involving disabled people in decision making.

With over 35 years of experience, the organisation works with individuals, communities, businesses, and partners to deliver energy advice, retrofit solutions, and innovative decarbonisation services that reduce carbon emissions, lower energy bills, and tackle fuel poverty. In recent years, Changeworks has assisted tens of thousands of households in installing energy efficiency measures, provided thousands with expert energy support, and saved hundreds of thousands of tonnes of carbon, making low-carbon living a tangible reality across Scotland.
The Role
This is an exceptional opportunity to play a key role in shaping the future of Changeworks. The Chair will lead the Board of Trustees in providing strategic direction and ensuring effective governance, guiding the organisation through an important period of growth while championing its environmental and social values.
The Chair will serve as a statutory trustee and non-executive director, offering strategic leadership, guidance, and robust governance oversight across Changeworks and its subsidiary organisations, driving meaningful impact in communities, households, and businesses throughout Scotland.
The Person
The role requires a strategic and analytical thinker capable of balancing social impact with commercial success and long-term sustainability. The Chair will communicate effectively, build strong relationships, and demonstrate a clear commitment to environmental sustainability and social justice, while fostering inclusive governance by valuing diverse perspectives.
Required Experience and Capabilities
Senior Leadership and Governance Experience
The ideal candidate will have leadership experience demonstrating strategic thinking, an entrepreneurial mindset, and an understanding of governance complexities in charitable and commercial sectors. This may include:

Senior management, executive, or non-executive roles in mission-driven organisations.

Experience serving on boards or committees across sectors.

A track record of leading teams through organisational transformation and growth.

Experience engaging diverse stakeholder groups, including social housing, local government, or minority communities.

Proven experience in trustee or non-executive roles, with strong governance and oversight capabilities.
The Chair is expected to have:

A proven track record of chairing boards or high-level committees, ideally in a purpose-driven or hybrid commercial-social environment.

Experience as a charity trustee or non-executive director.

The ability to navigate complex political and economic landscapes to advocate for decarbonisation and a just transition.

A commitment to decarbonising homes in Scotland and addressing fuel poverty.
