About Refugee Biryani & Bananas
Refugee Biriyani & Bananas (RBB) began as a grassroots movement in 2015, in response to the Syrian refugee crisis. What started as a group of friends distributing 2,500 portions of biriyani and bananas in the unofficial camp for displaced people in Dunkirk, Northern France, has grown into a community-driven humanitarian organisation. Initially working under the umbrella of another organisation, RBB became independent to better address gaps in aid and advocacy for displaced people worldwide.
What We Do
RBB supports people facing displacement, war, and inequality, tailoring actions to the needs of each situation. From food distributions to medical support and human rights advocacy, our work is versatile and responsive. We have provided aid in refugee and internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, squats, and other unstable settlements along migratory pathways, including:
-
France: Calais, Dunkirk & Paris
-
Greece: Idomeni, Thessaloniki, Athens, Lavrio, Samos & Chios (our main base)
-
Northern Iraq: Duhok
-
Serbia: Belgrade Barracks
-
Bosnia & Herzegovina - Croatia Border: Vucjak Camp
-
Turkey: Istanbul
-
Poland, Belarus & Lithuania Border
-
Ukraine Border (Poland and Ukraine sides)
-
Palestine: Gaza
-
Egypt: Cairo
Our Approach
RBB is a mobile grassroots organisation, designed to respond rapidly and flexibly to emerging crises. Our main base of operations is on Chios Island, Greece, where we provide ongoing support to people who are displaced.
Since October 2023, we have also established community-led initiatives to support people affected by the war in Gaza, Palestine, as well as Sudanese and other displaced communities in Cairo, Egypt.
Beyond emergency relief, we remain committed to ongoing support through volunteers, translation services, medical care, aid, and advocacy until either local capacity builds or the situation changes. In addition, our Community Humanitarian Leaders Programme (CHLP) plays a vital role in this approach by strengthening the leadership of people who are displaced by building on their existing skills, networks and lived experience in humanitarian efforts.
Our field team comprises 90% individuals from refugee and asylum-seeking communities, representing Sudan, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Gambia, Ethiopia, Palestine, and Yemen. This diverse team is led by our founder and CEO, Ruhi Akhtar, alongside field coordinators / project managers.
We prioritise dignity and equity, involving displaced individuals in decision-making and collaboration. RBB's direct aid includes food, water, shelter, medical supplies, clothing, hygiene packs, and season-specific items like sunscreen or firewood. Needs assessments and communication with affected communities guide our actions, ensuring targeted, person-centered care.
Advocacy & Awareness
RBB amplifies the voices of displaced people by sharing their stories and raising awareness about often-overlooked realities. Through storytelling and advocacy, we aim to challenge injustice and inspire action.
We are a safe space for all people and welcome those who are new to and currently underrepresented on Charity Boards, in particular members who consider themselves to have a disability and those in the global majority. Lived experience of migration or asylum or a commitment to this work is welcomed.
Interested applicants should send a CV with full contact details and a brief covering letter to address your motivation for the role, what specific skills and expertise you would bring and how you meet the competencies listed in the role description.

Create posts, visuals and campaigns that radiate SUNSHINE’s warmth.
-
Grow our online presence with consistent, uplifting content.

-
Shape a voice that is kind, inclusive, hopeful and unmistakably SUNSHINE.
-
Ensure our communications feel safe, accessible and emotionally resonant
-
Bring creativity, colour and joy to everything we share
5. Launch Support & Campaigns
-
Support our public launch with storytelling, visuals and campaign ideas.
-
Help us build a sense of movement, belonging and excitement.
-
Create moments that make people want to join, support and share.
This Role Is for You If…
-
You’re a natural storyteller who loves creating content with heart.
-
You want to use your creativity to make a real difference.
-
You care deeply about loneliness, wellbeing and community.
-
You enjoy shaping brand identity and building excitement.
-
You’re based in or connected to London.

Ready to tell the story that changes the narrative?
At MINDSET, we’re not just another charity; we’re a brand-new movement for men’s mental wellbeing and personal growth across England and Wales. We’re tired of the clinical, "waiting room" energy. We need a Communications Lead to help us cut through the noise with bold, impactful content that finally speaks a language men actually respond to.
We’re looking for a creative storyteller who can capture the grit, the growth, and the real-world impact of what we do, turning our mission into a profile that gets recognised nationwide.
The Mission:
- The Narrative: Create powerful content that tells the authentic stories of the men we support—focusing on strength, resilience, and action rather than just hardship.
- The Megaphone: Lead our social media and digital presence (think Instagram for visuals, LinkedIn for partnerships, and TikTok for authentic, raw updates) to raise our profile.
- The Identity: Ensure MINDSET is seen as the go-to space for non-clinical growth, building a brand that feels like a community, not a service.
The Vibe:
We’re action-first and zero-fluff. You’ll have total creative freedom to ditch the "sad face" charity clichés and build a high-impact communication strategy from the ground up.
Sound like you?
If you’re a content pro who knows how to move an audience and wants to use those skills to spark a national conversation about men’s growth, let’s talk.
Tell the MINDSET Story

Hear from some of our existing Lead Volunteers…
Stuart, Lead Volunteer at our North Shields Mind Shop
Why did you want to become a Lead Volunteer?
I chose to volunteer at Mind, specifically because of the cause – I support the charity in what they want to achieve. Mind also supported me through the lockdown period during the pandemic, which I found very isolating.
I’ve volunteered for Mind for 20 years - I started volunteering for Mind in 2005. At the time, I had a full-time job, but I wanted to try volunteering. I’ve volunteered in a number of Mind shops, including Wallsend, Whitley Bay, Gateshead (which was where I became a Lead Volunteer) and finally, North Shields.
I wanted to become a Lead Volunteer to gain more experience, which I can then pass onto others. I now undertake key holder duties in my current shop. It was a little scary to begin with, but there was plenty of support from the wider region and I feel really proud to now be doing the role.
What knowledge and skills have you gained or developed whilst being in the Lead Volunteer role?
I’ve developed my technology skills – I’ve learnt how to use the till, how to use the computer including emails and Microsoft Teams, how to complete eLearning and the new Gift Aid hub. I struggled a bit before with technology, so it’s really helped me to be exposed to it more. I’ve also developed cash handling skills and how to deal with external contractors. My confidence has really grown and I’m also now able to cover local stores too!
What do you enjoy most about being a Lead Volunteer?
I really enjoy giving amazing customer service and working with the team of staff and volunteers – we have lots of fun whilst we work! The shop has a great atmosphere. My Shop Manager has said she couldn’t do without me! I would really recommend for anyone to come and volunteer with Mind – it’s a great way to meet new people.
Lead Volunteer at our Turnham Green Mind Shop
Why did you want to become a Lead Volunteer?
I wanted to become a Lead Volunteer because I wanted to take on more responsibilities and keep myself as productive as possible. By taking on more responsibilities, I’m able to support the wider team with certain activities within the shop. It’s also helped me become less focused on my myself and my own problems. I suffer from low self-esteem and felt that by becoming a Lead Volunteer, it would help strengthen my self-worth.
What knowledge and skills have you gained or developed whilst being in the Lead Volunteer role?
As I have never worked in retail, becoming a Lead Volunteer has given me more insight into how the retail industry and how Mind Retail operates day-to-day. I have become more patient and not as isolated as before. My communication skills have improved too.
What do you enjoy most about being a Lead Volunteer?
Certain customers are confiding in me about their mental health. I find it great to be able to assist and provide some support. We all just need an ear to listen…
It’s also great to be able to make decisions too. The team I work with at the shop are very supportive and understanding – they look after me and I feel like a belong to a small family. The team really understand that our shops are not just shops! They’re a place where everyone, including those with mental health problems, can feel safe and listened to.
Mind Retail are a network of over 170 Mind charity shops across England and Wales.

LONELINESS AWARENESS LEAD (VOLUNTEER)
Raise Awareness, Tell Human Stories & Help SUNSHINE Change the Way London Understands Loneliness
About SUNSHINE
SUNSHINE is a small but ambitious grassroots charity on a mission to reduce loneliness and help people feel truly seen, valued and connected. Every week, our volunteers bring warmth, joy and human connection to people who feel isolated, overlooked or alone.
We’re now looking for a Loneliness Awareness Lead — someone who can help us shine a light on the realities of loneliness, share the stories of the people we support (with dignity and care), and spread SUNSHINE’s message of hope across London and beyond.
Your work will help people understand that loneliness is not a personal failure — it’s a human experience. Your storytelling will help people feel less ashamed, less invisible, and more connected. Your leadership will help SUNSHINE reach the people who need us most.
What You’ll Be Doing
1. Raising Awareness of Loneliness Across London
-
Lead campaigns that highlight the emotional, social and practical realities of loneliness.
-
Share insights, facts and stories that help the public understand the issue with compassion.
-
Help shift the narrative from stigma to empathy, from silence to connection.
2. Telling the Stories of the People We Support
-
Work with participants (with full consent and care) to share their experiences.
-
Create warm, respectful, human‑centred stories that honour their courage.
-
Show the impact SUNSHINE has on confidence, wellbeing and connection.
3. Creating Content That Spreads SUNSHINE’s Message
-
Develop blogs, interviews, social posts, short films or written stories.
-
Work with our Creative Volunteers to bring stories to life visually.
-
Help build a public voice that feels hopeful, inclusive and emotionally resonant.
4. Building Relationships With Media & Community Platforms
-
Identify opportunities to share SUNSHINE’s work through local press, podcasts, newsletters and community networks.
-
Represent SUNSHINE with warmth, clarity and movement‑energy.
-
Help us become a recognised voice in the loneliness and wellbeing space.
5. Supporting SUNSHINE’s Growth & Impact
-
Ensure our messaging reflects the lived experiences of the people we serve.
-
Help shape campaigns that inspire volunteers, partners and supporters.
-
Strengthen SUNSHINE’s presence across London as we grow.
This Role Is for You If…
-
You’re a natural storyteller who cares deeply about people.
-
You want to help change the way society understands loneliness.
-
You’re empathetic, thoughtful and able to hold stories with care.
-
You enjoy writing, interviewing, content creation or awareness‑raising.
-
You’re based in or connected to London.
-
You want to help build a new charity from the ground up.
-
You want to grow your skills in communications, advocacy or community engagement.
Practical Details
-
Location: Hybrid/Flexible — remote with occasional London meetups.
-
Time: Approx. 3-5 Hours per week (This is a fully flexible volunteer role with no set hours)
Why This Role Matters
Loneliness is often hidden. People carry it quietly — in their homes, on the bus, at work, in crowded streets. Your work will help bring these stories into the light with dignity and compassion.
Every story you share will help someone feel less alone. Every campaign you lead will help someone understand they are not the only one. Every message you craft will help SUNSHINE reach people who need connection, hope and community.
This is not just awareness work. It’s storytelling that heals. It’s advocacy that empowers. It’s connection — shared with the whole city.
How to Apply
Send a CV and a short note about why this role speaks to you. We review applications on a rolling basis — join us and help spread SUNSHINE across London.

- Making sure the team observes charity best practice and compliance
- Collaborating with your Branch Development Manager (BDM) to plan volunteer activity
- Leading the team to follow Cats Protection policies, procedures and guidelines
- Monitoring expenditure and helping ensure long term financial stability of the volunteer group
- Organising and chairing team meetings
- Acting as an ambassador for Cats Protection
Time expectation
Our branch team leader volunteers usually spend 10 to 15 hours per week in this role, which is flexible and can be shared by more than one volunteer if needed. There will be times of year when more hours are required, such as towards the end of the financial year, but support and guidance are available.
You may be just the volunteer we’ve been looking for!
We are committed to building a diverse, compassionate and inclusive organisation where everyone can be themselves and do their best. We are courageous and compassionate in our purpose of helping people see the world through cats’ eyes. Together, we can make a difference. Together, we are all for cats.
