Do you have experience of risk management? We are seeking Audit & Risk Committee members who bring strategic insight, independent judgement and a strong commitment to Samaritans’ vision.

The Committee helps ensure that Samaritans has an effective risk management framework in place, supported by robust internal controls and external audit processes. Its work plays an important part in protecting our staff, volunteers and beneficiaries from undue risk, while enabling thoughtful and well-informed decision-making.

This is an important and pivotal time to join the Committee. During 2025, the Board of Trustees took decisions on the main elements of our transformational future-proofing programme, which we expect to take forward over the next 5–10 years.

We are looking for committee members who can help guide us through this period of change with confidence, care and sound judgement. We are particularly interested in people with experience of risk management in organisations, and who understand how effective risk oversight can support the delivery of strategic aims.

Applicants should have experience in senior risk management or compliance roles, or in implementing risk frameworks at executive or governance level.

About the role

Term: Committee members are usually appointed for a period of three years, with the possibility of a second three-year term.

Location: The role is home based and may involve some travel within the UK.

Time commitment: As a minimum, attendance is required at four committee meetings each year, either in person or via videoconferencing. Generally two meetings a year will be held in-person or hybrid.

Remuneration: The role is voluntary.

Headlight is a friendly, non-clinical peer to peer support group and one to one mentoring for young people experiencing emotional and mental health issues. We rely on volunteers to help run our fortnightly evening sessions in Ottery St Mary alongside trained staff.

We’ve got an exciting opportunity for volunteers to support Bristol Animal Rescue Centre within our Facilities team – helping care for our site and the future of its animals.

In this multifaceted role, you’ll be undertaking a wide range of duties, from driving animals in need to medical/rehabilitation specialists, to helping us ensure our site is health and safety compliant, and to helping us maintain the site with our maintenance crew. 

On one day, for example, you might be transferring animals from our Clinic or Animal  Rehoming Centre to other rescues we partner with in the South West. You might be involved in transporting dogs, cats, and small animals (such as ferrets and rabbits) to and from veterinary practices in Bristol. Then, on a different day, you may be helping with the testing of our emergency lighting, looking after our facilities and helping to collect supplies. 

Every effort makes a difference, and our volunteers are such a support to our team, making a vital difference to the lives and outcomes of the animals in our care. At our charity, you’ll be volunteering as part of a team of passionate, dedicated people committed to making a difference in animal welfare.

What would I be doing as a Volunteer Driver and Site Support Assistant? 

• Transferring sick and injured wildlife and domestic animals to a local vet practice or wildlife centre, e.g. in Taunton or Wiltshire. You would be driving the Bristol A.R.C. van, which is specially equipped for transporting animals 
• Helping the Maintenance Team with various aspects of building maintenance and facilities at Bristol Animal Rescue Centre. This might include painting, drain and  gutter maintenance, changing locks, for instance 
• Assisting in Health and Safety duties, helping to ensure the site remains a safe place to work and volunteer
• Generally keeping the Charity site clean and tidy, and supporting with weeding /  gardening 
• Other ad-hoc driving duties on a needs-basis, for example collecting and dropping off  donations

What’s important for me to know? 

Part of your shift might involve transferring animals, and this will take priority when necessary. Therefore, we are looking for volunteers who have a full, clean driving licence for this role. In addition, we would ask that as a volunteer, you can: 

• adhere to our protocols, procedures and policies as set out in your training and  guidance 
• manage time well and transfer animals in a timely manner (to the best of your ability) 
• ensure that appropriate footwear and PPE is worn when directed and as necessary
• update us with any changes to your driving license or driver status 

How often would I volunteer?

Shifts are weekly, at the same time each time.

We have morning or afternoon shifts available, on any weekday (Mon-Fri) – at the following times:

Morning – 09:00-12:00
Afternoon – 12:00-17:00

What skills and attributes might I ideally need for this role? 

Experience, enthusiasm and a willingness to get involved are always a great help, and we would like to hear in particular (with some specific examples, if you can) about your:

• Understanding of health and safety, and its importance 
• Experience in any aspects of site or building maintenance; and general ‘DIY’

I haven’t had much experience. Can I still apply? 

Knowledge of building maintenance or health and safety is desirable, yet we welcome applications from anyone. If you are not particularly experienced, we would be pleased to hear about any other relevant skills or qualities you feel you could bring to the role. 

The one thing that you will need, is a clean driving licence and the willingness to drive a Transit-sized vehicle.

What else might I need to consider before I apply? 

• We ask that applicants bear in mind that whilst transporting animals is an important part of this role – this does not involve socialising the animals
• This role would suit someone who is comfortable undertaking duties independently  and using their initiative, as required
• A percentage of your time volunteering would be spent around the Centre in different  areas, and this will be quite a physical role
• We hope that our volunteers will stay with us for a period of at least six months, as we think this will allow the chance to get the best out of the experience. If you wish for a shorter-term or more ad-hoc role, you may wish to consider our Fundraising or  Events Volunteer roles
• Our volunteering roles are popular, and we kindly ask that you consider the time and regularity that you can commit to the role, to ensure this is the right fit for you
• For this particular role, we welcome applications from anyone over the age of 20 years old with two years clean driving experience

Board Members are jointly and severally responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity, its financial health, probity of its activities, developing the organisation’s aims, objectives, and goals in accordance with the Constitution, legal and regulatory guidelines. All Board Members should be aware of and understand their individual and collective responsibilities and should not be overly reliant on one or more Members in any aspect of the governance of the charity.

Chair Specific Duties

• Rebuild with Hope operates within the law, and according to its constitution and its commitments to stakeholders and is adequately resourced to meet its commitments.
• Rebuild with Hope develops an effective strategy in line with the core values of the organisation
• All Board Members are fully involved in discussions and decisions, and the contribution of individual Members is monitored. The Chair will encourage group decision making, teamwork, and a sense of shared purpose, and will foster a sense of inclusivity and shared mission by informing the Board at each meeting of any ‘Chair’s business’ which has taken place since the last meeting
• The Board’s agenda is appropriate and focuses on the key strategic issues, all planned business is dealt with in an equitable, fair manner and a conclusion is reached in each case, and that decisions are clearly and accurately minuted
• The Board continually monitors Rebuild with Hope’s progress, and that Board Members have regular, timely and relevant information on strategic and financial issues and key risks
• Board Members have a proper knowledge and understanding of their roles and responsibilities
• The Board delegates, as appropriate, to its Committees and to its Chief Executive
• Regular reviews of Board, Committee and Chief Executive performance are undertaken, and a programme of development processes for the Board, its Members, and the Chief Executive is established
• Periodic reviews of the composition and workings of Rebuild with Hope are undertaken to ensure it continues to respond appropriately to changes in the wider environment
• Effective use is made of the Board’s time within, and between, meetings
• The Board receives professional advice when necessary
• The support and commitment of Rebuild with Hope’s partners and key stakeholders are developed and sustained
• They represent Rebuild with Hope as required and foster positive relationships with a range of stakeholders. The Chair will ensure that a high profile is maintained for the organisation, and that stakeholders are kept informed of our work
• Positive working relationships are maintained among Board Members and with the Chief Executive to enable an appropriate balance of challenge and support to be provided 

Duties

• Ensuring the charity complies with legislative and regulatory requirements and acts within the confines of the Constitution and its charitable objects.
• Acting in the best interest of the charity, beneficiaries, and future beneficiaries.
• Promoting and developing the charity to help it grow and maintain its public benefit.
• Maintaining sound financial management and control of the charity’s resources.
• Ensuring a fully effective and appropriate system recruitment, for appointment the and monitoring of the work and activities for the CEO and Senior Management team.
• Ensuring the effective and efficient administration of the charity and its resources, striving for best practice in good governance.
• Maintaining absolute confidentiality about all aspects of Trustees’ business

Our fundraising team leaders have the exciting and varied role of inspiring our fundraising volunteers to plan and deliver local fundraising events. Using their passion and imagination, they oversee a small team of fundraising volunteers who come together to raise the vital funds needed to cover costs such as veterinary bills and food. Our fundraising team leaders support their team of volunteers in all aspects of their roles, making sure our volunteers are happy, confident and supported. Activities include:

· Supporting and encouraging a team of fundraising volunteers

· Planning fundraising events and activities with your team

· Allocating tasks before and during fundraising events

· Keeping financial records from fundraising events

· Encouraging and promoting a professional image of Cats Protection 

· Following policies and guidelines and ensuring licences and permits are obtained for events

You will develop new skills, expand your knowledge and make a significant contribution to improving the lives of cats and kittens by helping raise funds and awareness through organising local events. You will also meet new people, make new friends and be part of a dedicated team of volunteers. You will be supported and guided from our National Cat Centre and through our regional and local volunteer groups and teams. We offer engaging online and face-to-face training, expenses and have policies and processes to help volunteers get the most out of their time with us.

We're looking for someone with the following:

· Great people skills and the ability to bring out the best in others

· Excellent organisational skills

· The ability to prioritise and delegate

· An appreciation of the importance of handling money and charity resources responsibly

· Fine-tuned communication skills and a passion for engaging with people within your local community

· Basic IT skills to use Cats Protection systems - training and support can be provided

· Committee volunteers need to be aged 18+

Our fundraising team leaders usually spend three to four hours per week in this role, which is flexible and can be shared by more than one volunteer if needed.
