Job description

This is an exciting time in MACS' history as we accelerate our efforts to grow and develop our charity.  To support the delivery of our ambitious plans, we are now looking for up to 4 new trustees.

About MACS

MACS is the UK's only charity specifically supporting children and adults born with Microphthalmia (small underdeveloped eye/s), Anophthalmia (no eye/s) or Coloboma (cleft of the eye/s). We support people affected by these rare conditions to connect with each other and we provide access to emotional and practical support, grants, and regional activities.

Our vision is of a world where all people affected by MACS conditions enjoy the same opportunities as everyone else. Our mission is to become the leading authority on MACS conditions and to provide comfort and support to people impacted by them.

We have three core values which are vitally importantant in any trustee or member of staff joining MACS. They are: - Offering acceptance and inspiring trust; giving support and; providing opportunity.

About the role

As a UK wide chairty we want our Board to have representation from across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.  Our Board meetings are currently held in London however, we do have facilities to enable remote attendance at meetings.

Whilst we’re keen to hear from people who have particular experience in law, finance, governance, fundraising or the medical profession, we’d love to hear from anyone who shares our core values and has the passion and commitment to help us improve. MACS is also committed to continually improving the diversity of our Board and would particularly welcome applications from BAME communities.

We are specifically looking for people to join our young and dynamic Board who can demonstrate:

  • Commitment to and willingness to work in accordance with MACS’ principles and values
  • Willingness to devote the necessary time and effort
  • Strategic vision
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team
  • Good, independent judgement
  • Willingness to speak their mind
  • Ability to think creatively
  • Willingness to participate in fundraising activities when require
  • Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship
  • Willingness to uphold Nolan's seven principles of public life as outlined in the Trustee Code of Conduct: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership

If joining a young and dynamic charity appeals to you, please do get in touch. We'd love to hear from you.

Applications are by CV (no more than 2 pages please) and covering letter.  Your covering letter should include why you’re interested in becoming a MACS trustee, and what value you’d add to the MACS Board.

Closing date for applications is 12:00 noon on Friday 31 January 2020
