The St Matthew’s Project is looking for a passionate and experienced Wellbeing and Outreach Worker to help strengthen our trauma-informed approach and support young people through our Fit 4 Life programme.

This role is at the heart of our work with young people facing disadvantage and navigating key transition points in their lives. You’ll deliver 1:1 and group wellbeing support, work closely with families, contribute to staff wellbeing, and help shape a supportive, trauma-informed environment across the organisation.

We’re currently recruiting full-time or part-time (min. 21 hrs. p.w.) Mental Health Practitioner in our Young Carers Service to work directly with young people in Croydon.For all posts you need to have a mental health qualification (or other relevant qualification i.e. Youth Work, Social Work) and at least two years’ experience of working with young people. We are also looking for people with an open and flexible attitude; excellent engagement skills and a passion for working with children and young people around mental health. It would be desirable if you have experience working with young carers, young adult carers or families with caring responsibilities.

Responsibilities include offering detailed carers assessments and a flexible range of short-term mental health interventions to children and young people aged 5-25 including individual and group-based support; annual reviews, workshops, mental health/wellbeing/carer themed activities, respite activities for young carers. The posts have scope and opportunity for developing new initiatives and ways of working to support young people’s mental health and wellbeing across South London.

All posts are fully office based and will require flexible working across service areas and interventions and will involve regular evening (2 evenings for full time) and weekend (Saturday) work to meet the needs of young carers and young adult carers.

Our Youth and Play Practitioners will play a pivotal role in the Children, Young People and Families (CYPF) team, working as a core team of practitioners to ensure the smooth running of our programmes and services. In this role you will be part of a small and dynamic team which delivers a wide range of programmes and activities, both from Tulse Hill Adventure Playground and in conjunction with local schools. The work of the Children, Young People and Families team is diverse and varied. Our current services include open access adventure play and youth activities at our Adventure Playground, school holiday programmes with off-site trips and activities, mentoring, a Young Leaders programme offering paid work experience to young people, and working together with our youth partnerships Building Young Brixton and Lambeth Peer Action Collective.

We are in an exciting time of development for the team. To support our range of children and young people, our team will be made up of specialist Youth Workers and Play Practitioners bringing in relevant skills and experience. Whilst you will work across all of our Children, Young People and Families services you will have a specific focus:

As a Youth Worker you will:

• Focus on supporting our secondary age cohort

To be successful in this role, you will act as a trusted practitioner in all our service delivery, advocating for children’s right to play throughout our programmes. You will work as part of the team on the delivery and planning of all sessions, ensuring that the children’s and young people’s ideas are central to the construction of a varied and engaging play environment. You will understand the wide-ranging challenges facing young people and will be flexible in adjusting your practice to meet these needs. While practitioners may have a primary focus (primary or secondary age), all staff are expected to work flexibly across all age groups, programmes and delivery model including open access play, targeted youth work, mentoring and school link sessions.

You will support the development and delivery of our schools, youth centre and detached programmes. This will consist of one to ones and group work with young people within schools, detached work in designated areas as well as centre-based provision. You will be responsible for building strong, professional relationships with young people and adapting and coordinating a service around their needs. You will work in partnership with the other Youth Workers on the team, the Youth & Community Manager, schools and youth organisations around the county as well as the wider voluntary sector and statutory partners

You will work also in the community to identify and support volunteers to become engaged within our services and provision. The Therapeutic Service Co-ordinator & Clinician is a vital member of the DreamArts Core Team. This role combines project co-ordination with direct therapeutic support through our EXPRESS PLUS service and our work with young carers.

EXPRESS PLUS is a free therapy service based in Westminster offering weekly one-to-one or parent-child creative therapeutic support to young people aged 7–18 (or up to 25 with additional needs). It is the only service of its kind in the borough and we provide a safe and welcoming space for clients to explore issues such as domestic violence, sexual abuse, and suicidal ideation.

Sessions take place at three community venues and are delivered by qualified or qualifying therapists using a wide range of creative tools—arts and crafts, sand play, puppets, games—to help young people express themselves in ways that feel natural and safe. With an 80% retention rate after three sessions and two-thirds of clients from global majority backgrounds, the service has a demonstrable impact.

EXPRESS PLUS is proudly user-led. Young people are at the heart of every decision, and the service adapts to meet their needs—typically offering up to 18 weekly sessions, with flexibility depending on circumstances. We accept self-referrals from young people aged 14+, parents/carers, and statutory and voluntary services.

As part of this role, you will also deliver direct therapeutic support to young people with caring responsibilities. This includes offering weekly 1:1 sessions for three young carers and being part of a team facilitating monthly group therapy spaces.

We are looking for a team member who is passionate about the power of creative therapy to support young people. It also offers opportunities to case-manage three-to-four therapists and bring a therapeutic lens across all aspects of DreamArts’ work. We provide appropriate levels of clinical supervision plus a quarterly reflection space to support your professional development.

Please note that the post holder needs to be a qualified psychotherapist/counsellor, with previous experience (paid or voluntary) of delivering 1:1 therapy sessions with children and/or young people.

• Coordinate a volunteer management process

• Ensure programmes are trauma-informed, neurodivergent-affirming, culturally inclusive, and accessible
• Follow safeguarding, child protection, and risk management procedures
• Create environments where all young people feel safe, respected, and able to be themselves

Person Specification

Essential

• Previous experience in youth development work, outdoor learning, or similar settings
• Strong experience in project/programme coordination and delivery
• Experience delivering structured programmes with measurable outcomes
• Proven ability to mentor, motivate, and support young people, including those facing barriers or with additional needs
• Strong communication, leadership, and organisational skills
• A commitment to inclusivity, trauma-informed practice, and empowering young people
• A strong understanding of the challenges facing young people in the North East (particularly Gateshead, Newcastle, and Northumberland), or a willingness to develop this knowledge
• Knowledge of safeguarding, risk assessment, and child protection procedures
• Experience developing and maintaining relationships with stakeholders and delivery partners

Desirable

• Forest School Level 3 qualification (or willingness to work towards)
• Experience in Forest School, outdoor education, or nature-based youth work
• Experience in co-designing programmes or participatory practice
• Knowledge of SEND, neurodivergence, and trauma-informed approaches
• Experience in evaluation and reporting for funders or statutory bodies

Through your work, you will support hundreds of children and young people each year. This role will directly influence the lives of over 400 children and young people across the North East, particularly those facing disadvantage, exclusion, or systemic barriers.

By embedding structured pathways from early engagement to accredited leadership, you will help create a lasting legacy of confident, skilled, and empowered young people, ready to thrive in their communities and beyond.
