About EJF
The Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) is a global non-profit organisation working to protect the natural world and our fundamental human right to a secure environment. We work at the frontlines of environmental injustice, alongside communities most affected by climate breakdown, biodiversity loss, and exploitation - transforming evidence into action, and injustice into lasting change.
Through field investigations, rigorous research, and strategic international advocacy, we expose environmental crime, challenge impunity, and catalyse systemic reform. Our work delivers real-world impact, shaping policy, strengthening governance, protecting vital ecosystems, and defending those who risk their lives to safeguard them.
Our campaigns span four interconnected areas: oceans, climate, forests and wetlands, and the training, protection, and empowerment of environmental defenders and investigative journalists. From illegal fishing and plastic pollution to deforestation, land grabs, and climate breakdown, we confront some of the most complex and urgent crises of our time - always with a focus on accountability, equity, and durable solutions.
EJF has a diverse team of campaigners, filmmakers and community mobilisers working across four continents, united by a shared ambition: to protect people by protecting the planet. We are bold, evidence-led, and impact-driven. We speak truth to power - and we build pathways to a fairer, more resilient future. Join Us.
About the role
EJF's Ocean team investigates and documents illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and the human rights abuses that so often go with it - forced labour and trafficking, physical violence, and deaths at sea. Working alongside local partners, fishing communities and crew, our investigators gather first-hand testimony, vessel and ownership data, satellite tracking analysis, supply chain data and film in ports and fishing grounds across the planet, building evidence that stands up to legal, political and media scrutiny.
This role exists to turn this evidence into action. As Senior Oceans Campaigner you will deliver the advocacy and campaign strategy for the Ocean programme: understanding the specific changes we are seeking, identifying the decision-makers who can deliver them, and designing the sequence of pressure, persuasion and partnership that moves them. You will turn investigations into campaign propositions and drive delivery from launch through to the moment a regulation is tightened, a licence revoked or a supply chain cleaned up.
You will do this across several audiences at once: governments in market, coastal and flag states, parliamentarians and regulators, international fora, and the seafood industry. Current priorities include a push for full transparency in the global fishing industry through our Global Charter for Fisheries Transparency; robust import controls and carding regimes in major seafood markets; ratification and enforcement of key labour rights conventions; an end to abusive trans-shipment at sea; beneficial ownership disclosure; and accountability for distant-water fleets operating in the waters of low-income coastal states.
Key responsibilities
Develop and deliver powerful advocacy and campaign plans for EJF's ocean priorities, setting clear objectives, targets, tactics and timelines for each
Work with investigations, policy, film and communications colleagues to translate new evidence into campaign propositions, defining the ask, the audience and the timeline
Map decision-makers, influencers and opposition across target governments, institutions and companies
Identify and act on political openings, such as legislative reviews and treaty negotiations
Prepare briefings, position papers and policy asks tailored to key audiences and lead meetings with senior decision-makers
Press retailers, importers, processors and certification bodies to act on the abuses our investigations uncover, through direct engagement and public pressure as appropriate
Work with the communications team to support the launch of films, reports and investigations for maximum political impact
Act as a spokesperson with media, at public events and on panels, and represent EJF's positions accurately and persuasively
Contribute campaign content, such as briefings, op-eds, digital actions, petitions and supporter communications
Monitor, evaluate and report on campaign progress against objectives, and adapt plans in light of what is working
Essential skills and experience
Demonstrable experience designing and delivering advocacy or campaign strategies that have secured concrete changes in policy, law, regulation or corporate practice
Superb communications skills, able to deliver compelling, winning presentations in person and in writing to a diverse range of audiences. You must be able to produce, high-calibre, precise copy quickly, translating complex evidence into clear, persuasive arguments tailored to different audiences
Experience working on ocean policy, fisheries, environmental governance, human rights or a related discipline
Extensive experience presenting to diverse audiences to secure their understanding, respect and support
Ability to build effective strategies for the delivery of core messages, and creative thinking to find routes through difficult problems
Strong political judgement: the ability to read a decision-making landscape, identify who can deliver change and work out how to move them
Rigorous attention to detail and an understanding of why absolute factual accuracy is fundamental to everything EJF publishes
Ability to manage several campaigns and deadlines at once, and to work at pace when opportunities open up
A clearly demonstrable commitment to EJF's vision, mission and values and a determination to change the world for the better
Be able to work independently; within a team and be highly collegiate, supporting colleagues to achieve their best.
Desirable skills and experience
A familiarity with trends and recent developments in global fisheries governance
Experience of corporate engagement, supply chain accountability or certification schemes
Working knowledge of a second language relevant to our programme countries
We strongly encourage candidates from underrepresented backgrounds in the environmental and human rights sectors to apply. If you believe you would be a great fit but don’t meet every requirement, we would still love to hear from you.

Help senior professionals hold their industries to account.
Inside Track is hiring one or more Research Officers to support our Insider groups and help to turn their collective insight into meaningful change.
About Inside Track
There are millions of people going to work each day with a sense that they are, in some way, working against the world they want to live in. They may know what needs to change and have ideas about how change could happen, but lack a safe and credible route through which to act.
Inside Track creates that route. We build confidential movements of senior professionals inside powerful industries, giving them protected spaces to share what they see. Their insight helps key stakeholders understand the cultures, structures, norms and incentives creating negative social and environmental outcomes, and apply targeted pressure to redress these.
The Research Officer is key to the ongoing success of this work. You will be hands on from day one supporting group facilitators, conducting background research on key issues and industries, collating and analysing Insider insights, and supporting Partnership Leads to build our network and ensure the Insider voice is heard where it is needed the most.
This is not a conventional campaigning, research or policy role. It combines outcome-focused research with dynamic operational support. You will need to be a clear communicator, highly organised, and skilled at prioritising relevant areas of focus. Above all, we hope you will be deeply excited by the potential of this work, and happy to muck in where needed to ensure it is successful.
Inside Track is growing quickly. For the right person, this is a chance to gain unique insight into how people, power, and institutions operate and shape societal outcomes, while influencing each through your everyday work.
Who this could suit
This is not your typical Research Officer role, and as such there is no single route in. It could suit someone with experience in consulting, professional services, research, the public sector, or another NGO. There are no absolute criteria, but we hope you will bring the following:
A working understanding of the structures and incentives which underpin major economic sectors would be useful but not expected.
Key details
A note on inclusion and culture
We are all here because we believe deeply in this work and its potential to create a better world and we hope that our culture reflects this passion for and commitment to doing the right thing.
We are committed to building a team that reflects a wide range of experiences, backgrounds and perspectives and supports team members to grow.
The successful candidate will receive professional coaching and support, alongside substantial ownership and genuine flexibility in their working pattern.

Here are some examples of how we help our clients:
In Person Enquiry.
Mr Jones attended our drop-in service regarding multiple debts which had accumulated when, due to severe and sudden illness, he was forced to finish work. Mr Jones was unable to communicate by telephone due to his illness so needed in person support. He was anxious as his creditors had been contacting him asking him for payments and some were threatening court action.
The Caseworker helped Mr Jones obtain details of all his debts. They arranged a formal Breathing Space to stop further action from his creditors for 60 days. The Caseworker helped Mr Jones complete a budget, checked his benefit income was correct, and helped him claim charitable support to maximise his income. They also looked at practical ways of helping him reduce his bills and expenditure. Unfortunately, Mr Jones still had very limited income to make affordable payment arrangements to his creditors.
The Caseworker then advised him of all the options and solutions available. Mr Jones chose a Debt Relief Order insolvency solution, which the Caseworker completed, to give him a fresh start by effectively clearing his debts.
Telephone Enquiry.
Miss Smith contacted our advice line for help with her energy arrears. She struggled with a language barrier due to a limited level of English and was vulnerable due to a mental health condition. With a combination of several telephone calls, together with interpreting services, the Caseworker was able to successfully help her.
The Caseworker contacted the fuel provider concerned and advised of her vulnerabilities. They requested that Miss Smith’s details were placed on the Priority Services Register. Even though it was Wintertime, Miss Smith had not been topping up her prepayment meter as she could not afford to do so, so arrears via unpaid standing charges, were also accruing. The meter was also in an awkward position, so she found it difficult to access to top up. The Caseworker assisted her in contacting the fuel provider to install a new smart meter which she could access easier. Miss Smith was then able to use an app to top up her meter which she found more convenient.
The Caseworker assisted Miss Smith in completing a budget, benefit claims, charitable support and fuel vouchers. The Caseworker looked at ways of reducing her expenditure and easy energy efficiency measures Miss Smith could undertake herself in her home.
As a result of these actions, Miss Smith then had some disposable income and was able to start to top up her prepayment meter regularly and keep warm. The Caseworker also assisted her with the completion of a successful trust fund application to her fuel provider, to repay the arrears in full.
