Job Purpose:

• The Head of Finance Business Partnering will design, develop and deliver the long-term financial modelling, including multi-year income and expenditure projections, take full ownership of budgeting, forecasting and management reporting, ensuring they are efficient, insightful and enable Budget Holders to take clear accountability for their financial performance. The post holder is required to have:

• Fully qualified accountant with recognised qualification and full membership of: CIMA, ACCA ACA or equivalent.
• Demonstrable experience of developing and delivering business partnering with fundraising and program delivery functions within a complex and large organisation.
• Extensive financial management experience in a complex organisation, with demonstrable knowledge of developing and maintaining an array of finance systems and reports including management accounts.
• Track record of developing long term financial planning and annual budgets and forecasts with scenario modelling and sensitivity analysis.
• Demonstrable experience of developing and delivering internal financial reporting to senior management and budget holders in a complex organisation.
• Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to communicate effectively at leadership levels.
• Proven abilities in managing people, with the capacity to inspire, motivate, and enthuse others to achieve goals by setting and enforcing challenging standards.
• Experience of charity finance including restricted funds.
• Advanced excel skills to support the range of modelling requirements and advance analytical skill with ability to convert financial information to high quality visuals and narratives
• Postholder must have right to work in the country where they will be based.

This role will join an ambitious programme developing the capacity of the Libraries Connected public library networks. We want to help them evolve as strategic partnerships able to deliver social impacts at scale and to secure resources and investment from national, regional and sub-regional government. Be key to the development of libraries as essential social infrastructure, and help them secure the resources they need to make an impact. 

The role is part of a small team of two Regional Managers, supported by an Administrator. 

By developing our existing regional networks into formal, resourced structures we can enable the regions to: 

• Secure investment for the service and for the libraries from regional and devolved / combined authority funds.
• Create unique regional offers to meet specific needs across and within the regional areas.
• Deliver at scale. For example, the Yorkshire & Humber regional network has 15 library services, and 348 library buildings. 
• Create opportunities for cost saving – through joint procurement and shared / collaborative services. 
• Share good practice and experience on a formal and integrated basis. 

We have 9 regional networks in England, covering all library services and ranging in size from 9 to 33 services. Within each region they provide hundreds of library branches, thousands of staff, and serve millions of service users.  They have a long tradition of working together as peer support networks and to deliver activities such as festivals, marketing, and staff training.

The Opportunity

This is a new and significant appointment for SWT UK. We are looking for a Director of Development to develop and lead our UK fundraising strategy – taking ownership of income generation across all streams, donor communications and supporter stewardship, and managing a team of three talented fundraising professionals.

Our individual supporter base is large globally – growing in UK – loyal and deeply engaged: many give through our elephant adoption programme, which connects them directly with named animals in our care. We are now ready to build on this engaged supporter base and develop it into a structured individual giving programme – with mid-level giving pathways, major donor cultivation, systematic stewardship and deeper philanthropic relationships. That is the central challenge and opportunity of this role.

We also have active corporate and trust relationships, a legacy programme in development, and real potential to grow income from European and international funders. The Director of Development will take ownership of all of this – hands on and strategic in equal measure.

What You Will Do

• Develop and implement a new UK fundraising strategy, establishing clear priorities, income targets and programmes that will drive growth through to 2030 and beyond
• Develop and implement a UK individual giving programme – building on our adoption base to create structured giving journeys, mid-level and major donor cultivation, and meaningful stewardship
• Manage the UK fundraising budget, set and monitor income targets across all streams, and report regularly to the Executive Director on performance and ROI
• Take day-to-day ownership of corporate and trust relationships, writing reports, proposals and partner communications
• Build a major donor programme from the ground up, identifying and cultivating high-value individual prospects
• Develop legacy marketing activity, working alongside our existing legacy administrator and Freewill partnership

About You

We are looking for a fundraiser who loves the craft – someone who is energised by building relationships, writing a compelling proposal, developing a giving programme from scratch, and ensuring every supporter feels genuinely valued. This is a hands-on role as much as a leadership one, and the right person will be comfortable doing both.

• Proven track record in fundraising, with demonstrable success securing income from individuals, trusts or corporates – including five-figure gifts and above
• Experience developing individual giving programmes, including mid-level or major donor cultivation
• A hands-on practitioner – comfortable writing proposals, reports and donor communications yourself
• Experience managing a small fundraising team with warmth, clarity and accountability
• Strong relationship management and stewardship skills
• Experience working with a donor CRM and using data to inform fundraising decisions
• Comfortable in a building role – excited by developing programmes that don't yet exist
• Experience managing fundraising budgets and producing income forecasts and performance reports.
• Genuine passion for wildlife conservation – this role is for someone who cares about the cause
• Committed to in-person working – we believe day-to-day presence and collaboration produces better outcomes for our donors and our team, and ask for a minimum of three days per week at our Billingshurst office

The Inland Waterways Association (IWA) is the only independent, national charity supporting and regenerating Britain’s rivers and canals for leisure, living and business. • Has at least two years’ experience in a management accounting role.
• Has experience working within the charity sector.
• Is confident preparing accurate, timely and informative monthly management accounts.
• Has experience working with budget holders and providing clear financial advice and guidance to non-finance colleagues.
• Can analyse budgets, forecasts and variances, and explain financial information in a clear and accessible way.
• Has strong numeracy skills and experience working with multiple projects or funding streams.
• Is confident using Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel, including advanced Excel functions such as IF formulas and Pivot Tables.
• Has experience using accounting software; experience of Xero would be desirable.
• Understands, or is willing to develop knowledge of, charity finance, Charity SORP and relevant financial regulations.
• Works well independently, within a small finance team and as part of the wider organisation.

This results-oriented role is pivotal to strengthening the Centre’s long-term financial resilience while maintaining its strong community ethos and aligning with the vision and mission.   This to be achieved through identifying, developing and securing new income streams and expanding existing to generate gross profit, to contribute to overall running costs, and to generate sufficient yield for Consortium’s reserves and on-going investment.

Income streams to include from business to business, and retail sales; from increasing venue hires and event revenues; expanding value-partnerships with different sectors, and joint ventures; and at all times ensuring robust financial and performance oversight.

The postholder will be required to develop an Income Generation Strategy for approval by the Board and will be responsible for all its commercial elements. You must be community and values-driven, outcome-focused, an inspiring and collaborative leader and manager, and motivated by the Consortium’s vision and mission, and those of its co-stewards OrganicLea CIC and Ubele CIC.At all times you will be an ambassador for the Centre.

CO-LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT

Working on behalf of the Wolves Lane Consortium, informed fully by and reporting to co-stewards Ubele CIC, and sharing the leadership and management of the Centre with the Facilities & Operations Manager, together you will be relied upon for the Centre’s success in pursuing its strategic and annual plans, and in what it does and how it does it. 

The Facilities and Operations role is primarily to ensure the Centre is fit for all of its many different purposes; provides all users and visitors with a safe environment for their operations and activities, and a pleasant, rewarding, inspiring experience that results in return visits, longer dwell time.  And in so doing reaches and attracts new audiences and more custom.

The Community Enterprise role is predominantly outward facing - to create, attract and secure new and increased income streams through more sales of its products, services and offer; to co-create with entrepreneurs’ new community-based enterprise models and for joint ventures; to secure more investment from philanthropic and individual donations, and for funded programmes from new and existing partners.

These two distinct and overlapping roles will work collaboratively creating synergies to optimize the Centre’s income generating potential, the revenue and investment it secures, and at the same time increase its reputation, reach, and value as a vibrant community asset and contributor to community wealth building.

Together the two senior roles will deliver a seamless, compliant, and inspiring Centre offer, will co-lead and motivate the Centre team through a people management approach that fosters a culture of ambition, collaboration, care and success. Individually and together you will be accountable to the Consortium Board’s for ensuring all regulatory and customer standards are applied and met consistently, pursuing its vision through the strategy for the Centre’s good health, sustainability, and continuous growth in accordance with the Consortium’s values and ways-ofworking.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Enterprise and business development

Develop and implement a Board approved 2-year enterprise and income generation strategy and action plan aligned with the Centre’s mission and that, Identify and secure new, and increase and expand existing, commercial and retail sales income for produce and plants grown at Wolves Lane Centre, Pasteur Gardens and other growing sites.

Develop and increase the Centre’s venue hires & events offer including markets;

Co-create and support new community-based enterprise models that can operate within and / or be part of Wolves Lane Consortium eco-system, with a particular focus on increasing representation of those from Black and Racially minoritised communities

Support the Facilities & Operations manager in the development of financially viable business cases for the cafeteria and the retail offer and  that contribute to Centre surpluses

Grow and diversify earned income streams to improve financial sustainability.

Monitor market trends and identify opportunities for innovation and growth.

Partnership development

Attract and build strong customer relationships with wholesalers, retailers, restaurants, concessions etc., and other businesses who will buy produce from Wolves Lane’s growing sites

Develop and maintain strong relationships with commerce to whom we will sell, community organisations, funders and public sector bodies and identify opportunities for sales and hires.

Act as an ambassador for the Centre, representing it at networking events and stakeholder meetings including the local Business Improvement District (BID).

Develop collaborative programmes and initiatives that enhance community impact and income potential and bring new communities onto our site.

Venue Hire and Events

Develop and implement a Board-approved Hires Policy, ensuring alignment with the Centre’s values as both a community and income-generating asset.

Working with key colleagues, maximise income from venue hire through proactive marketing and relationship management.

Oversee the planning and delivery of events that generate revenue and increase footfall

Ensure effective systems are in place for bookings, contracts, invoicing and customer service. Ensure effective use of the space-rental software, platforms, optimising functionality and user experience.

Ensure compliance with safeguarding requirements and GDPR.

Customer experience 

Jointly with the Centre’s Facilities & Operations manager set centre-wide customer and visitor service standards applicable to all areas, facilities and services, ensuring these comply with all regulatory and health & safety requirements, and are consistently applied and visible.

Financial management and budget oversight

Jointly with the Centre’s Facilities & Operations manager develop annual budget in collaboration with and for the approval of the Wolves Lane Board

Working with the finance team, monitor income and expenditure, producing regular financial reports and forecasts for the areas of responsibility.

Ensure financial controls and reporting processes are robust and transparent.

Oversee the development of funding applications and business cases to attract income and to generate a significant net contribution

Leadership & People Management

Jointly with the Centre’s Facilities & Operations manager, to provide leadership to the Centre, motivating, inspiring and involving the Centre based team including its volunteers, and in a manner and style that is participatory whilst retaining accountability

Manage and coach direct reports in a participatory style, that inspires and motivates for the team members’ and team’s high-performance

Reporting & Governance

Be accountable the Wolves Lane Consortium Board on performance, risks and opportunities.

Report to Ubele Initiative CIC, the role’s employer and manager

Support the Consortium board in its strategic and action planning, within the context of  its long-term business planning.

About the Role/Role and Responsibilities 

An excellent opportunity has arisen to join the Medair UK team as we are seeking a part-time Head of Operations. The post holder will provide strategic leadership and operational oversight of Medair UK's finance, HR, IT and governance functions, ensuring robust systems, effective controls, and compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements. They will support the Medair UK Director and Board of Trustees to ensure effective governance and management of the charity in accordance with best practice and ensure a sustainable operational platform is in place to support all Medair UK’s functions. The Head of Operations will contribute to organisational strategy, culture and decision-making, while also taking a practical and proactive role in the day-to-day delivery of operational activities. They will help lead, support and develop the culture of Medair UK, promoting its values and Christian-distinctiveness internally and externally. 

About you 

You will be a highly organised and experienced, strategic and hands-on operational leader who can provide strong oversight of finance, governance, HR, IT and office management within a growing charity. You will have significant experience in financial and operational management, with a sound understanding of charity finance, governance and regulatory compliance and UK employment law. You will be an effective people manager and leader, with strong communication, planning and problem-solving skills. You will be adaptable, able to manage multiple priorities, work to deadlines, and demonstrate a genuine commitment to Medair’s Christian values, mission and humanitarian purpose. 

Key Activity Areas 

Financial Management and Reporting 

• Lead the charity’s financial management, ensuring accurate records, robust controls and effective financial processes.

• Oversee budgeting, forecasting and cash flow management, in collaboration with the Director to support strategic planning and financial sustainability.

• Manage reserves and organisational funds, ensuring effective stewardship, appropriate cost recovery, timely grant transfers and compliance with donor and regulatory requirements. 

• Prepare timely and accurate monthly management accounts, financial reports and performance analysis to support informed decision-making.

• Lead the production of statutory accounts and manage the annual external audit process.

• Ensure compliance and best practice with regard to legal and other regulatory bodies, including data protection and the timely submission of accounts and other returns. 

Human Resource Management 

• Lead and oversee all HR operations, including the recruitment, onboarding and retention of staff and volunteers.

• Ensure compliance with employment legislation and organisational policies through effective management and administration of contracts, HR records, payroll, pensions and employee benefits. 

• Manage employee lifecycle processes, including inductions, appraisals, performance reviews and professional development planning.

• Maintain accurate HR records and oversee attendance, leave, sickness and other employee-related processes in line with organisational policies. 

Leadership, Governance and Organisational Development 

• Lead organisational operational planning and risk management, ensuring Medair UK has the systems, processes and resources required to deliver its strategic objectives. 

• Maintain the corporate risk register and support the Board with governance, compliance and reporting requirements. 

• Support the Director and Board of Trustees through the provision of financial, operational and governance advice, contributing to organisational effectiveness and long-term sustainability. 

• Own the organisation’s policy framework, maintaining the policy register and ensuring the timely revision, review and compliance of all policies. 

• Foster a healthy organisational culture that reflects Medair's Christian values and supports staff wellbeing, engagement and development. 

IT & Office Management  

• Oversee the IT infrastructure, managing the procurement, installation and ongoing maintenance of IT hardware, systems and software liaising with the IT department at the Medair International Global Support Office (GSO) in Switzerland as appropriate. 

• Lead the development, administration and optimisation of Salesforce , other fundraising platforms and related system integrations to support fundraising, donor engagement and organisational objectives, liaising with the IT department in GSOSwitzerland as appropriate.

• Manage the Salesforce system configuration, enhancements, user access and upgrades, ensuring the platform remains effective and reliable. 

• Drive the continuous improvement of Salesforce systems, processes and data management practices, ensuring high standards of data quality, security and operational efficiency.Implement system enhancements, streamline processes and carry out regular data quality, integrity and cleansing checks to ensure accurate, consistant and reliable data. 

• Provide training, guidance and user support on Salesforce and Campaign Monitor to maximise staff capability and system adoption. 

• Ensure a fully functioning office base which enables Medair UK to deliver its operational activities in the most efficient and effective manner. 

Tasks common to all staff  

• Act as an ambassador for Medair UK at all times when liaising externally and internally 

• Ensure consistent implementation of the Medair brand across all relevant activities 

• Record information as necessary and comply at all times with requirements for handling personal / sensitive data 

Qualifications - DESIRABLE 

• Vocational qualification in business or financial management / administration desirable 

Languages
