Job description

Finance Assistant

  • Duration: Temporary (3-6 months)
  • Salary: £16.15-£17.82 per hour (equivalent to £29,387-£32,433 FTE)
  • Hours: 35 hours per week, Monday-Friday
  • Location: London / Hybrid working
  • Office Attendance: Minimum 2 days per week (Wednesday is the core office day, with Thursday typically the second office day)

You'll join a supportive finance team during a period of growth, helping to maintain smooth financial operations across both the charity and its trading activities.

About Living Streets

Living Streets is the UK charity for everyday walking. Through campaigns, education programmes and partnerships with schools and local authorities, they work to create streets where people can walk safely, confidently and enjoyably. The organisation's trading arm supports this work through the sale of educational resources, awards and merchandise to schools and communities across the UK.

About the Role

Reporting to the Finance Manager, you will provide essential support across the finance function, ensuring accurate and efficient processing of financial transactions and maintaining excellent internal and external customer service standards.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining purchase and sales ledgers
  • Processing supplier payments and staff expenses
  • Supporting Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable activities
  • Undertaking weekly bank reconciliations
  • Managing credit control activities and chasing overdue payments
  • Reconciling debtor and creditor balances
  • Processing daily allocations and month-end tasks
  • Managing the shared finance inbox and responding to queries
  • Raising journals and assisting with month-end processes
  • Supporting annual audit and budgeting activities

About You

We're keen to hear from candidates who can demonstrate:

  • Experience in a Finance Assistant or similar transactional finance role
  • Strong Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable experience
  • Experience processing BACS payments
  • Credit control experience
  • Bank reconciliation experience
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong communication and organisational skills
  • Experience using finance systems
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • A proactive and collaborative approach to work

Desirable Experience

  • Experience working within the charity or not-for-profit sector
  • Experience using Microsoft Business Central
  • Intermediate Excel skills, including working with spreadsheets and pivot tables
  • Experience working with high-volume transactions
  • Studying towards an accountancy qualification such as AAT, ACCA, ACA or CIMA
