Main Purposes of the Post

To provide proactive and effective support to the Chief Executive Officer and Strategic Leads in the delivery of Salford CVS’s strategic work, ensuring the smooth running of strategic meetings, forums and events. You will help enable the voice and influence of the VCSE sector, facilitate two-way communication between the sector and strategic partners, and produce timely, accurate briefings, content and monitoring that tell the story of our strategic work and the impact it is making.

Hours: 37.5 hours per week (excluding breaks), Monday to Friday (core hours are worked between 8am and 6pm).

Contract: Initial 12-month fixed-term contract, subject to the successful completion of a 6-month probationary period.

Communications Manager

This is a hands-on communications role at an important time for GBSS. You will help us plan, write and deliver clear, compassionate communications that make a real difference for babies and families.

Later this year, the results of the GBS3 trial are expected, with a likely UK NSC review to follow. This represents a significant opportunity to influence policy, improve care, and help prevent group B Strep infection in babies.

We are looking for an excellent communicator who can bring people and plans together, write well, keep work moving, and turn complex information into communications people can understand and use.

You do not need to arrive as a group B Strep expert. You will work with colleagues who bring expertise in policy, clinical evidence, fundraising, support services and digital content.

Role Overview

The purpose of this role:

To help GBSS communicate clearly and confidently, through communications that are well planned, well written and delivered effectively.

· write and edit key communications

· hold communications plans for major campaigns and projects, working closely with the CEO and colleagues

· bring together communications across advocacy, fundraising, support services and digital

· line manage the Digital Content Specialist

· keep communications projects moving and delivered to a high standard

This role sits at the centre of a small team. It will suit someone who enjoys being hands-on and is happy to move between planning, writing, editing, coordinating and problem-solving as priorities change. The postholder will be expected to draft a significant proportion of GBSS's core communications content themselves.

Key Responsibilities

1. Communications planning and coordination

· Hold communications plans for major campaigns and projects, working closely with the CEO and colleagues to agree priorities, timings and outputs.

· Translate organisational priorities into clear communications actions and timelines, working with subject leads where needed.

· Manage communications workflows, deadlines and approvals.

· Use trustee and external advisers’ expertise as a helpful sounding board where appropriate.

2. Writing and content development

· Act as the lead writer and editor for key communications, including blogs, newsletters, supporter communications, campaign materials, website content, organisational updates, briefings and stakeholder communications.

· Edit and improve content produced by colleagues.

· Make sure communications are clear, plain English, compassionate, inclusive, accessible and accurate.

· Help translate complex clinical, policy and research information into communications that non-specialists can understand.

· Work from agreed policy positions and specialist input when drafting briefings, consultation-related materials or stakeholder communications.

3. Campaign delivery

· Coordinate communications for major campaigns and projects, including GBS Awareness Week.

· Work with colleagues to agree objectives, audiences, messages, outputs and timelines.

· Work with the Fundraising Manager on supporter communications, helping with copy, timing and consistency.

· Help paid activity fit well with wider campaign messaging.

· Keep campaign delivery on track and support evaluation and learning.

4. Messaging and consistency

· Help develop and maintain clear organisational messages.

· Help communications across channels fit together.

· Support colleagues to communicate sensitive or complex issues clearly.

5. Digital content leadership and line management

· Work closely with the Digital Content Specialist to agree priorities, plan content and support high-quality delivery across digital channels.

· Line manage the role, including regular feedback, support and development.

· Look at what is working across digital channels and use that insight to improve future content.

6. Media support

This role will support media activity through practical communications planning, drafting and follow-up.

This includes:

· drafting briefing materials, background notes, key messages and approved lines

· coordinating communications around media activity

· helping make sure follow-up content is delivered across relevant channels

7. Insight and continuous improvement

· Work with information and support colleagues to understand what families and professionals are asking and where communications could be clearer.

· Use audience insight, communications data and campaign results to improve future activity.

· Identify practical ways to improve communications processes.

Person Specification

Essential

· Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills, with strong attention to detail.

· Experience creating content across multiple communications channels.

About the role

The Academy runs some of the most valued grant schemes and development programmes in UK biomedical and health research. Springboard Awards help researchers establish their independence. Starter Grants keep talented clinicians in research alongside their clinical work. Leadership programmes like FLIER develop people who can work across academia, healthcare and industry to tackle real-world challenges, and alongside these sit opportunities to spend time working in industry, the NHS or government. Moving between sectors should be a normal part of a medical research career (it is not yet), and much of our work is built with that belief: a more connected and mobile workforce is better able to turn discovery into benefit. Between them, these schemes change the course of people's careers, and the research they enable reaches patients across the UK and beyond.

This role leads that portfolio. The heart of the job is excellent delivery: schemes that are well designed and well run, and that make a real difference to the people they reach. You will work closely with the Fellowship, whose expertise and generosity run through the whole portfolio, and you will make sure the schemes serve the whole of the medical sciences community (across the devolved nations and the regions, in industry as much as academia), not just those already inside the most established institutions. And science is global, so this work is too: the portfolio draws on evidence and partnerships from around the world, and the mentoring and networks around the people we support reach well beyond the UK.

Today much of the portfolio's focus is research talent and careers. That will always be a substantial part of the portfolio, but over time we plan to expand it further. That expansion could go in several directions, and what matters is that we are taking an evidence-based approach to ensure that our efforts are responding to what the medical sciences sector needs. Whatever we launch next, the same principles apply; good design, sound funding, proper governance and solid evaluation, with our effort concentrated where it delivers the most impact. So, the job is twofold: run today's portfolio brilliantly and build the future portfolio. It is a role where you can see your work land in people's lives, with real scope to shape what comes next. And none of it stands alone: what we learn from the people we fund sharpens our policy voice, the community our programmes build strengthens our engagement and public trust work, and insight flows back the other way to shape what we design next.

As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, you will share in the leadership of the Academy as a whole, working closely with the other directors: the Chief Operating Officer and the Directors of Policy, Communications and Engagement, and Translation and Enterprise. The relationship with Translation and Enterprise matters especially. That team will shape new partnerships and initiatives that your team is best placed to deliver, so the two of you will work in very close partnership.

What we are looking for

These are the six areas we will explore with candidates. They match the six parts of the role above, so you can read straight across — and your supporting statement can follow the same structure if that helps. We do not expect anyone to arrive with every part fully formed, but the strongest candidates will be convincing across most of them.

1. Excellent delivery

A strong track record of running grant schemes or of significant programmatic delivery. Much of this is operational: holding an annual cycle to time and budget, catching problems early and getting stuck things moving again. It is also about making sure the portfolio adds up to a coherent whole rather than a collection of separate schemes, with the governance discipline — sound contracts, clean compliance, rigorous oversight — that sits behind delivery done well.

2. Building partnerships and negotiating well

A track record of building and sustaining partnerships with funders, delivery organisations and industry, and the skill and pace to turn them into agreements where appropriate. We will want to hear how you have handled a complex negotiation and brought it to a close. The Chief Operating Officer leads the Academy’s income strategy, so we will also explore how you develop partners in concert with colleagues.

3. Range and credibility across the community

This role runs from Fellows (some of the most eminent scientists in the country) to researchers at the very start of their careers, and from government and funders to industry partners. We are looking for someone with the range to work well across all of them, and the credibility to be taken seriously at every level. We will also explore how you have widened access and drawn talent in from beyond the usual places.

4. A focus on impact

A commitment to looking at what difference the portfolio you lead makes. We are looking for someone who treats evaluation as a source of learning and uses what it shows to decide what the Academy should do next, keeping sight of the people and patients the work is for.

5. Leading and empowering people

A brilliant leader of people: someone who gets the best from a talented team by giving them space and ownership, backing them with real support and coaching, and building a culture where people thrive and develop.

About the role
As Senior Caseworker, you will manage a caseload of young people with a range of housing and support needs while acting as the day-to-day lead within the team. You will support colleagues with complex cases, provide guidance and mentoring, and work closely with the Team Manager to ensure the service delivers high-quality, outcome-focused support.

You will develop holistic support and risk management plans, work collaboratively with statutory and voluntary sector partners, and provide practical assistance to help young people establish and maintain successful tenancies. This may include supporting access to education, employment and training, benefits, debt advice, health services and community resources, as well as accompanying young people to appointments and advocating on their behalf.

What we are looking for

• Experience supporting young people with housing, tenancy sustainment and independent living.
• Experience supervising, mentoring or supporting staff and/or volunteers.
• Proven experience working with vulnerable young people or adults with multiple and complex needs.
• Experience developing support plans, carrying out risk assessments and providing advice and advocacy to help young people access accommodation and support services.
• Experience working effectively within multi-agency partnerships to achieve positive outcomes for young people.
• Knowledge of housing legislation affecting young people and an understanding of the barriers faced by people with lived experience.
• Strong communication, organisational and IT skills, including experience maintaining accurate case records.

The Role

You will hold a caseload of women living in refuge, living in the community, or moving on to independent accommodation. Working closely with colleagues and partner agencies, you will provide practical and emotional support, advocacy, safety planning, and crisis intervention, helping women navigate some of the most challenging periods of their lives.

Key responsibilities include:

• Delivering trauma-informed one-to-one support and safety planning.
• Supporting women with complex and intersecting needs.
• Advocating on behalf of women with housing, health, criminal justice, safeguarding, and social care services.
• Providing community outreach and resettlement support.
• Delivering workshops, drop-ins, and training sessions that build confidence and independence.
• Working collaboratively with partner agencies to achieve positive outcomes.
• Maintaining accurate case records, risk assessments, and outcome monitoring.
• Contributing to the ongoing development of our services.

About You

We are looking for someone who:

• Has experience supporting vulnerable women affected by domestic abuse, trauma, or violence against women and girls.
• Has worked with women experiencing complex needs, including mental health challenges, substance misuse, learning disabilities, neurodiversity, or physical disabilities (essential).
• Understands risk assessment, safeguarding, and trauma-informed practice.
• Can confidently manage a varied caseload and work effectively with multi-agency partners.
• Has excellent communication, record-keeping, and organisational skills.

Reach Charity is a small volunteer-led national charity supporting children born with, or who acquire upper limb differences (ULD) in childhood, for the whole of their lives! Being born with/acquiring  an ULD in childhood is rare. Our role in the Reach team is to support our volunteers in every way we can to keep Reach families connected and supported with and by their community as and when they need it for life. This role will help us sustain and potentially grow that level of support. 

Contract: One-year fixed-term contract. The role will be reviewed before the end of the fixed term. Any extension, permanency or change to contracted hours will be subject to organisational need, funding and written agreement.

Location/format: Hybrid working, with a minimum of two days per week in the office: Office 5, The Library Rooms, 59 High Street, Totnes, Devon, TQ9 5PB. Homeworking is subject to appropriate health and safety and display screen equipment arrangements. Hybrid working arrangements may be reviewed and changed with reasonable notice following consultation.

Reporting to: Operations Lead

Core purpose of the role:
The Operations & Development Officer will provide high-quality operational, administrative and executive support to the Operations Lead and the wider Reach team.
The role will help ensure the smooth running of Reach’s central operations, including governance support, policy coordination, safeguarding administration, donor stewardship, event delivery, communications and day-to-day organisational support.
The postholder will play an important role in maintaining operational continuity, supporting compliance, strengthening community engagement and helping Reach deliver effectively for adults, children and young people with upper limb difference and their families.

Key responsibilities
1. Governance, compliance and safeguarding
Policy and procedure coordination
Coordinate and maintain a rolling programme of policy and procedure review, liaising with the Operations Lead, trustees and relevant staff or volunteers as required.
Support the updating, formatting, circulation and storage of policies and procedures, ensuring records are accurate and accessible.

Safeguarding support
Subject to appropriate training, support Reach’s safeguarding arrangements and participate in the safeguarding on-call rota.
Provide cover during colleagues planned or unplanned absence, acting in accordance with Reach’s safeguarding policy and escalation procedures.
This may include occasional weekend on-call duties when the Operations Lead is unavailable.

DBS, safeguarding training and appointment requirements
Appointment will be subject to satisfactory references and the appropriate level of DBS check for the role.
Safeguarding training must be completed before the postholder undertakes safeguarding duties.

Data protection and confidentiality
Handle personal, sensitive and confidential information in accordance with UK GDPR, Reach policies and confidentiality requirements.
This includes information held in CRM systems, Mailchimp, donor records, membership records and sensitive conversations with families, professionals, volunteers and supporters.

2. Donor relations and fundraising administration
Donor stewardship
Provide supportive cover for donor stewardship during colleague absence or holiday, including drafting thank-you communications, updating records and helping maintain positive supporter relationships.
Ensure donor communications are timely, accurate and aligned with Reach’s tone, values and messaging.

Fundraising administration
Support the Operations Lead and wider team with fundraising administration, including funding applications, milestone tracking, data collection and information required for funder reports.
Maintain accurate records of funding activity, deadlines and reporting requirements.

3. Event support and promotion
Event delivery
Support the planning, coordination, delivery and evaluation of Reach events.
This may include support from initial concept through to on-the-day coordination and post-event follow-up.
Where required, lead agreed elements of event delivery, with appropriate support and oversight.

Event communications and promotion
Promote events and campaigns through digital channels, newsletters, local networks and other appropriate platforms to maximise visibility, attendance, engagement and donations.
Work closely with the Operations Lead and Reach team to ensure consistent messaging, effective coordination and successful delivery.

Evening and weekend work
Some evening or weekend work may be required for events or safeguarding cover. This will be agreed in advance wherever possible and managed through time off in lieu or other arrangements in line with Reach policy.

4. Executive, board and operational support
Executive assistance
Provide executive and administrative support to the Operations Lead, including diary management, coordination of priorities, management of incoming enquiries and preparation of briefing materials or documentation for meetings.
Work with other members of staff to identify priorities, support workflow and ensure timely follow-up on agreed actions.

Board and trustee support
Provide proactive support for Trustee meetings, including coordinating meeting logistics, preparing and circulating papers, supporting agenda planning and taking clear, accurate minutes.
Help ensure trustees have the information they need to support effective governance and decision-making.

General operations
Support the smooth running of Reach’s day-to-day operations, including responding to enquiries, maintaining records, supporting internal communications and helping ensure tasks are completed efficiently.

5. Finance, merchandise and systems administration
Finance administration
Support finance administration by maintaining accurate transaction records, processing documentation, supporting reconciliations and working within Reach’s financial controls and delegated authority arrangements.
Liaise with the Operations Lead, Treasurer and relevant colleagues to ensure financial information is accurate, timely and appropriately recorded.

Merchandise and fulfilment
Manage the Reach online shop and coordinate fulfilment of merchandise and other items.
Prepare and post welcome packs, running vests and other materials for new members, supporters and event participants.
Maintain accurate records of stock, orders and fulfilment activity

Systems and records
Use Reach’s systems accurately and consistently, including CRM, email marketing, finance, document storage and communication platforms.
Support the maintenance of accurate records and contribute to efficient internal processes.
