Who we are
Chefs in Schools is an ambitious charity that’s rapidly growing. Our mission is to improve kids' health, through improving school food & food education. We focus our efforts in areas of high socio-economic deprivation, where more than a third of children are entitled to free school meals, and diet-related disease is driving further inequality.
We support and train school kitchen teams to serve the best, freshest and tastiest food possible, alongside meaningful food education. We share learning and resources, aiming to inspire and enable others to follow our lead.
We’re backed by some of the biggest names in food and have ambitious targets to ensure every child has access to incredible school food and food education, setting them up for life with the skills and knowledge to feed themselves well.
About you and the role
This role comes at a pivotal time for Chefs in School and will be key to supporting our vision and ambitions for the next four year strategic period.
You will have significant experience in monitoring and evaluating programmes in a charity, non-profit, or social enterprise setting. As this is a standalone role with no direct reports, we are looking for a unique professional who is highly strategic but equally happy to roll up their sleeves and be hands-on. -
An Empathetic & Pragmatic Collaborator: You understand that school kitchens and delivery teams are incredibly busy. You excel at designing evaluation tools that are low-burden for our partners but high-yield for our learning.
-
Curious & Improvement-Driven: You don't just collect data to check a box for funders; you are passionate about building a "learning culture" where findings are actively used to iterate and improve our programmes.
As we work with children and young people, an offer of employment will be subject to satisfactory references and DBS clearance, in line with our safeguarding policy.
Key responsibilities:
-
Leading on developing and implementing Chefs in Schools’ evaluation and learning strategy, in line with our Theory of Change.
-
Owning and overseeing the impact dashboard
-
Ownership for embedding a learning culture, ensuring that timely and actionable insights are generated and fed back into design and delivery to support continuous improvement.
-
Using internal data and external research to identify what works, ensuring these insights are shared internally and across the sector in line with our strategic objectives.
-
Support delivery teams to collect quantitative and qualitative data using the evaluation toolkit. Ensuring data collection is proportionate and meaningful with high completion rates.
-
Support delivery teams to understand how impact data can help to improve and develop programme effectiveness, whilst maintaining quality.
-
Lead on the dissemination of findings across the organisation, including presenting at internal meetings and events
-
Translating data into clear, evidence-based recommendations to guide decision-making
-
Work across the organisation to ensure our impact is effectively communicated with external audiences.
-
Identify future research, evaluation and learning priorities that could strengthen Chefs in Schools’ programmes and contribute to wider sector understanding of effective approaches to improving school food.
-
Work with external academics and researchers to commission external evaluations to develop our evidence base and contribute to national and international studies .
Essential Skills and Experience
-
MEL Experience: Proven experience in a monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) or impact measurement role within a charity, non-profit, or social enterprise setting.
-
Evaluation Design: Confidence designing and implementing practical evaluation frameworks, data collection tools, logic models, or Theories of Change.
-
Hands-on Data Skills: Strong analytical skills with the ability to independently collect, clean, and analyze both qualitative and quantitative data. You must be highly proficient in Excel/Google Sheets and comfortable managing data platforms.
-
Translation of Evidence: A track record of critically appraising evidence and translating findings into actionable, practical recommendations for delivery teams.
-
Communication & Reporting: Ability to produce high-quality, highly visual, and engaging reports and presentations tailored to different audiences (e.g., trustees, funders, operational staff).
-
Relationship Building: Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence and support busy operational teams to value and embed data collection.

We’re looking for someone who makes things happen
We’re looking for a proactive, curious and practical research and evaluation leader who spots opportunities, builds partnerships, and helps us turn lived experience into evidence that improves services, influences policy and drives change.

With almost 500 staff and volunteers, our teams work in communities and prisons across England, and in parts of Scotland and Wales, reaching people that mainstream health services routinely struggle to engage.
This gives us a unique reach among populations whose voices are too often missing from research, policy and service design.
Our research and evaluation programme aims to:
- Evidence the impact of our programmes and services.
- Understand what works, and what doesn’t, in improving outcomes for marginalised and excluded communities.
- Strengthen our understanding of the value and potential of peer-led and lived experience approaches.
- Improve the representation of excluded populations in research, policy and service design.
We’re looking for someone who:
- Has a strong background in research and evaluation, including both qualitative and quantitative methods.
- Is proactive, self-directed and comfortable taking ownership of projects.
- Has experience of generating evidence that informs policy, practice or service improvement.
- Is excited by the potential of lived experience and peer-led approaches.
- Builds strong relationships and enjoys working collaboratively.

- Is committed to equity, inclusion and social justice.
Why this role?
You’ll have genuine autonomy to help shape a growing research and evaluation function within one of the UK’s leading lived-experience organisations. Most importantly, you’ll have the opportunity to generate evidence that changes services, influences policy and improves outcomes for some of the most marginalised communities in society.
Recruitment timetable
Application deadline: 11:59 PM on Sunday 23rd August
First-round interviews: 7-8 September 2026

The Hepatitis C Trust is committed to equity and inclusion, and particularly welcomes applications from people with lived experience of hepatitis C, drug use, homelessness, the criminal justice system, or other experiences of social exclusion.
The Hepatitis C Trust is a charity dedicated to eliminating hepatitis C in the UK by 2030.

National Voices
Making what matters to people matter in health and care
National Voices is the leading coalition of health and social care charities in England. We have more than 200 members covering a diverse range of health conditions and communities, connecting us with the experiences of millions of people. We work together to strengthen the voice of people: patients, service users, carers, their families, and the voluntary organisations that work for them.
Our Vision: People shaping their health and care.
Our Mission: We advocate for more inclusive and person centred health and care, shaped by the people who use and need it the most.
We do this by:
· Understanding and advocating for what matters to people especially those living with health conditions and groups who experience inequalities.
· Finding common cause across communities and conditions by working with member charities and those they support.
· Connecting and convening charities, decision makers and citizens to work together to change health and care for good.
The Role
At National Voices, our aim is to make what matters to people matter in health and care. Too often, we see decisions made about the design of health and care services which don’t consider the people who use and need those services – especially those with long term conditions and from groups experiencing inequality. While the intentions of decision makers are usually good, they can unwittingly develop services which are difficult to access, stressful to experience and which don’t enable people to live life to its full potential.
We believe that if health and care leaders were better supported to meaningfully involve people living with health conditions, disability, inequality and their carers in decisions about how services are delivered then our NHS and social care services would be more equitable, and person centred.
At National Voices, we believe that this can best be achieved by connecting health and care leaders in health and care to key groups including:
· Leaders within the patient participation movement, who can support and advise health and care leaders on how to share power with people and communities using coaching and quality improvement techniques, and by acting as a critical friend.
· Leaders from voluntary sector organisations and community groups, who can bring insight into the needs, experiences and priorities of the communities they serve. They can identify opportunities to improve how services are designed and delivered, and help connect decision-makers with communities whose voices are often underrepresented.
· People with lived experience of inequality, particular conditions or services, who bring unique expertise based on their direct experience of care. They can provide timely insight into the impact of policies and services, helping decision-makers stay tuned to current needs, experiences and priorities, rather than relying on historical evidence or assumptions.
We are looking for a Participation Manager who can manage our lived experience programme, our membership scheme and our partnership scheme. This role will ensure that where there are opportunities for people and communities to shape health and care, National Voices has the right relationships, processes and support systems in place to connect decision makers with our Lived Experience Partners, members and people with lived experience.
The Participation Manager will:
· Lead National Voices’ Lived Experience Partner programme by strengthening engagement and participation, investing in members’ knowledge, skills and confidence, and ensuring lived experience insights shape our work.
· Lead National Voices’ membership scheme by driving engagement, retention and inclusion, strengthening member relationships, embedding member insights across the organisation, and overseeing satisfaction, records and knowledge management.
· Lead National Voices’ scheme by managing partner engagement, retention and recruitment, overseeing delivery of the partnership offer, and ensuring partners receive high-quality advice, insight, connections and access to relevant people and communities.
· Develop and deliver funded projects, supporting income generation and securing resources to advance National Voices’ strategic priorities.
The Participation Manager will work in collaboration with:
· Policy and communications colleagues who have worked hard to ensure when we capture insights from people and communities, we have established relationships and ways of communicating with key players in health and care so that insights collected lead to impact.
· Research and insight colleagues who have expertise around qualitative research methods and inclusive engagement, who regularly deliver high quality qualitative research on a range of topics and on a range of topics – often focussed on surfacing the experiences of those least well served by health and care services.
· Colleagues across the organisation who lead and contribute to member and partner benefits, including policy forums, networking opportunities, events and other engagement activities.
The Participation Manager will play a central role in ensuring National Voices’ lives its values around meaningful participation so that in both our internal and external work people and communities are engaged in a timely and inclusive way, using methods that ensure their input is heard and acted upon, and their knowledge, priorities, and contributions are recognised and fairly valued.

Our approach to hybrid working
We recognise the importance of coming together regularly, in-person, as a team, so we can share learnings and spend social time with each other. We also recognise that people need flexibility, and that homeworking enables focused work and can fit well in people’s lives.
We ask all staff to take part in pre-arranged team meetings which take place every six weeks in our office space. We also might ask you to meet in-person with members of your team from time to time, or to be available for face-to- face meetings with clients and partners where this enhances the work.
We assume that this would usually not amount to more than one day per fortnight for people who work full time. We are happy to discuss how this sits in your life. This can be agreed by your line manager.
Please note that our offices are fully wheelchair accessible and that we are committed to making our workplace fully inclusive.
Application guidance
Please submit a CV and cover letter to apply. We are also recruiting a 12 month fixed term Participation Manager role at the same time. If you would like your application to be for both roles, please make this clear when applying.
Applications should be addressed to our Director Evidence and Improvement, Sarah Sweeney, and submitted through CharityJob.
You're welcome to use AI tools to help you prepare your application. However, we encourage you to make sure your application reflects your own voice and experiences. We often see similar AI-generated writing styles, which can make applications less distinctive. As a charity, we're particularly interested in hearing why our mission matters to you and how your values align with ours.
Please specify any access or other requirements of which we need to be aware for the online interview.
The deadline for applications is 5pm on Thursday 30th July.
The interviews will take place in early August on Microsoft Teams. Details of an interview task and interview questions will be emailed to you in advance.
We are committed to diversifying our team in order to broaden the insight and experiences we can draw on, and to do our work more credibly. In particular, we would welcome applications from older people, disabled people and people who have experienced socioeconomic inequality. Our offices are fully accessible and we are a Disability Confident and an LGBT+ friendly employer.

Service Manager – Women’s Recovery Refuge
Location: Burnley – on site.
Hours: Full time, including participation in an on‑call rota
Contract: Permanent
Please note, this is an on-site role only. Due to the nature of our Refuges and Outreach services, it is essential that our teams are present and accessible, enabling us to provide safe, responsive and high-quality support to those who need us most.
This post is open to women only as permitted under Schedule 9, Part 1 of the Equality Act 2010.
About the service
Safenet delivers specialist services across Lancashire and Greater Manchester, supporting adults and children affected by domestic abuse through safe accommodation, community services, recovery support and prevention work.
This role is based at Jane’s Place which provides 24‑hour accommodation and specialist support for women who are experiencing domestic abuse and who want to address substance use, mental ill‑health, or other complex needs as part of their recovery journey.
At Jane’s Place, many of the women we support have been excluded elsewhere. We don’t see “complexity” as a problem to manage, but as a response to trauma – and recovery as something that happens in healthy relationships, community, safety and hope.
This service sits at the intersection of domestic abuse, addiction recovery and mental health, and we are proud to offer a psychologically informed, trauma‑responsive environment where women are supported to rebuild their lives on their own terms.
About the role
As Service Manager, you will lead and be accountable for the refuge and lead a skilled, compassionate team delivering round‑the‑clock support to women and their children.
You will be a values‑led leader who understands recovery, trauma and risk, and who can balance clarity and accountability with warmth, curiosity and care.
You will:
- Lead and support a multidisciplinary refuge team working with women affected by domestic abuse, substance misuse and mental ill‑health
- Create a culture of psychological safety, reflective practice and trauma‑informed care
- Oversee the safe delivery of a 24‑hour residential service, including participation in an on‑call rota
- Ensure high standards of safeguarding, risk management, and housing management
- Work in partnership with recovery services, mental health providers, criminal justice partners and local authorities
- Support staff to hold hopeful, recovery‑focused relationships with women, even where progress is non‑linear
- Use lived experience insights, feedback and data to continually shape and improve the service
This is a hands‑on leadership role for someone who believes deeply in capacity for change and recovery – even in the most challenging circumstances.
We’re looking for someone who…
We welcome applicants from a range of relevant backgrounds; direct refuge experience is not essential, but you do need to bring credibility, confidence and compassion from related fields.
You might come from:
- Substance misuse or addiction recovery services
- Trauma‑informed women’s services
- Mental health or psychologically informed environments (PIE)
- Housing or supported accommodation with complex needs
You will bring:
- Experience of leading and developing staff teams in high‑pressure, emotionally demanding services
- A strong understanding of domestic abuse, recovery, and trauma
- Knowledge of harm reduction, recovery‑focused approaches and systems change
- Confidence managing risk, safeguarding and complex decision‑making
- The ability to hold boundaries without losing humanity
- A commitment to women‑only, feminist and survivor‑informed practice
