MLC Partners are supporting a values-led organisation to recruit an experienced People and Culture Manager to join their small, collaborative People team. This is a broad, hands-on role combining operational HR delivery with leadership, projects, and a strong focus on inclusive people practices.

The Role

Reporting to the Head of People & Culture, you will provide a proactive and professional HR service across the organisation. You will lead on end-to-end recruitment, oversee onboarding and induction, manage key annual HR initiatives, and act as a trusted advisor on employee relations. You will also line-manage two People team members and play a key role in embedding equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging (EDIB) across all people practices.

A key aspect of the role will be supporting and managing organisational change, including restructures and organisational redesign, ensuring these are delivered fairly, compliantly and with clear communication - experience in previously successfully is essential.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and continuously improve end-to-end recruitment processes, working closely with hiring managers and external partners
• Oversee induction and onboarding, ensuring a seamless and values-aligned employee experience
• Lead annual HR projects including appraisals, staff surveys and feedback processes
• Co-design and deliver people leader development initiatives and practical management guidance
• Champion EDIB across recruitment, policies, people initiatives and organisational culture
• Provide expert advice on employee relations matters, supporting managers with complex and sensitive issues
• HRIS literate, with experience in implementing and effectively embedding and monitoring new systems
• Contribute to HR policy development, payroll support and general HR operations
• Ensure compliance with employment law, GDPR, safeguarding requirements and internal policies

About You

You will be an experienced People and Culture professional with strong people management skills and confidence operating across the full employee lifecycle. You are comfortable balancing strategic projects with operational delivery and thrive in a collaborative, values-driven environment.

• CIPD L5 or equivilant experience
• Strong knowledge of employment law and best practice, particularly in change and reorganisation
• Experience leading recruitment and onboarding processes
• Experience managing and developing team members
• Strong analytical and problem-solving capability

The Office of Philanthropic Partnerships and Alumni (OPPA)

Office of Philanthropic Partnerships and Alumni (OPPA) works with a community of global alumni and donors to  deepen their ties with York and each other, and encourage them to support the University through York Giving.  This role is part of the Individual Philanthropy Team, which manages major individual philanthropy and the legacy giving programme, working closely with the other OPPA teams:

Corporate and Foundation Philanthropy: developing long term, strategic partnerships with philanthropic  corporate and foundation supporters.

Fundraising Programmes: managing mass fundraising appeals, crowdfunding campaigns, community  fundraising and student projects.

Operations and Experience: providing business intelligence, information and insight, governance and  stewardship of supporter and alumni relationships, and managing all mass communications with alumni and  supporters. 

York for Life: developing alumni communities, volunteering and alumni engagement programmes in  support of the University’s strategic aims.

About the Role

The role of Philanthropy Manager is to inspire and encourage philanthropic income from major individual donors to the University of York.  You will work to build engagement and involvement of potential major donors and colleagues across the University to develop and deliver a pipeline of significant philanthropic gifts to York Giving’s priority projects. 

You will manage a portfolio of major donor prospects and have responsibility and accountability for fund management and other priority projects for philanthropic funding, including liaising with academic theme coordinators.

This is a demanding and rewarding role that requires resilience and a long term view.  The post holder will work to individual financial cash and pledge targets and KPIs based on meetings, moves, proposals and asks made.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

• Proven experience in a relationship management role, with both internal and external stakeholders.  Ease at working with people and developing personable relationships with a wide range of people.

The postholder will oversee recruitment, delivery and progression impact and outcomes for young people (16–21) from New City College, PRUs, Youth Offending Teams, courts, social workers and local schools, ensuring they are supported into education, apprenticeships, training or work. We are currently exploring expansion possibilities for the long term unemployed, as an alternative to custody and for refugee communities. We seek someone who can help embed the programme in the community college and assist our plans to expand.

You will coordinate the Social Homes for Manchester campaign coalition and implement our strategy for strengthening the housing justice movement in Manchester and across GM. You will lead on organising community workshops and events raising awareness about campaign asks and the Manchester Local Plan consultation process.

You will convene workshops and events focused on building the capacity of a network of ward-based community coalitions to understand housing and planning policy and process. This might include how local development applications are compiled, submitted, decided on; and strategies for ensuring appropriate levels of Section 106 contributions and social rent homes are included in development applications.

You will work with the Social Homes for Manchester Steering Group and community leaders to provide coordination support to at least one neighbourhood planning process and efforts to encourage community-led housing innovations.

You will create a new set of webpages focused on provision of transparent and accessible information on housing need, upcoming developments, and performance against housing targets at ward and city scale.

• You have excellent relationship building skills and experience of working with disadvantaged groups of people to take collective action to achieve positive outcomes for people and communities.
• You enjoy organising activities and events in response to community priorities, interests and needs.
• You have an organised and strategic mindset and the professionalism to foster positive working relationships between community, voluntary, and public sector organisations and representatives.
• You have a basic understanding of housing development and planning application and approval processes and a good understanding of the rationale for increased delivery of sustainable social rent homes.
• You have some experience of web development or website administration and editing combined with the ability to engage digitally excluded groups of people in understanding technical information.

About Social Homes for Manchester (SH4M)

• SH4M is a coalition of community associations, charities, think tanks, academics and social justice organisations focused on accelerating the number of social homes that are created in Manchester by 2030 and ensuring this is done in an environmentally sustainable way.
• Much of our work over the last two years has focused on generating an evidence base, influencing strategy, and set of relationships to facilitate influence, including through convening the Manchester Social Housing Commission which concludes in December 2025.
• SH4M is now focused on implementing a two-year strategy including building a network of citizen coalitions across the city of Manchester with the information and capacity to hold decision-makers and providers to account for accelerated delivery of sustainable social rent homes. This includes taking forward the findings of the Manchester Social Housing Commission.

Working closely with the IDVA Team Leader, you will support both IDVA and therapeutic teams, maintain accurate case records, and ensure all work aligns with best-practice standards.
