Job description

Pilot is a theatre company based in York making productions that tour nationally and internationally. Our innovative productions are primarily aimed at young adults and first time theatre attenders, but our gripping mid and large scale work attracts many different audiences.

In addition to our touring to established venues we make some work that is performed in non theatre spaces where we aim to develop a relationship with our audience that is playful, interactive and participatory.

Pilot is both a Company Limited by Guarantee and a registered educational Charity.

Post: Finance Director (part time, worked flexibly)
Responsible to: Joint Chief Executives and Board of Trustees
Hours of work: variable/as required
Salary: To be paid at an hourly rate – dependent on qualifications and experience

Key Objective

To provide a financial management service to Pilot Theatre to support the Company and Board of Trustees to realise the Business Plan, comply with any financial and legal requirements of the Charity, provide strategic financial advice, provide the Board with timely and accurate financial information and ensure that Pilot Theatre operates as a sustainable organisation.

The Finance Director reports to the Joint Chief Executive, (Executive Producer and Artistic Director) and to the Board of Trustees through the Finance sub-committee.

The following job description reflects the core activities of the post.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

  • Qualified accountant

  • A minimum of three years professional experience including experience of

    financial planning, budgeting and the preparation of management accounts

  • Thorough knowledge of financial systems, procedures and controls

  • Good knowledge of Sage 50, other accounts packages and Excel

    spreadsheets

  • Experience of managing cash flow and cash flow reporting

  • Experience of preparing VAT returns and other statutory returns

  • Experience with the charitable or not for profit sector and meeting the

    statutory reporting requirements of a registered charity

  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a small team

    Desirable Criteria

  • Knowledge of Theatre Tax Relief scheme

  • Interest in creative industries

Start date : February/March 2020

Hours: This is a part time post – with the hours varying according to the cycles of financial planning and reporting. Pilot’s financial year runs from April – March.

Times and days are flexible – ranging from 8 to 40 hours in a month and averaging 15 hours per month.

Employment Status: The post is being offered as a freelance position but can be offered as an employee post – with variable hours if preferred.
