Cancer Support Scotland exists to improve the wellbeing of those affected by cancer, whether they are a person with cancer, a carer or loved one. Our wellbeing services range from professional one-to-one and digital counselling to stress management and self help tools.  In the last year we’ve offered over 6,500 appointments and demand for our services is continuing to rise.  We are seeking a new chair to lead us through the next phase of our strategy and to help us continue to ensure people live well with cancer.  We’re looking for someone who shares our passion for our purpose, has experience in ensuring effective governance and excellent financial acumen and is experienced in leadership.  We meet 4 times a year and have a dedicated group of Trustees who lead 4 sub groups Finance and Risk, Services, Marketing and Fundraising and People.

We’re also keen to invite applications for trustees with digital skills, who have an interest in the services we provide or those with people experience

Role title: Chair of the Board of Trustees
Location: Flexible (travel to London will be required at least once a quarter)

The Chair leads the board, ensuring that it governs Breaking Barriers effectively, in service of our vision and mission. The Chair of Breaking Barriers provides visionary leadership and strategic direction, ensuring that the organisation effectively achieves its mission while adhering to its core values. This pivotal role involves governance oversight, board leadership, executive support, and serving as an ambassador for the organisation.

Key responsibilities:

• Strategic leadership and vision: Guide the organisation with a strategic vision, aligning the board and staff's efforts with the mission. Lead the development and review of long-term strategies to ensure responsiveness to community needs and adaptability to the changing environment.
• Governance and oversight: Ensure effective governance, oversee board operations, and ensure compliance with legal, ethical, and functional responsibilities. Monitor financial performance and adherence to non-profit management best practices.
• Resource mobilisation: Support and participate in fundraising strategies, leveraging networks, and engaging with donors and stakeholders to secure necessary resources for the organisation's work.
• Building and leading the board: Ensure the board comprises members with diverse skills and perspectives. Lead recruitment, orientation, and training of board members and facilitate effective meetings and discussions, ensuring productive governance to advance the purpose and values of the organization.
• CEO support and evaluation: Support and maintain a constructive relationship with the CEO, creating a positive and strong working relationship to jointly set and achieve appropriate targets, staying in regular contact and acting as a sounding board to discuss strategic or staffing issues - coaching, supporting and challenging as necessary. The Survivors Trust is a national membership organisation for specialist voluntary sector rape and sexual abuse support services in the UK and Ireland.  We have 120+ member agencies who are all independent charities providing a range of counselling, support and advocacy services for women, men, children and young people, partners and family members who have been affected by sexual violence of any kind at any time in their lives.

The impact of sexual violence of any form, whether experienced as an adult or as a child, can be devastating and can last a lifetime. Survivors may experience a wide range of physical and mental health problems as a result of being sexually violated, affecting every aspect of their health, lives, relationships, education and work.  We aim to raise awareness of the support survivors need and the work of our Member Agencies in providing this crucial help.

TST is in the unique position of having member agencies that are working with all victims and survivors of sexual violence and sexual abuse.  We are well aware of the issues facing organisations that are delivering trauma informed services and can support them and policy makers and commissioners to understand how services need to be developed and provided.  TST is an independent inspection body for our UKAS accredited service standards for specialist sexual violence organisations.

We provide an accredited Diploma for Independent Sexual Violence Advisors (ISVAs) and CPD accredited workshops.  We have also established a quality mark for educational establishments and corporate organisations, our Trauma Informed Educator and Trauma Informed Employer Quality Marks (TIE).

Chairperson Role, Responsibilities and Attributes

The Chairperson leads the Board of Trustees and sets its agenda in consultation with the CEO. Their role is to enable Trustees to fulfil their responsibilities for overall governance, risk management and strategic direction. The Trustee Board is responsible for proactively engaging with and understanding Belong, its service users and the wider criminal justice landscape. Trustees must always uphold the best interests of Belong’s service users, ensuring that the charity achieves its charitable aims whilst abiding by charity law and other relevant regulations. The Chairperson supports and empowers the CEO to lead the organisation so that it achieves its vision, mission and aims, whilst remaining sustainable and ethical.

In supporting the trustee board and CEO, the Chairperson is responsible for:

• Acting as an ambassador and spokesperson for Belong when appropriate.

About the role

NIDAS supports women and families with all aspects of domestic abuse with confidential support and a variety of bespoke services. NIDAS, located in Mansfield, helps women to stay safe, grow their self-esteem and go on to build happy, healthy relationships. We believe being free from abuse is only the start of the journey.

Role Description

The role of the Chair of Trustees is to give leadership to the board and to make sure the board fulfils its duties and responsibilities. Additionally, the Chair of Trustees works closely with the CEO to support her/him to achieve the aims of NIDAS, and, at times, represent NIDAS at functions, meetings and in the press, and broadcasting media. 

Level of Commitment

• Six-weekly board meetings

Duties

In addition to the responsibilities of a trustee, the Chair of Trustees' duties are to: 

• Provide leadership to the organisation and the board by ensuring that everyone remains focused on the delivery of its charitable purposes in order to deliver the greatest public benefit. 
• To ensure that the Annual Reports and accounts are produced at the end of each year for presentation to the Annual General Meeting and to ensure that they are forwarded to the Charity Commission within the appropriate time period. 
• Chair and facilitate board meetings and the Annual General Meeting encouraging full participation by all attending. 
• Establish sub-committees and working groups to address specific issues/tasks as deemed appropriate by the board, and to call upon specialist skills of his/her fellow Officers and Trustees in relation to those groups, and to participate in such groups as appropriate.

• Represent the organisation at functions and meetings and act as a spokesperson when appropriate.

What you will be expected to do

Overall objectives of the role

• Provide leadership to the Board of Orchestras Live, ensuring it fulfils its responsibilities for governance of the organisation and supports realisation of its vision and mission.
• Work in partnership with the Chief Executive to develop and deliver the vision, mission and strategy of the organisation.
• Act as ambassador for Orchestras Live, helping to shape external relationships that will reinforce its national position and strengthen its ability to secure funding from a wide range of sources to fulfill its mission.

Trustees meet as a full Board at least four times a year and there are a small number of standing committees and working groups. Board meetings and an annual Away Day generally alternate between Leeds and London; as our trustees are based in different parts of the country, meetings are usually hybrid so that trustees may attend either in person, or online when distance and scheduling is an issue. Committees and working groups usually meet on Zoom. Papers are circulated by email in good time for trustees to read them thoroughly before the meeting.

The Chair can expect to commit to the equivalent of up to 30 days per year. This includes monthly meetings (in person or online) with the Chief Executive and regular communication with the Chief Executive and/or Company Secretary as required, as well as time spent in preparation and planning regarding governance and strategy. Full day commitments are rare; the expectation would be mostly for half days and 1-2 hour meetings (generally online). 

In addition, all trustees are expected to attend at least two Orchestras Live activities a year and contribute feedback for our internal evaluation systems.  

Whilst the role is voluntary and unpaid, travel and other appropriate expenses are reimbursed.

Term

We are looking for a Chair for an initial, minimum three-year term; ideally to be renewed for a second term to a total of six years. 

Our Chair is appointed by the Orchestras Live Board of Trustees and is accountable to them.

The Role of Chair

The Chair of Trustees has the same legal responsibilities as other Trustees, but has additional responsibilities assigned by the Board.

Board leadership and meetings

• Chairing meetings of the Board and ensuring that, through the Board and its committees, the Board runs effectively, fulfils its duties and carries out resolutions. Calling special meetings if necessary. Drawing up agendas for meetings with the Chief Executive and Company Secretary.
• Chairing meetings effectively and sympathetically, creating an environment in which all Board members are encouraged to participate and challenge constructively and appropriately. 
• Ensuring that high standards of corporate governance and ethical, professional behaviour are maintained and, as appropriate, introduced to meet changing circumstances and good practice.
• Fostering collaborative and effective relationships between the Board, the Chief Executive and the staff team.

Governance

• With the Board, ensuring that financial controls and systems of management and risk are in place and effectively operated, and that the Board is kept informed in a timely and relevant manner of key issues and opportunities and performance against the business plan.
• To support, challenge and appraise the Chief Executive in managing the organisation, maintaining a balance between artistic and business goals, and ensuring a clear separation between executive and non-executive roles following corporate governance principles.
• Conducting periodic Board effectiveness reviews, ensuring that new Board members are fully inducted and that existing Board members are contributing effectively. 
• Keeping an eye open for conflicts of interest.
• Generally keeping in touch with Trustees to ensure that they feel valued and can make a full contribution to Orchestras Live.

Advocacy

• Representing the Board and organisation to external stakeholders including funders, national and local government politicians, policy makers and the media where appropriate.
• Being a champion for fundraising, helping to identify and develop relationships with potential and existing donors and supporters.
• Encouraging Trustees to play an active role as advocates in their networks, attend events and external meetings when the Chief Executive or senior staff would value this.

Refugee and Migrant Forum of Essex & London (RAMFEL) seeks a dedicated and passionate individual to hold the Board and Executive Team to account in delivering on the organisation's mission and vision, in addition to providing leadership to the Board of Trustees.  

About RAMFEL:

RAMFEL is a charity that supports vulnerable migrants to access justice as well as providing vital support in moments of individual crisis. RAMFEL provide immigration advice (OISC level 3) and generalist advice in a range of areas to support clients. This goes alongside destitution services and support to build a new life in the UK, with ESOL classes and referrals for support accessing the labour market.

 About the Chair Role:

The Chair will be taking on this pivotal role at a crucial time in RAMFEL's growth and development as an organisation. To continue being the trusted voice on refugee and migrant issues, a suitably experienced individual with the right motivation and willingness to lead from the front in an ambassadorial role will be ideal.

 You will be responsible for:

• Holding the Board and Executive Team to account for the Charity's mission and vision, providing leadership to the Board of Trustees.
• Working closely with, and support, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO); ensuring that objectives are set in line with RAMFEL strategy, as well as providing healthy challenge where needed.
• Be responsible for promoting and maintaining a collaborative and inclusive culture among the Board, ensuring that members work together as a team to achieve agreed objectives
• Act as an ambassador and the public face of the charity in partnership with the Chief Executive.

Time commitment

We anticipate the chair will spend approx. 15 hours a month and this will flex depending on the requirements at the time. The Board meets 4 times a year and there will be two away/onsite days a year.

The Vice Chairs’ role is to support the Chair in executing their duties. The Vice Chair continues to fulfil all those duties assumed when he/she became a trustee as outlined in the document The Trustee Board, Role and Responsibilities. The Vice Chair will assume the role of Chair in the absence of the chair. What will you be doing?

What are we looking for?

This vacancy is for a Primary School (ages 3-11).  The school is looking to find a Chair of Governors who is a great communicator and who has empathy and an affinity with children.  Due to gaps on the current board, it would be ideal if you have a finance background but this isn’t essential.  You don’t necessarily need to have been a chair before but any experience you do have would be advantageous.

You must be over 18, but you don’t need to be a parent or have children of school age. Often, it’s the outside perspective you can bring that a school needs. Professional experience in areas such as safe guarding, change management, and leadership skills are all useful to a school. Soft skills such as communication and problem solving are also great additions.

Governors make decisions that affect schools for years to come. Chair of Governors work in partnership with Head Teachers and the Senior Management Team to help deliver the best possible education, and help children realise their expectations and aspirations.

Our recent impact survey found that our volunteers bring £9.9 million worth of value to schools each year, and 9/10 volunteers would recommend being a governor to a friend.

As a chair of governors, you will be encouraged to visit the school to gain an understanding of the culture and ethos and to get the most out of the role. You’ll also have the opportunity to meet children, parents, and teachers, and see the impact of your work first-hand.

Tamasha is seeking its next Chair or Co-Chairs. This is a wonderful opportunity to lead the Board of one of the UK’s leading Global Majority (ethnically diverse) theatre companies.

Tamasha is looking for someone who is passionate about arts and creativity and who has lived experience (or a significant understanding) of the challenges and opportunities facing Global Majority artists and communities in the UK today. The Chair will be a change-maker and collaborative leader, able to support the Trustees, Artistic Director and Executive Director.  The Chair will be a strong and visible advocate for Tamasha, able to negotiate and influence across a range of sectors to support its work.

We are looking for a Chair to steer our Board of Trustees, providing strategic oversight and governance. The Chair will be actively leading on shaping the future of our Hall, developing the business and setting its strategic direction to ensure financial viability for the future.

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with a wide variety of skills who can be an enabler to grow the business and build on the progress we have made to date. Ideally you will have experience in leadership, management and organisational development. Experience in the voluntary sector, community facilities or running community projects would be helpful.

We are a village hall in heart of the Emersons Green community, offering rooms for hire to local businesses, charities, voluntary groups and individuals for recreation or business use. We also organise and run events for the local community such as seasonal fairs, family entertainment events, seniors' activities, childrens' craft and activity sessions and discos. Our village hall is at the centre of the Emersons Green community. As a large village hall, we are looking to the future to ensure that we can be financially viable in these challenging times.

The Board of Trustees is the governing body of our charity. It is where final decisions are made. The Board’s key role is to make sure that the charity is successful in working towards its aims and objectives. The Board oversees the management of the hall and its staff and is responsible for the larger decisions, keeping an eye on the budgets and generally helping to ensure the halls continued success. This may include approving improvements to the hall, enacting policies, supporting the Hall Manager and the staff in dealing with hirers and staging community events and activities, and planning and monitoring progress.

The day to day running of the hall is dealt with by the Hall Manager, with the support of staff, the Treasurer and Company Secretary.

We have 6 scheduled meetings a year and then usually a few ad hoc ones to look at budgets and staff meetings. These are usually in the evenings. The regular meetings tend to last about 2.5 hours.
