Trustees are unpaid volunteers, though reasonable expenses may be reimbursed. Trustees carry personal legal responsibilities but are usually indemnified by the organisation, except in cases of misconduct or breach of duty.
Time commitment and location
The board meet once, every three months for approximately 1.5 hours. Any other involvement would add up to about 6 hours per month. The meetings take place virtually on zoom. In addition to the minimum commitment you may like to be part of working groups that look at particular areas for example budgeting. West London Welcome (WLW) is a community centre and registered charity run for and with refugees, migrants and people seeking asylum, working together with local people to provide a safe, positive experience of community to reduce isolation, build inclusion and confidence, and challenge injustice.
Each week at WLW brings unique joys and challenges. We support hundreds of people from 70 different countries with a range of immigration statuses, providing English classes, advice, casework, hot food, a foodbank, clothing, childcare for those in classes, and social and creative activities. We take a holistic approach to support the needs of our members, from the practical and social to the emotional and playful.

Our ongoing work with people with lived experience of seeking refuge and migration
At WLW we are striving to ensure our staff, volunteers and Board of Trustees are reflective of the communities we work with.
Our staff team includes five people with lived experience of refuge or migration, all of whom work in a wide variety of ways on a weekly basis with the refugees, migrants and asylum-seeking people who come to our centre. Our Board of Trustees includes one person who we supported through the asylum system, and five of our nine Trustees have lived experience of refuge or migration.
Amongst our 100+ volunteers, many are our beneficiaries whom we also support, who work collaboratively with us to run our centre. A fifth of our volunteers have lived experience of refuge or migration. From cooking and organising our foodbank to running our creative activities and translating for our advice team, this collaborative work ensures our community members have a stake in the way we practically run our organisation day-to-day and have a sense of ownership over the space.
We are now looking to recruit a new Trustee with lived experience of seeking refuge or migration.
The Role
We are looking to recruit a trustee with some or all of the following skills and/or experience:

Lived experience of the challenges of seeking refuge or migrating to the UK from another country. We welcome applicants who have either moved to the UK recently, or decades ago.

Refugee/migrant sector experience – experience of volunteering or working within the refugee and migrant NGO sector in the UK or another country. This could include either volunteering or working directly for an NGO, or in another related capacity such as with a campaign.

Somebody who is passionate about the work of West London Welcome and supporting people in our community.
It is not necessary for applicants to have previous experience of being a Trustee.
Trustee roles are unpaid voluntary positions, but we offer travel and other relevant expenses.
Trustee Duties
The general duties of a trustee are to:

Ensure that WLW complies with its governing document (its constitution), charity law and any other relevant legislation or regulations.

Ensure that WLW pursues its objects as defined in its governing document.

Ensure WLW applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objects, i.e. it must not spend money on activities which are not included in the objects, however worthwhile they appear to be.

Contribute actively to the Board’s role in giving firm strategic direction to WLW, setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets.

Safeguard the good name and values of WLW.

Minimum Time Commitment

The Board generally holds meetings at least four times per year. These normally take place in the early evening and last approximately two hours. There may also be additional occasional trainings.

Trustees should also support WLW at informal fundraising and other events as part of their ambassadorial role as well as making make regular visits to the WLW centre.

This is a voluntary position, but trustees can claim out of pocket expenses such as those incurred in travelling to meetings.

Occasionally quick decisions on urgent matters need to be made. Trustees should be available via WhatsApp as well as at regular board meetings to provide needed input/advice.

Would you like to use your skills and experience to help us end poverty in later life?
Independent Age is the only national charity focused solely on improving the lives of people facing financial hardship in later life. This year, we answered more than 20,000 calls, emails and webchats via our helpline and identified over £6.5 million in entitlements not being received. We have awarded £3 million in grants, enabling local organisations to reach even more older people living in financial hardship, including our newest fund supporting those living in rural and coastal areas. We also successfully campaigned for the Winter Fuel Payment to be restored to a large number of older people who rely on it, and to improve protections for older renters through the Renters’ Rights Act and the Housing (Scotland) Act.
We are looking to appoint several new Trustees to our Board. We are interested in hearing from people who are concerned about the growing impact of poverty in later life on our society, and can bring us any of the following skills and experience:
• finance
• fundraising
• brand / marketing / engagement
• business development / transformation / innovation / technology.
Every day at Independent Age, we hear from older people who don’t have enough money for a decent standard of living. While they are resourceful, careful and resilient, and employ many tactics to make their low-income work for them, life is hard.
The people who engage with us are part of a group of two million older people living in poverty and a further million living with precarious financial security. Concerningly, our research shows that this number could rise to four million by 2040, without effective policy interventions. This projection must not become a reality.
Certain groups of people aged 65 and over are at greater risk of financial hardship, including one person households, women, people from racially minoritised groups, private renters, carers and people with long-term conditions or disabilities. We particularly encourage applications from people who have backgrounds, characteristics or perspectives that align with any of these priority groups. We’d also like to encourage applications from candidates outside the south-east of England and, in particular, from Scotland.
Previous trustee experience is not necessary because you would be joining a strong, experienced Board and we can provide mentoring and support. The time commitment will be around 1-1.5 days a month on average, focused around the quarterly cycle of board and committee meetings. Trustee roles are not paid. However, we want to help overcome the barriers some people might face to becoming a trustee. We pay reasonable travel, accommodation, subsistence and the cost of care provision for children and dependents when acting on behalf of the charity. Some of these costs can be paid upfront by the charity, if needed. We also pay reasonable costs associated with attending the initial interview.

Multiple essential services are housed under one roof including:
- Safe and supportive youth clubs where our young people can thrive, in sports, music, art, outdoor and other activities.
- Experienced youth worker mental health support in schools and one-to-one sessions for young people who are struggling + outreach in the town, skatepark and surrounding villages
- A community hub, bringing people together in local social, sports and craft groups + a baby and parent group, providing a safe warm space, and giving easy access to advice services.

The Chapter comprises members who are lay and ordained, executive and non-executive as set out in the Cathedral’s Constitution. The non-executive members provide constructive challenge, input and support to the Cathedral’s strategic direction and operational implementation.
Commitment
Meetings: The Chapter currently meets formally 8 times per year (including two away days), usually for four hours on a weekday morning. Papers are received in advance and all members of the Chapter are expected to have read papers and be prepared to contribute as needed to discussion.
The Chapter does not normally meet in August. Expenses can be claimed for attendance at meetings or carrying out functions on behalf of the Chapter. Non-executive members of the Chapter will serve as lay canons of the Cathedral (or honorary canons if ordained), having the right to the title of ‘Canon’ and of being assigned a stall in the Cathedral’s 14th Quire. Non-executive members of the Chapter are required to adhere to the Chapter Member / Trustee Code of Conduct
Responsibilities of the Chapter:
A non-executive member of the Chapter shall take a full part in the discussions and decision-making of the Chapter as it fulfils its statutory responsibilities:
- to order the worship and promote the mission of the Cathedral;
- to formulate proposals in connection with the strategic direction and mission of the Cathedral;
- to manage all property vested in the Cathedral and the income accruing from it;
- to ensure that necessary repairs and maintenance of the Cathedral and its contents and other buildings and monuments are carried out;
- to attend to all matters concerning the appointment of staff to the Cathedral;
- to prepare an annual budget for the Cathedral;
- to prepare an annual report and accounts;
- to keep under review the Constitution and Statutes of the Cathedral;
- to ensure legal and regulatory compliance;
- to meet safeguarding requirements and ensure best practice;
- to exercise the power if necessary to provide for the incorporation of limited companies for the better management of the Cathedral.
Contributing to the Cathedral's Life, Worship and Mission:
A non-executive member of the Chapter shall contribute the skills and experience they bring to the Cathedral as opportunity allows, for example:
- by serving on such incorporated limited companies as the Chapter may establish, on sub-committees of the Chapter and on any working groups of the Chapter as may be created;
- by attending and contributing to worship at the Cathedral;
- by contributing to the ministry of hospitality offered at the Cathedral and to such other Cathedral activity as may be appropriate;
- by acting as an advocate for the Chapter of Worcester Cathedral within and beyond the Church of England, across the city, the Deanery and the Diocese of Worcester and the wider region;
- by serving as a Canon of the Cathedral, being seen and present as such, as may be appropriate;
- by providing critical friendship and constructive challenge to Chapter colleagues, the Chief Officers and the wider Senior Executive Team.
In general:
- to ensure their own compliance with the Chapter’s policies and procedures, and contribute to the review and development of policy and practice;
- to promote and uphold the Cathedral’s reputation and good standing at all times.
Person specification
Essential
- Communicant member of the Church of England (within the meaning given in Rule 83(2) of the Church Representation Rules), or a communicant member of a Church which is not in communion with the Church of England but subscribes to the doctrine of the Holy Trinity
- Committed to the Cathedral’s Christian vision, values, mission and ministry.
- Able to carry out legal duties as set out in the Charity Commission’s ‘CC3 - The Essential Trustee’ and make decisions in accordance with the guidance provided in ‘CC27 – Decision-making for charity trustees’.
- Willing to follow the Chapter’s Code of Conduct and to uphold all of the Chapter’s safeguarding responsibilities.
- Willing to complete appropriate safeguarding training and DBS checking.
- Demonstrable strategic leadership and governance skills; previous experience volunteering as a trustee is welcome but not essential.
- Willingness to attend to professional personal development including undertaking training.
- Able to commit a minimum of eight hours a month to attending Chapter meetings (or other business on behalf of the Chapter) including preparation for meetings.
Desirable
- A professional background or significant experience of working in one (or more) of the following areas:
- strategic human resources management
- property management / development
- strategic planning
ELIGIBILITY
The Chapter members must be eligible to be trustees under the Charities Act. The Chapter members may not act as a trustee if they are disqualified unless authorised to do so by a waiver from the Commission. The reasons for disqualification, issued by the Commission include:
- being bankrupt or having an individual voluntary arrangement (IVA);
- having an unspent conviction for certain offences;
- being on the Sex Offenders Register

1. Organisational Information:
1.1 The Walton Firs Foundation is a Surrey-based registered charity (Charity registration number: 1113830), and a company limited by guarantee without share capital (Companies House registration number: 05695208). The Foundation’s charitable mission is to support young people’s personal development and social inclusion, through enabling their engagement in outdoor education, vocational training, and volunteering programmes. Since its establishment in 2006, the Foundation has enabled over 250,000 young people from across the south-east of England to learn, develop and enjoy in nature, including many whose backgrounds and circumstances have previously restricted their access to the natural environment. The Foundation is a recipient of The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, in recognition of its developmental impact on the lives of young people. In 2024/25, the Foundation recorded a total income of £852,977, and a net trading surplus of £81,286.
1.2 The Foundation owns and manages Walton Firs Activity Centre, a fifty-acre facility that provides forty land-based outdoor education activities and residential capacity to accommodate up to 1,100 young people. The activity centre is commissioned by a wide range of children’s and youth service providers and by primary, secondary and SEND schools to deliver high quality curriculum enhancement programmes and outdoor learning activities. In addition, the activity centre directly-delivers a range of services for local young people, including holiday and afterschool activity projects, work experience programmes, and The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. In 2024/25, Walton Firs Activity Centre delivered 479 service commissions and engaged 32,000 young people in outdoor learning activities and programmes.
1.3 Currently, the Foundation has six trustees / directors, who work with the company secretary under the leadership of the chairman of the board, to provide oversight and scrutiny of, and support and guidance to, the chief executive officer and the activity centre management team. A group of twenty-five charity patrons provide overview over the trustees / directors.

2. Role Purpose:
2.1 The Trustees / Directors of the Walton Firs Foundation serve simultaneously as a charity trustees and as company directors, and manage statutory duties under the Companies Act 2006. They are responsible for the strategic direction, operational governance, and financial status of the organisation, and work closely with the chief executive officer to ensure the Foundation delivers its charitable objects and activities for the public benefit, in compliance with the Charity Commission’s regulations and company law. The role’s key accountabilities include ensurance of the Foundation’s capacity to manage high-quality outdoor education experiences and facilities for young people, whilst complying with all relevant legislative and regulatory requirements.
