Chair of the Board — United St Saviour's Charity
For almost 500 years, we've supported Southwark's communities. Now we're looking for a new Chair to help lead our next chapter — including delivering the RIBA Stirling Prize-winning legacy of Appleby Blue into a bold ten-year strategy.
United St Saviour's Charity is a place-based community investor in Southwark, providing almshouses, grant-funding and community programmes that build resilience and connection across the borough. Over the last decade we've nearly doubled our housing provision and delivered Appleby Blue — a social housing development for older people that went on to win the RIBA Stirling Prize, the UK's most prestigious architecture award.
This role is for you if:

As Chair, you'll lead our Board of Trustees and work in close partnership with our Chief Executive, Martyn Craddock, providing support, guidance and constructive challenge to help the organisation deliver its strategic plan. You'll be joining at a pivotal moment: we're scaling up our housing development pipeline, delivering a new Community Investment Strategy for 2025–2030, and increasingly being asked to share what we've learned with other boroughs and housing providers as our national influence grows.
Location and time commitment
Based in the London Borough of Southwark — Board and committee meetings take place at our offices and almshouses. This is a voluntary role (reasonable expenses met) requiring approximately 2–3 days a month, including four Board meetings a year, a Strategy and Reflection Day, and membership of one to two committees.

St Basils is looking for a new Non-Exec Director / Trustee with Marketing & Communications experience to join our Board
About Us
St Basils works with young people aged 16-25 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, to enable them to find and keep a home, grow their confidence, develop their skills, increase opportunities and ultimately prevent homelessness.
We help just over 4,000 young people each year across the West Midlands, with services in Birmingham, Coventry, Sandwell, Solihull, Warwickshire and Worcestershire. Our services range from providing supported accommodation to outreach, advice, support, employability and engagement services to help young people regain the stability they need to rebuild their lives, gain skills, confidence and employment and move on. The aim is to help them successfully break the ‘cycle of homelessness’ so that they can go on to experience a bright, fulfilling future and never return to a state where they are at risk of homelessness again.
About our Board
We are a registered provider of social housing, a charity and a company limited by guarantee, meaning our Board members are both Directors and Trustees.
To navigate our challenging regulatory landscape, we need to be tightly governed. At the heart of this is a Board with the right knowledge, values, skills and diversity, all whilst working towards our vision that homelessness should not be part of growing up.
As a member of St Basils’ Board, you will be a guardian of St Basils’ charitable purpose. You will be responsible for holding the Senior Leadership Team to account through constructive challenge and support, and for ensuring St Basils’ strategic priorities are met.
You will form part of St Basils’ governance framework, providing oversight of key business areas, such as business planning, safeguarding, risk, finance, health and safety, EDI and business development.
Our Board is made up of 14 members, 2 of which are designated for young people who have lived experience of homelessness and / or St Basils’ services.
St Basils has adopted the RACE Equality Code and is actively seeking applications from those from Black communities to ensure our Board is reflective of both the young people that we serve and our dedicated workforce.
About the Role
We are looking for a voluntary Director / Trustee with expertise in marketing, communications and/or public engagement to increase the reach of our campaigns. Our new Board member will need to strong networking and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to open doors and build relationships.
As our Marketing & Communications Board Member, you will:
· Ensure marketing initiatives align with the organisation’s goals and regulatory requirements.
· Support St Basils’ PR and marketing initiatives by bringing knowledge of current marketing tools
· Help identify opportunities to increase the visibility and impact of St Basils’ campaigns.
· Leverage personal and professional networks to enhance the charity’s reach, partnerships and fundraising potential.
· Work closely with the Director of Income Generation & Value Capture to ensure St Basils’ marketing and communications strategies are being implemented effectively.
Our new Director / Trustee will sit on our Business Support & Audit Committee which oversees central functions, including Finance, HR, Fundraising and Marketing. This committee meets virtually, one a quarter.
Although the role is voluntary, reasonable expenses will be paid for costs incurred in undertaking the role.
About You
You will be an experienced professional in marketing, communications, PR or brand strategy, ideally with experience in the youth or homelessness sectors.
You will demonstrate sound judgement and be able to challenge confidently and constructively, although you do not need to have Board experience.
Understanding of governance and the responsibilities of a charity trustee is desirable, but training will be provided.
You will work within the principles of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion and understand the needs of the diverse young people we serve.
You will put the needs of young people first, be passionate about ending youth homelessness and share our mission, vision and principles.
Time Commitment
You will need to be able to attend the majority of Board and Committee meetings, one of each is held each quarter (8 meetings total per year). Each meeting will last around 2 hours and will normally be held late afternoon/early evening (usually 4pm – 6pm). Board meetings are held in person at St Basils’ Head Office in Birmingham, and Committee meetings are held virtually via Microsoft Teams. The dates for meetings are set by calendar year, towards the end of the previous year.
Meeting papers will be shared via an online portal one week in advance of the meeting to allow for sufficient preparation time.
A Board away day is held each year, usually October, and every other year this includes an overnight stay. This will be fully paid for by St Basils.
We encourage Board members to visit our accommodation services to deepen understanding of our work and support effective governance and decision-making. We would like all Board members to make 2 visits a year if possible.
All travel expenses incurred in attending Board meetings / conducting site visits will be reimbursed by St Basils.
What’s in it for you?
We offer a series of essential online training courses (for example GDPR, Cyber Security, EDI, Safeguarding, Risk Management) and the opportunity to do additional online or in-person training, such as Psychologically Informed Environment training. As part of our commitment to race equality, we provide mandatory Anti-Racism training for all staff and Board members.
You will be part of a knowledgeable and supportive Board and have the opportunity to work alongside young people with lived experience.
You will have the guidance of a knowledgeable Chair to support your development as a Director / Trustee, and you will have access to St Basils’ Senior Leadership Team to help you fulfil your role.
St Basils is a learning organisation and therefore we are able to support and develop Board members who are new to the role. In addition, St Basils has membership with the Board Development Agency, which provides our Board Members with access to webinars and development tools specific to housing sector Boards.
Being a Director / Trustee at St Basils is more than just attending meetings – if you would like to contribute to an organisation that has young people at its core, where you can visibly see the difference you are making, then this is the role for you.

We welcome early applications and will interview on a rolling basis.

Founding Director of People, Culture & HR Innovation
Help us fix HR today — and design what HR becomes tomorrow.
We are looking for an experienced HR leader who is ready to do something very different.
Someone who understands HR, but also sees where it has become too bureaucratic, too process-driven and too disconnected from the creativity, ambition and humanity of the people it is supposed to support.
This is not a conventional HR management role.
This is a high-stakes founding opportunity to help rebuild our HR function from the ground up — while working with a team to design an entirely new, people-first way of working that could challenge the status quo.
The opportunity
Our immediate mission is practical: clean up, strengthen and professionalise our existing HR department.
That means looking honestly at what currently exists, identifying what works, what does not, what is missing and what has become unnecessarily complicated — then putting the right structures, policies, processes, governance and people practices in place.
But that is only the beginning.
Alongside fixing today's HR function, you will help us design the blueprint for the next generation of HR: an open-source HR platform and new way of working designed around people, creativity, innovation, development, fairness, accountability and better organisational culture.
We believe HR should be more than policies, procedures and risk management.
People are not processes.
Organisations should be places where people can think, create, challenge, develop, contribute and do meaningful work — while still having strong structures, accountability and professional standards.
We want to explore what HR could look like if we designed it around that principle from the beginning.
Two connected missions
1. Fix and strengthen HR today
You will initially help us:
Review the existing HR function, structures and practices
Identify gaps, weaknesses, risks and unnecessary bureaucracy
Establish appropriate HR policies, procedures and governance
Strengthen recruitment and onboarding
Improve employee experience and people support
Develop better approaches to performance, learning and development
Ensure appropriate employment practices and HR compliance
Create systems that can scale as the organisation grows
Help build a strong people and culture foundation
2. Help invent HR for tomorrow
At the same time, you will work with the founding team to explore and develop:
A blueprint for a new open-source HR platform
A people-first approach to organisational design
New approaches to employee voice and participation
Better models for creativity, innovation and collaboration
New approaches to leadership and personal development
Psychological safety and healthy organisational culture
Fairness, accountability and transparency
The appropriate use of technology and AI in HR
New ways of measuring organisational health and employee experience
A framework that other organisations could potentially adopt, adapt and build upon
The ambition is not simply to improve HR within one organisation.
It is to ask:
What would HR look like if we were brave enough to redesign it properly?
You will be joining at a stage where there is significant work to do, significant problems to solve and significant things yet to be built.
That is precisely what makes the opportunity different.
For the right person, this could become a paid founding leadership position as the organisation develops, funding is secured and the wider structure is operationalised.
We are looking for someone who sees the potential in that journey rather than simply looking for an established job description and a finished organisation to step into.
This is an opportunity to:
build something.
lead something.
invent something.
leave a legacy.
If you have spent years watching organisations operate in ways that you knew could be better — and quietly thinking “someone should really change this” — this may be your opportunity to actually be one of the people who does.
You will not be doing it alone.
You will have the opportunity to build and work alongside a founding team, bring ideas into reality, test new approaches, learn from what does and does not work, and help shape something that can grow beyond its original founders.
The legacy opportunity
We are particularly interested in people who want their work to mean something beyond another position on a CV.
The long-term ambition is to create something that can be shared, developed and potentially adopted by others.
If successful, the HR model you help create could become part of a much larger body of work — something that demonstrates that organisations can be both high-performing and deeply human.
That is the opportunity.
Not to inherit someone else's HR system.
To help invent a better one.
Who we are looking for
You may be an experienced:
HR Director
Head of People
People & Culture Director
HR Transformation Leader
Organisational Development Leader
Senior HR Consultant
HR strategist or practitioner
You should have substantial practical HR experience and understand the realities of employment, governance, organisational risk and people management.
But experience alone is not enough.
We want someone who:
Thinks critically about conventional HR
Is comfortable challenging established thinking
Can distinguish between necessary structure and unnecessary bureaucracy
Is genuinely people-centred
Understands organisational design and culture
Can move between strategy and practical implementation
Has an interest in innovation, technology and AI
Is capable of building systems rather than simply operating them
Can work collaboratively with founders and other senior leaders
Is comfortable working in an environment where not everything has already been figured out
Wants to create, experiment and improve — not simply maintain the status quo
Most importantly, you should want to build something.
What we can offer
This is initially a voluntary founding leadership opportunity during Phase 1, as the organisation develops its foundations, structures, funding and operating model.
However, the intention is that the right founding leaders can have the opportunity to progress into substantive paid leadership positions as the organisation grows and the relevant funding and operational capacity are secured.
This is therefore an opportunity to get involved early, have genuine influence over the direction of the organisation and potentially grow with what you help build.
You will have the opportunity to:
Shape the HR function from an early stage
Work directly with the founding leadership team
Influence organisational culture from the beginning
Help develop an original HR model
Build a team around the work as the organisation grows
Contribute to something with potential beyond the organisation itself
Establish yourself as a founding leader in an emerging model of people and organisational practice
Progress into a paid founding leadership positionh
