Job description

Slough and East Berkshire Church of England Multi Academy Trust (SEBMAT)

Non-executive director/ Trustee role

Could you be an Academy Ambassador in Slough?  SEBMAT seeks three non-executives/directors to join its board.

The Academy Ambassadors programme brings the expertise of the business world onto boards at multi-academy trusts (MATs) throughout the country to raise standards of education and improve the life chances of young people, which is critical to our social and economic success.

The opportunity

SEBMAT comprises three primary and two secondary schools across Slough and East Berkshire. It has plans to grow steadily at a sustainable rate with the emphasis on providing high quality and enterprising education for the communities it serves. The Trust seeks three new non-executives to join its Board of Members and Board of Directors/Trustees:

· A Chair of the Board of Directors/Trustees;

· A Non-Executive Director on the Board of Directors/Trustees;

· And a Member to join the Board of Members.

Board Meetings are held in Slough. Applicants of all faiths and of none are welcomed.

The board seeks business leaders with expertise in

  • CFO/Finance
  • Growth Management
  • Corporate Governance
  • Chairing

As a key member of the board you will support the trust in achieving the following over the next 12 – 24 months:

  1. Growth - Continuing to expand the Trust (up to approximately 8 to 10 schools in the longer term) to maximise economies of scale, increase performance and make use of exemplary central services to facilitate schools focusing on pupils' educational achievement and well-being.
  2. COVID-19 - Stabilise and restore the Trust following COVID-19. This necessitates addressing the needs of pupils with regards to achievement and well-being; maximise the skills of staff; address financial challenges and restore income.
  3. Strengthen governance – The Trust plans to increase the numbers and diversity of Members, Directors, Chairs and Vice Chairs of Governors.

What’s involved?

Board governance in education is a strategic, ‘eyes on, hands off’ commitment which typically involves attending c. six board meetings per year/6-8 hours’ time per month.

You will be responsible for:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • Holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management of staff; and
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent

 As an Academy Ambassador, you will join our Ambassadors alumni network which provides resources, guidance, networking events and webinars to support you in your role. All roles are pro bono.
