Job description

The UK Capercaillie population is in serious decline. It's possible that there are now less than 1,000 Capercaillie left in the UK. And almost all of them live in the Cairngorms National Park. Action in the National Park is therefore critical to prevent extinction in the UK.

Capercaillie Advisory Assistant
Reference number: A0430820
Location: Inverness
Salary: £21,718 to £24,293 Per Annum pro rata
Hours: Part time, 22.5 hours per week
Contract: 3 Years

The postholder will support the Capercaillie Advisory Officer in delivering conservation action as part of the Cairngorms Capercaillie Project. This is an innovative project, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, that is broadening capercaillie conservation to put communities in the Cairngorms National Park in the driving seat and giving them the confidence and ability to participate, identify and own solutions to help Capercaillie. The postholder will have the opportunity to work alongside other project team members as well as local communities, land managers and volunteers to carry out this essential conservation work.

The postholder will be supporting the Capercaillie Advisory Officer's work with land managers to create and improve more Capercaillie habitat. A key area of work will involve monitoring Capercaillie to inform conservation action, including completing fieldwork to support the development of new methodologies as part of a pilot genetic lek survey.

Candidates should be prepared for lone-working during fieldwork in remote locations and have experience of working in ecology and undertaking surveys. This role requires good organisational skills and the ability to communicate with a wide range of audiences. Knowledge of forestry and upland management and GIS would be desirable although not essential. This part time post is a 3-year contract fully funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
