Role Overview

Starlight has a long and successful track record of delivering high-profile, high-value special events, including the prestigious Blenheim Ball, Newbury Race Day, and until recently, the Highclere Clay Pigeon Shoot. These events are supported by influential committees and have played a critical role in raising income, stewarding donors and connecting supporters with our purpose.

With a gap in our Philanthropy team and maternity cover needed until around May next year, this 9-month fixed-term role exists to lead, develop and deliver Starlight’s flagship events at a senior level. Immediate responsibilities are for the Starlight Health Play Awards a key stewardship event in October; and the development of a Royal Palace Event to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Starlight likely to be in November. There is also the opportunity to shape the Starlight Event Strategy, with the development of a new event building on the success of our Newbury Race Days and the development of our biennial activity with the Blenheim Ball Committee.

This is a senior, delivery-focused role designed for an experienced events professional who can hit the ground running. Working closely with the Starlight Team and Committees, you will bring leadership, strategic judgement and outstanding project management to ensure Starlight events continue to excel in reputation, income and supporter experience.

Your role

As a Philanthropy Manager, you will be tasked with focus on the following areas:

• Growing and managing a portfolio of up to 70-90 major donors, to solicit and close five, six and seven figure gifts
• Building compelling cases for support that inspire and align with donors’ interests and identified needs
• Developing and hosting a small number of engagement, prospecting, and recognition events
• Providing excellent customer service and stewardship

We’re looking for someone who loves meeting people and has a natural aptitude for selling and prospecting. You’ll thrive on developing relationships, inspiring others in the work of the RNLI. Your great communication skills will allow you to flex your style to a wider range of audiences, whether colleagues, senior stakeholders, donors or prospects. You’ll be self-motivated working as part of a remote team and be comfortable working outside regular office hours and travelling occasionally within the rest of the UK and Ireland as the job demands.

To be considered as a Philanthropy Manager, you will need:

• Ideally you will be able to have easy access to your key geographical areas highlighted above
• Relevant or transferable experience of account managing and developing and maintaining excellent relationships with individuals. You excel at Customer Service.
• Experience of working with stakeholders at all levels both internal and external, securing and managing meetings with senior stakeholders, flexing style to the audience.
• Excellent numerical skills and ability to prepare financial information, and ability to discuss and present complex information, and the ability to communicate with passion and authority

The Major Giving team is made up of corporate partnerships, philanthropy and trusts and raises £6 million a year from our partners, funders and donors. It is part of the Income Generation directorate, which includes Individual Giving, Organisational Insight and Supporter Relations.

About the role

It is an exciting time to join the British Museum. Key Responsibilities

As Fundraising Manager, you will:

• Develop and implement a 3–5 year fundraising strategy aligned with ISH's strategic objectives.

• Build a diverse fundraising portfolio across trusts and foundations, major donors, corporate partnerships, alumni, community fundraising and international philanthropy.

• Identify, cultivate and steward major donors and strategic partners.

• Lead the development of compelling funding applications and grant proposals.

• Secure significant income from trusts, foundations, government bodies and corporate sponsors.

• Develop donor stewardship and recognition programmes that encourage long-term support.

• Work collaboratively with Marketing, Alumni Relations, Events and CRM colleagues to deliver integrated fundraising campaigns.

• Establish fundraising KPIs, monitor performance and report regularly to the CEO, Senior Management Team and Board of Trustees.

• Manage and develop the Fundraising Assistant while fostering a collaborative fundraising culture across the organisation.

• Ensure all fundraising activity complies with charity law, the Code of Fundraising Practice and data protection legislation.

About You

You will be a motivated fundraising professional with a proven track record of securing significant philanthropic income and developing successful fundraising strategies.

As Partnerships and Philanthropy Manager, you will be responsible for raising income through philanthropy, trusts and foundations, major donors and strategic corporate partnerships. Working closely with the senior leadership team, you will identify new funding opportunities, strengthen existing partnerships and ensure communications support fundraising objectives. You will also lead on donor engagement and stewardship activities and line managing the Communications Officer.

To be considered for this role you will need: 

• Proven experience of securing income from at least two of the following areas: trusts and foundations, corporate partnerships or philanthropy.
• Experience of developing successful funding applications, proposals and donor reports.
• Experience of building and managing external relationships that lead to income generation or strategic partnership development.

• Strong written communication skills, with the ability to write clear, persuasive and tailored proposals and reports.
• Excellent relationship management and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence a wide range of stakeholders.

About the Role

The Senior Philanthropy Executive exists to secure sustainable, high value income from major donors (high net-worth individuals and family trusts) in support of the organisation’s strategic priorities and long-term financial sustainability.

The role is accountable for building, converting and stewarding a strong pipeline of high value funding opportunities, translating organisational priorities into compelling, fundable propositions, and ensuring effective relationships with major donors.
