Key Responsibilities
Strategic

Our work across Newcastle
Volunteering Matters play a vital role supporting volunteering in Newcastle. Since 2005, we have been operating Volunteer Centre Newcastle (VCN). This service provides a wide range of support around all things volunteering to 1250+ charities, organisations, and groups locally. Each year, we also support 2500+ members of the public who are interested in volunteering and need support to get started. We also lead the Home from Hospital and Community Support project where volunteers support older people with their transition home following a hospital admission.
In early 2025, we launched the Good Neighbours Newcastle project funded by Newcastle City Council. We deliver this project alongside our delivery partner organisation, Search Newcastle, with a second partner organisation scheduled to join in early 2026.
Good Neighbours project
We would all like to live in a place that has a sense of community, where people look out for their neighbours. The Good Neighbours project aims to foster a feeling of positive wellbeing and independence for those who may be socially isolated, or who don’t have many people around them, giving that “little bit of help”.
The project helps people in the community feel safe, supported, and more able to live an independent life, whilst preventing, reducing and delaying the need for formal support through Adult Social Care. It also provides people the opportunity to volunteer a little time, in a flexible way, to make a difference in their own community. We know volunteering can lead to enhanced skills, and positive wellbeing. Volunteers provide practical or social support, completing “one-off’ or short-term tasks, supporting a neighbour. This includes tasks like collecting essentials, driving someone to a GP appointment, helping with odd jobs around the house, light gardening, or checking in with someone for a cuppa and chat.
Role Purpose
We are looking for a talented, dynamic, and professional Project Manager to join our team in Newcastle. The right candidate would be someone with excellent knowledge of “best practice” in Volunteer Management and with experience of establishing new and exciting volunteering programmes.
This is a senior role within our Newcastle team so it is essential that the postholder is agile, can work flexibly, is an excellent communicator, and can build strong working relationships with a range of people.

Platform’s North Sea Workers’ Transition project is building towards a managed phase-out of oil and gas extraction in the UK North Sea. We’re organising for an energy industry that protects the rights and livelihoods of the current oil and gas workforce and directs wealth back to communities, especially those impacted by industrial change.
We have been working with offshore oil and gas workers and their unions for 5+ years. In 2023, we published a groundbreaking set of 10 demands for a just energy transition away from fossil fuels co-created with offshore workers: Our Power: offshore workers’ demands for a just energy transition. Since publishing the report we have launched public advocacy and media campaigns based on these demands - working alongside industrial trade unions, national and grassroots climate groups, and oil and gas workers. We coordinate a first-of-its-kind coalition of industrial unions and climate groups working together on national worker transition demands.
As living conditions continue to decline and the climate crisis deepens, we are looking for a motivated and creative campaigner, who is able to lead the next stage of the project, and who has a strong understanding of anti-oppression and energy justice.
About the role
The Worker Transition Campaigns Manager will work closely with our Worker Organiser and Public and Community Ownership Campaigner, supported by our Organising and Advocacy Lead, Research Lead and Communications Lead.
You will be responsible for strategising, project managing and delivering the project. Activities will look like:
- Coordinating an existing coalition of climate groups and trade unions, including holding relationships with a wide range of key stakeholders across movements;
- Developing and delivering political advocacy and public campaigns strategies to win Our Power demands - including public ownership of energy - at a UK and Scottish Government level;
- Supporting the work of Platform’s Worker Organiser(s) to build links with energy workers and involve them in media, political meetings and/or campaigning activities.
This post would sit within Platform’s internal collective management structure and would therefore be expected to support the collective management of the organisation in addition to finance and fundraising-related responsibilities. This includes line managing 1-2 staff members after the 6 month probation period and attending collective management meetings.

Guidelines Manager
Contract: Fixed-term contract, 6 months
Salary: Up to £45,000 (depending on experience)
Place of Work: BSH Headquarters, 100 White Lion Street, London, N1 9PF (hybrid working, 2 days per week in the office)

The British Society for Haematology (BSH) is the largest UK multidisciplinary Haematology Society with over 3,000 members. Our activities include running education events and courses (including our flagship Annual Scientific Meeting held in April), producing guidelines, awarding grants, and raising the profile of haematology.
The role of the BSH Guidelines is to provide haematologists with up-to-date advice on the diagnosis and treatment of haematological disease and also on laboratory haematology practice, primarily by the production of evidence-based guidelines.
The co-ordination and commissioning of the required guidelines is carried out by 4 task forces, each responsible for a specialist area; blood transfusion, haemostasis & thrombosis, haemato-oncology and general haematology. It is also the responsibility of each task force group to ensure that guidelines are reviewed regularly and updated as appropriate on the BSH website. BSH Guidelines is overseen by an Executive Committee which consists of a Chair and Vice-Chair of BSH Guidelines and the Chairs of each of the four Task Forces.
Each Task Force will have between 10 - 15 guidelines in production or review at any one time, with an average of 2 - 3 being published each year (approximately 10 - 12 in total). The guidelines are written by nominated writing groups with members of the Task Force taking responsibility to ensure they are written to the correct standards and specification. The finished guidelines are usually published in the British Journal of Haematology and are made freely available on the BSH website. Each Task Force will meet 3 - 4 times a year to discuss the progress of the guidelines and any other pertinent business.

This is a six-month, full-time role to cover an extended period of staff absence. We are looking for someone to cover the role but we’re looking for someone who can do more than just maintain the status quo. We want a dynamic individual who will actively engage with the role, bring fresh ideas, and look for ways to develop and improve the work.
