Meet Charlotte, from the Freedom from Torture Fundraising team

2 minute read

Charlotte is a Donor Development Fundraiser who has been at Freedom from Torture for nearly four years, helping generate the income they need to be able to deliver the crucial services that the survivors of torture can benefit from.

Why did you choose to work for Freedom from Torture?

“It is an incredible cause, helping support people who have been tortured.  We are the only organisation in the UK who specialises in helping survivors of torture.  I feel very close to the work we do, even though my role does not directly support the clients, because I am based in the same building the clients come to I get to see the true need. It’s a real inspiration.”

Can you tell us what you do in your role?

“Although my role is in donor development, because we have such a small team I am also involved in acquisition of donors and supporter care as well as working in conjunction with the wider team to ensure we take a joined up approach to provide a good donor experience for our supporters.”

What do you find most rewarding about your work?

“Knowing that what I do is directly benefitting our clients is really important to me. You get to meet many clients who come to the centre and they are some of the bravest people in the world, they have often put their own safety at risk in order to stand up for people’s rights.”

What is Freedom from Torture like as an employer?

“We get a generous holiday package, and the organisation promotes flexible working, offering a number of different options, which I have found has helped me get a good work-life balance.  I also like that my team is relatively small, which means I get insight into all of the fundraising activities we do.  This has been a really good way for me to develop and get a wide range of experience in my field.  My team are really supportive of each other, which makes it a caring and friendly environment to work in.”
