The CharityJob Salary Report 2024: How Does Your Salary Measure Up?

Are you thinking of finding a new role in the charity sector, and curious about what salary you may be able to get? Or wondering how your charity salary compares to others in similar roles?

We’ve published the CharityJob Salary Report 2024 which can help answer some of these questions.

The report analyses average salaries by job type, experience level and charity size from more than 48,000 jobs posted on our site in 2023. It provides insight into trends in the charity recruitment market as a whole, how ways of working are changing, and whether candidates received pay increases or other benefits in their jobs.

 

Key insights from the CharityJob Salary Report 2024

 

The average charity salary has gone up

In 2023, the average salary for a charity role posted on CharityJob was £36,100―a 4% increase from 2022.

London salaries were 16% higher than salaries outside London

The average salary for a charity role in London was £38,300 compared to £33,100 outside London.

Finance roles pay the most

Roles in finance had the highest average salary (£48,800), despite being the only job category in the report to have a salary decrease from 2022 (of -1%). HR roles paid the second highest average salary (£43,500).

At the other end of the spectrum, admin roles had the lowest average salary (£26,400). Second lowest were jobs in support work with an average salary of £28,300.

Working arrangements have shifted

44% of roles were on-site, 44% had hybrid working arrangements and 12% were remote.

The proportion of hybrid jobs increased from 35% in 2022 to 44% in 2023.

If you work for a charity or you’re considering it, chances are you’re motivated by more than money. Making a difference, positive organisation cultures and other factors can be huge motivators. But this doesn’t devalue the importance of pay. While salaries at charities are likely to be lower than salaries in the private sector, they should still be fair.
